IGN's hyperbole and circle-jerking of GTA5 is pretty embarassing

"It was pure Hollywood. A random, breathtaking moment of awesome directly stemming from a post the OP made. A purely emergent, back-and-forth dance more exciting than every pre-constructed and predictable GTA thread I've ever half-heartedly F5'ed my way through.

Make no mistake; NeoGAF is made of moments just like this.

And it feels incredible."

Yup. It's disgusting, and why I do not visit IGN.

Gaf needs new obscure words no one uses in the real world.

GAFlish.
Lol the people you talk to don't know what hyperbole means.

It's better to just go to GTA.net and read their summaries to get any new info if you want it instead of attempting to decipher this amateur prose.
Well, I usually do go there or to the R* Newswire for GTA stuff, but since this was an "exclusive", I decided to go against my stance of never visiting IGN.

I regret that now, though. Should have just read up on anything new over at gtav.net.

Well all I can say is you're going to have egg on your face when it's even better than these previews suggest.
Not likely considering this masturbatory way they are describing the game as if they are having multiple orgasms every second of playing the game.

I'm sure lessons have been learned from GTAIV and it'll be a fun game. But OMG CRACKS IN THE ROAD THIS IS THE EPITOME OF GAMING it will quite likely be not.

Is this a joke or an indictment (you may use that word) of whatever education system you enjoyed?

99/100 Metacritic score incoming, and it shouldn't surprise anyone.
The only way to make people think it's better than IV.

If anything, at least TLOU is worthy of that score.
Hell yeah, The Last of Us is the only game of this generation I would consider worthy of a perfect score.

Or maybe like a 9.9/10 because of the the shitty frame rate and resolution, but I feel like it's kind of unfair to lower the score just because the game is a console exclusive.

GAF tends to get stupid with accusing everyone of paying for reviews and every review of being bought.

But if any company buys reviews, it's Rockstar, and if any website is being bought, it's IGN.

Take 2 are known to pressure news outlets to their bidding, they don't even use money with smaller ones. They simply don't allow you to go to the review event or send you review or the extent NDA to release date. They do enforce minimum grades for GTA games. So you know IGN's track record and still trust them on their word? That's on you. Not sure why you feel the need to mention other games. We are talking about GTAV in this case. I'm hyped for GTAV as well, but this is a fluff piece.

OK, well, I loved GTA IV, one of my top games of this generation. Everything I've seen is absolutely jaw-dropping and stunning in relation to V. It's like they went and looked at every single possible issue that people had with GTA IV and corrected it, making one of the most feature rich, elaborate, and content-filled games to date. Not your thing? I understand. But I can completely understand how somebody could gush over this game. If I got the chance to play it I would probably do the same.

It looks like something a GTA fan would write. Plus, nobody but the big guys even receives R* stuff, so what exactly are they holding back from the 60 or so 'little' sites that rated IV great?

Of course it's a 'fluff' piece. They can't show us gameplay, they can only explain what they've seen and they decided to do it in a story-driven manner.

I think the circle-jerk over IGN 'fluff' pieces is more hilarious.

It's the perfect storm. IGN and GTA, promised at least 3 pages of people going:

"OMG, my eyes!"
"GTA sucks"

I don't get it, maybe they like the game? By using descriptive text to describe visual scenes through an article we now saw they're on the payroll?

Though this stems from PR buzz words, we have been using "value proposition" a lot. I'm guilty too. Stupid PR articles ruining my vocabulary!

GTA IV is still one of the best games of the generation, like maybe in the lower part of the top 10.

I don't think I'll ever understand why there are many on GAF that think GTA IV was a "bad" game. Ya, it was worse than every GTA game on the PS2, but it was still "good".
In the years since it came out I've calmed down about it, but I would say it was average at best and outclassed by many other open world games this generation. It wouldn't even make my top 100. It certainly wasn't worth the flowery prose it received in previews and reviews.

To be fair I understand that sometimes a writer wants to write something more... passionate to convey their excitement, if someone doing video game reviews no longer gets hyped, he should quit his job. It's not easy to try and write differently and I've noticed that on GAF you can barely use an adjective or a cliché expression without being attacked. With that said, I stand by my last post, the media and community's enourmous love affair with AAA games is something that I profoundly dislike and is a gigantic part of the problems facing the industry. Everyone's just feeding the machine.

Rockstar has been doing a pretty good job hyping up GTA V themselves. I was not a big fan of GTA IV (other than the setting and the multiplayer), and I've been long sold on GTA V.

IGN's coverage isn't embarrassing at all. It might be a bit much, but it isn't embarrassing.

I did notice Gaffer posting the same OTT one-liners for GTA5 they did in the run up to GTA4 in response to the previews. You'd think they'd learned to reign in expectations.

GTA 4 was probably the biggest disappointment for me this gen and hindsight being 20/20 I find all the reviews praising the game to the stars to be laughable.

Lesson learned so to see it happening again I agree with the OP.

Who are the people that don't know hyperbole at the very least? Did they not go to school? That's like, grade 8 stuff.

Why can't games just be this good?

Well in my own opinion, no game is that good. The preview makes it sound absolutely perfect. Flawless. Will it be that? Not a fucking chance. Reviews and previews are supposed to be critical. Will IGN's be? I seriously doubt it.

And for reference, the only game I could ever call perfect/flawless is the original Game Boy Tetris. Nothing else is perfect. Everything else has flaws that can be talked about. No exception whatsoever.

This is IGN we're talking about--R* made a deal with them, and they are executing on that deal. I don't think any more needs to be said. At least, it won't change what IGN is doing.

Pretty embarrassing, huh? You don't seem to be embarrassed about this topic Turkish Emperor:

Meh, tracking the previews of that game versus the GTA series shows a pretty big difference. I remember problems being explicitly pointed out in previews of Last of Us, I never got the impression that the game was going to redefine gameplay or even history as we know it. It got previewed as a game, that appeared to be good at the stage it was being previewed at, nothing more and nothing less. So I think that's a little unfair.

Why does something's worth en masse even matter?

I think Deadly Premonition is one of the best games this generation, a narrative masterpiece. But I'm not going to feel betrayed or blind sided when the critical reception is lukewarm at best.

Oh, has the GTAV hate started already? I thought it would at least come as the reviews come out.

I don't see anyone hating on GTAV, just the fact that IGN can't write a preview without it sounding like PR nonsense. No one wants GTAV to be anything less than amazing, but GTA4 previews were full of this hyperbolic garbage and a lot of people were burned.

Well, I did enjoy Saint's Row 3 and Red Dead Redemption more than GTA IV...

Although Red Dead is straight up my #2 pick for GOTG after TLoU, so that's a hard bargain.

They don't allow them to release the review before the release of the actual game. I know they did this to a retail magazine. It's pretty bad for sales if you don't have a GTA review when everyone else does.

Serious question.

Don't we here on NeoGAF do the same exact thing?

GAF on release month: ITS AMAZING!
GAF one month after relase: ITS TERRIBLE!

Though I would rather take a gaffers word on a review than the reviews of gaming websites while their chin is still drying.

The what I am most kinda shocked by is that everyone on GAF is eating it up because its about GTA5 instead of calling them on this BS.
I find odd how you critizise the hyperbole in IGNs article, yet speak of "everyone on GAF eating it up".
Just my $0.02

This is how IGN has operated for a long time. Is what it is. Only thing that gets on my nerves at this point is that people rush to hate on a place like Polygon, which is willing to make unpopular statements and write unpopular reviews outside of the general consensus, however right or wrong they may be, and people just kind of accept(or even embrace) IGN because at least their favorite AAA game will always get a good score.

EDIT: I think GTA V looks really good.

Even if some of us do, we aren't getting paid for it.

That, to me, is a pretty significant difference. I tend to act very differently in a professional capacity from a private one.
