Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

I never hated this design as much as everyone else...and it's only warming up to me from there. I'm down on the 12th. For that price its nothing.

I don't care that it looks so awkward, this makes the entry to play Pokemon so much cheaper, so I'll take it.

Pokemon here I come <3

Yep that's me. I really wish it was only 99$.

How much is Pokemon? Because a 2Ds and Pokemon should still be like 185 dollars with tax. (if there's a bundle I'll take it)

I'm reading everywhere 'it's not for you! It's not foldable so kids can't break the hinge!', but has kids breaking the hinge on their DSs actually been a major problem? Genuine question, I don't feel like it has but I've no idea really. Is it really that easy to break? I don't know, just feels like such an enormous compromise considering you lose the ability to out in your pocket. Just tell them to be careful with it!

The hinges on the DS LIte would break from just normal use.

Came around in a big way for the device over the day yesterday. I still think its lame to have a mono speaker, but this device is pretty cool. The button placement looks to shift the centre of gravity to a much better position than the standard 3DS and, as far as the hinge is concerned, honestly a lot of people put their 3DS in a bag anyways.

I also heard a great argument last night that this gets over the hurdle some people have with the 3D nature of the original device. Sure they could turn it off, but does everyone actually know that? Parents don't have to worry about being over protective, kids too young for 3D wont be flicking the switch upwards and people who never wanted 3D in the first place get a cheaper device.

I love the design. There I said it. I love it. It's got a real retro look to me, and I think it would be far more comfortable to hold/use than the current 3DS. I have the 3DS and 3DSXL already, but I'll preorder one of these in red with the carry bag for the 12th, and if my kids weren't in their 20s I'd be buying three more for them as well... And I agree with everyone saying these things will sell crazy numbers over the holidays; with the Pokemon tie-in (colours, release date) they're going to fly off the shelves for Christmas...

I think the design is fine, the only issue I have with it that you can't fit that into any pocket, maybe I could get it into one of my huge pockets in my cargo trousers but that's it.

Otherwise I think this is actually cool, but if anyone asked me I would just tell them to get an XL.

The knee jerk hyperbole and "wut?...wutt?" continuing even into today is soo entertaining. Shame it's slowing down a bit and people are coming around some. :-(

I'll probably never have one, as I like the 3D, and I don't have children young enough to avoid a 3DS. But I can see giving it as a gift, absolutely.

Honestly I now want one for the Dpad. Enough of a grip there to not suck.

Rgggg. Ninty give me accounts or some way to easily swap back and forth and I'll get one.

I thought this initially too, but with the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets, can Nintendo really see that same success this time around? A spike will occur, no doubt, but can it reach the same level?

Guess we will find out. Frankly, on the face of it, this may be the smartest move Nintendo has made recently.

I hope they release one with a Game & Watch theme down the line, much like the Famicom GBA Micro.
Famicom controllers were patterned after the only design cues that were ever shared among multiple units in the Game & Watch line, so that's essentially the same thing.

I also find it amazing how out of the blue this announcement was. There wasn't even a small hint of a new model coming out this year. Usually we always get rumor or some kind of stuff before.

Not when it comes to Nintendo hardware.....unless it is purposefully leaked.

I still can't believe there are people here who can't understand why this system makes sense for Nintendo and why, for all intents and purposes, this will most probably sell by the truckloads.

Hell, I am almost convinced I'll buy three of these just to give to my nephews. People look at the device and say "That's so stupid; that looks cheap!" without pausing for a moment and realizing you can play all the awesome DS and 3DS games with it at such a low entry price.

But hey, knee-jerk reaction GAF, especially if it's regarding Nintendo. Remind me again why this place is so "esteemed" by the industry?

You would be correct. I'm thinking other colors like green with a silver or white face. I miss my Octopus unit btw :-(

Nintendo and their stupid naming strikes again!!

My 8 year old son does not want a 2DS because the 3DS is "better". I asked "how much better?" and he said "50%"

Damn you Nintendo! Simple math and you lose to 8 year olds!

You should have just named it 3DS Y or something.

:p but "the 2DS is for 6 years or lower"... maybe those dont know?? jaja

Was needing a second system for Pokemon X/Y trading anyway, might possible be interested in this.

That and I could use this on the bus without worrying about the screen scratching issue.

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
Where has this been said? Nintendo introduced it as a new addition to the line, not a replacement.

they have? that would be weird, when it's not releasing in japan, and with '3ds' on all the packaging.

i read it somewhere in the thread, but it must have not actually been from nintendo saying that, just conjecture considering that the hardware was basically the same as the original 3ds and not the XL. i'm not sure what page i was looking at.

Would neogaf... buy this?

Yes. Mostly because I love my PSP go... but not everyone is down with the sliding design.

FWIW, I'd prefer that to the Wii U gamepad, too. In fact, I'd prefer the 3DS was a Wii U controller AND a handheld, and you could use the two together or separate, however you want.

Sony understands me...

lol why would anyone want to use a 3DS as a controller? And why would anyone use a Vita instead of a DS4 for the PS4 outside of remote-play? The actual controller are far more superior.

I feel weirdly prophetic right now. Way back in June 2011:

As far as the 3DS goes, Nintendo needs to do the following:

...

Nintendo 2DS A lot of people seem to be hesitant about 3D, being worried about eye strain and getting headaches. Also, the warning about eye damage to young children will make many parents avoid getting one for their kids. If you are not going to use the 3D then buying a 250$ handheld just doesn't make sense.

I think releasing a cheaper edition without the 3D screen, a "Nintendo 2DS" if you will, might be good idea. Sure, there is a danger of confusing the consumers, but with the right marketing this might be avoided.

I still think releasing the 2DS is a good idea (though I may have some reservations about the design itself). This is just anecdotal, but even lately I've heard some people say they don't feel like buying a 3DS because they "don't like 3D", or they can't see 3D. Sure, the 3D is only one feature of the system, but since it's even in the name of the system itself, to some it may sound like 3D is "what the 3DS is all about".

And if 3D doesn't appeal to them, paying 160$ for a system like that may sound like a waste of money.

And then there's parents, who (understandably) really don't like the sound of 3D damaging their kids eyes. Even if the feature can be permanently turned off, the very existence of such a feature may give the 3DS a negative image for them. People can become pretty irrational when it comes to things potentially hurting their kids.

3D doesn't even hurt children's eyes. This is a misconception really. children after the age of 3-4 can use 3D just fine. It would be hypocritical to say that 3D is bad for children at the same time go to a 3D movie or 3D show at Disney world or something.
