Custom Cover Art - Minimalist, clean, or alternative box arts for your favorite games

I have the same problem with the script, will post an How-To about manually doing the 3D-mockup tomorrow, working on my own Infamous 2 cover right now.
_________

@Zajora: I didn't get the intention of the "Small" Folders on first glance, thought these were just small versions of the printables. I bet it is/was a lot of work, but the consitent 3D-Images in the thumbnail view are actually pretty great to look through the covers!

Noticed there are sometimes pretty similar versions of a cover. For example Metal Gear Solid 4. 3 versions are absolutly similar (Same author I guess), just the font is different/not visible. I'd suggest that in these cases you just pick one to save yourself some time and keep the Dropbox's clarity. Same with MGS Peace Walker, Need for speed etc.

Will maybe make another Dropbox Account later to increase your's size, could you repost the refer link?

It's so strange Rengoku's 3D template isn't working for you guys. Does it run at all? If so, what error does it give?

Yeah, the previews don't work so well on the dropbox since the thumbnails are already so small, but on a real gallery I think it'd be much better to be able to see the covers in a representation of what they'd look like printed.

You're right, there are some near-duplicates, but there are actually quite a few more versions that I didn't include. The only issue is that I always feel terribly guilty when not including some variants of covers in the Dropbox, since I'm not sure I'm really the one to decide whether or not some people would like a cover. As a general rule I include all variants that use different art, and if two covers use the same art, I will include both if one is significantly more minimalist than the other, since some people seem to appreciate covers with no logos, while others want covers that will fit in among their library. If they're too similar I'll usually just choose the one that I think looks better, which is admittedly a biased way to do it but I can't think of anything better.

You must be talking about Mithos' MGS4 covers, right? These two: 1 2. Personally, I think the one with horizontally aligned text on the front looks better, but I think there are probably people out there who want vertically aligned text, so I included it.

While I was tagging the covers with their authors, I was surprised how many near-identical covers there were by different authors. Often they used the same art and the same logos with near identical placement. If you do find two covers that you think are too similar, just let me know which ones. It's quite possible I may have missed some duplicates. :p

Oh, awesome. If you (or anyone else) are willing to sign up for Dropbox, this link will add 500MB of space to the Dropbox. After I converted all covers to JPG I actually saved quite a bit of space, but that will likely fill up all too quickly once I've done 3D previews for all covers, and of course as people continue to submit new covers to the thread.

Been a LOOOOOONG time since I posted a cover, here's one I just did recently...

I forgot to say this in my last reply, but would you mind sharing a printable version? I'd love to start a Gameboy folder in the Dropbox. :p

I finally got my printer to work when attempting to print game covers, so I thought I'd give it a go and attempt to make my own cover. This was my first time ever using Photoshop, so I decided to try something easy; all I did was go on Google images, found a Skyrim wallpaper, and put it on the template.

The one thing I didn't know how to do was copy the stylized Skyrim logo onto the spine of the case, so if anyone can tell me how to do that/link me to a tutorial, I'd appreciate it.

That looks great, but the only issue with just using a wallpaper is that the art is not going to be high resolution/large enough to use for a printable cover. The more you have to scale an asset to get it to fit the template, the worse it'll look when you print it. Some things scale better than others, but an image like that Skyrim wallpaper (with lots of tiny little details) will most likely not scale well at all, unfortunately. When looking for art to use in a cover, I generally search for images above 6 MP. The larger the better, but if you go too much higher you most likely won't get anything related to the game you're looking for. To set image size constraints in Google Images, click "Search Tools" and in the dropdown under "Size" select "Larger Than..." and choose the size you're looking for.

There are many different ways of making selections in Photoshop, but for a complicated selection like that the pen tool might be your best bet. A quick Google search yields this tutorial. Alternatively, you could just search Google images for one someone else already did and save yourself some work.

Could anyone do one for Amnesia a Machine for Pigs? The game isn't seeing a retail release so would be great to have a cover to print for a copy.

Sure, how're these?

All right, thanks for the suggestions. As simple as it was, making the cover was pretty fun, and I'd like to make some more. With any luck, they may eventually be up-to-par with some of the amazing work in this thread.

Here you go!!

The reason I haven't done any new covers as of late is because I simply ran out of ideas. Most of you have the covers for more modern games covered, so I figured I had an angle I could cover with old classic games. Problem is, I don't have much more ideas of what I can do on them either.

If you guys have any sort of suggestions please run them by me.

I would love to get the printer spreads for some of these. Although some need the name and logo on the side. But these still look sick as hell!

I think some of Rengoku's actions/scripts require the layer you paste in to be called "Layer 1", so that might be the issue. My French (?) isn't all that good, but I'm guessing that's the problem.

Thank you very much.
the problem came from my french version of photoshop.
I just tested in English and does it work perfectly!
thank you again

So i upload new cover with 3D Cover :)

Are there any more covers to XIV? (PS3)

Also, got around and finally put on some of the covers. Need to clean up the GC case though.

Well, I made these covers:

Here are some variations:

I made a PS4/PS4 version for one of them. I can make any of the others into a PS3 if you'd like:

Alrighty. I think that was my favourite of the minimal ones, too.

Also: I noticed that for some reason the font has a disproportionately small "X" which was noticeable on the back, so I fixed the PC version as well. If you've already saved a copy you might want to replace it.

Re PS4: Haha, I'm sure someone else has beaten me to it. In fact, we've already had a PS4 cover made in this thread! Well, at least now it'll have company.

Oh wow, that is beautiful. If you can make that into a PS3 case, I'll be extremely grateful

That was one I sort of broke my own rules with. I really liked the artwork despite its very widescreen aspect ratio, so I had to upscale it quite a bit. Personally, I think it still looks okay, but you might want to check the fullview before printing to make sure you're satisfied with the quality. Since the PS3 inserts have a wider ratio than PC ones, the art actually does look better than on the PC version, but still.

Does anyone have a decent method for scanning printed stuff, or a recommendation for software that handles it well?

I've found some pictures that I'd like to use for some possible boxarts, but they're in magazines and books... scanning these means mucho moiré patterns, which I find to be a pain in the arse to process and look good.

I think most people here use artwork that's already available online. Are you sure nobody has already scanned what you're looking for with a fancy-expensive scanner?

I've not had a proper look yet, lol.

This is just me randomly thinking ahead for no good reason.

I created a Dropbox so you wouldn't have to look through all 50 pages, but I guess it's a bit late for that.

Soul Calibur 4 by RedSwirl
Batman Arkham Asylum by Girsej

PS3
Ninja Gaiden Sigma by Rengoku
Ninja Gaiden Sigma by corrosivefrost
Dante's Inferno by U2NUMB
Ratchet and Clank - A Crack in Time by Rengoku
Ratchet and Clank - Tools of Destruction by Musiol
Ratchet and Clank - Tools of Destruction by Musiol
Ratchet and Clank - Tools of Destruction by DarkGiygas

If you'd like, I could try my hand at making some covers for you. It might take awhile, however; I'm going to be busy in the next few days.

Man I really like how those Ace Attorney boxes turned out. I love them on my shelf. It kinda got me thinking about maybe getting this myself. I don't really care for having customized boxes for my regular games but I would love to make boxes for some of my digital only games. Things i'm thinking about off the top of my head...

Bad box art cover's for Mega Man 9 and 10
Scott Pilgrim
Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
House of the Dead Overkill
Flower
Street Fighter 2 HD Remix
Tell tale games stuff like Back to the Future ect.
Bionic Commando
Tokyo Jungle

Also even though there are retail boxes, playstation plus titles would be killer. Most have variations already posted but I like official boxes for retail releases need a Spec Ops the Line box art.

Just picked up Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena today because I heard the new movie is coming out and decided to make this cover tonight. It's a rush job, and I'm slightly drunk but whatever, if I have nothing to do over the next couple of days I'll try to edit it correctly.

Did one for Flower actually some time ago but never posted it. My own looks slightly different but it's kind of a personal special edition.

Would love to see more people doing PSN/Arcade Game Covers. Problem is that often there is little high-res stuff or fitting material to work with. Also I prefer covers that are one consistent image from front- to the (minimalisitic) rear-side ..... so I often waste a lot of time faking parts of an image, mostly the back.
Apart from the "Download games are not so important"-Argument (which is nonsense) I guess this lack of material keeps most people of doing these :/
Wish more indie-developers would publish good looking artworks/wallpapers, it's pretty anoying that there is absolutly no material for titles like Shatter etc.

Decided to make a few this morning

Bioshock 2:

Infinite Undiscovery:

(This unfortunately is pretty terribly upscaled. If you can find any higher res art for the game I'd be happy to make a different version)

Far Cry 2:

Looks like you might have copied the wrong link there. I don't see anything!

Personally, I'm of the opinion that ultimately you won't notice THAT much of difference in the quality when it's behind a piece of shiny plastic (So it's probably not worth buying a new printer for). If possible, however, you'd want to print the covers on glossy photo paper with an inkjet printer. The best results would probably be found at a store that specializes in printing.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (360)

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (360)

Those look great! I think I agree with Hurzelein about the Wolverine one, though.

anyone made a cover for GTA V? :)

Yup, we've had a few, actually. One by kitsunisan, another by przmekszulim, and one by Ricky_R.

Do yall think this would print fine, this is the most upscaling I've done for an image, and the last one I need to finalize for my Halo Collection (hoping to print them out this week!)

obviously the art style is intentionally sketchy so its not pristine to begin with

All I see is the broken imgur link. :(

You're right I removed the link because something went wrong when exporting to .png and depixelated near the Xbox banner. I'll rehost soon.

EDIT: Slightly changed it but I reuploaded.

Oh, I getcha. Looks good.

Couple edits for my Wolverine cover

Those both look great. If I had the game I think I'd print the first one (well, the first edit)

I'm having a problem with the 3D script in CS6. The box art I do doesn't fit the whole box. It's like a small image. :/

Are you sure your cover is the correct size? I believe for all of Rengoku's scripts the images you paste in (or use the batch script on) have to be a precise size. Which console's script are you using?

I think they turned out great and very inexpensive. I went to a local used and trade store and bought the cheapest DS and 3DS games they had (My smoking coach DS for 1.99 and Resident Evil the Mercenaries 3D for 4.99), then went to Staples and printed the pics from my USB for like 1.25 each on glossy paper. So basically a total of about 10 bucks for both cases and RE isn't that bad of a game.

crap, ofcourse when someone is actually gunna help me out it breaks, I reorganized the images and broke it, here ya go

edit: now that I am seeing it on my TV screen and not laptop, it doesnt look terrible full view

I don't see the point of putting that black bar in the middle.

Remove that entirely and just have that image in the background, and have the halo 4 logo sitting on the spine.
