Naughty Dog receives 120 PS4 dev kits

A jump to new hardware would be a great chance to shake things up with Uncharted.

Clearly they wont ditch their biggest franchise but taking it in a different direction wouldn't hurt.

Would be cool if they opened it up. Maybe not go full open world but something simalar in scope to the OG Far Cry or Crysis. Roll some of TLOU's stealth / last none position stuff back into Uncharted would be good as well because the stealth systems in U3 are basically non existent.

I just wrote up some notes on Neil Druckmann's keynote here in Toronto, about the story development for The Last of Us. It's in the community thread because there were tons of spoilers.

One non-spoiler point: during the Q&A, he stated that the Sony execs gave absolutely NO creative notes for The Last of Us. That's how much they trust ND.

Yeah, on a podcast Yoshida said that he actually stopped going and doing his personal quality assurance checks that he usually does quite early on for the TLOU, because he hit a point where he wanted to properly experience it as a gamer and didn't want to spoil it for himself. Speaks volumes of the trust right there.

Everyone is so harsh on Uncharted 3 due to expectations after 2, but it's still a damn fine experience with a lot of very good content within. It's very well made and doesn't deserve half the shit it receives.

It also almost certainly didn't deserve the 10/10s it got either. :p I agree it's a good game, although disappointing with a number of bad decisions and rushed to launch.

UC3 was a letdown IMO

huh? character development was much better in uc3. the drake and sully of uc2 were the same characters from uc1, the audience learned nothing more about them in uc2.

uc2 last 1/3 was basically non-stop fighting, and final boss was just horrid. uc2 puzzles were kindergarten tier. the journal was not even a hint book, but an instruction manual.

a lot of people are criticizing the cruise ship part being "just there to showcase a set piece" as if the stories in all the other games were not modified to fit the setpieces in. set pieces are done first, the stories later same in movies. if anyone can swallow a cool-looking action sequence in a movie that did nothing to the story, EmptySpace can not understand why the cruise ship was such a negative. it served its purpose and it was awesome.

also, a lot of people even went as far as to ask the creative director to clarify how the
magician man survived or escaped.
seriously, these are the same people who didn't take issue with drake
getting faked shot in the beginning but suddenly a man wearing a bullet-proof vest was somehow "stupid" or "stretching it" or "impossible". that's the equivalent of batman disappearing every single conversation yet no one thinks of it as "magic". there is no magic in the world of uncharted, it should have been clear the 3rd time around. every single fantasy element was met with a real-world explanation in-game.

there's more, but it gets kinda mean.

Maybe I should replay UC2 but I finished the third this weekend and thought everything starting from the ship wreck yard was grandiose and some of my favorite uncharted moments.

Yeah, they really want a first party studio to remain first party, lol.
Sony owns Naughty Dog.
Naughty Dog is Sony, ever since the PS2.
Sony owns Naughty Dog, literally.
They own ND...
The bought ND over a decade ago.
well......
I know right, just like how Nintendo really wants Retro to remain exclusive or how the same applies for 343i on MS' end. :x
They cant leave
You do realize now how stupid that is, right?
As if they could say/do otherwise, they're owned by Sony afterall.
Ignoring that Sony own them...
Well they own them, so...
No, they bought Naughty Dog shortly before the release of the original Jak and Daxter (2001).
Nope...Naughty Dog is a part of Sony, just like Sucker Punch, SCE Santa Monica, SCE Japan Studio, SCEA, SCEJ/A, SCEE...you get the picture.

They can't do anything without Sony's permission.
Naughty Dog is fully owned by Sony
Naughty Dog IS Sony.
...

They own Naughty Dog.
well they are first party.

Sony owns Naughty Dog Cyanide.

Does this mean we get a decent Jak and Dexter game and a return to Crash Bandicoot or is it all out gritty shoot bang movie games from here on in?

Would love a new platformer from them entirely. Or a "fun" game at least. Something along the lines of Knack but better.

I'd more readily grant it a 10 than many other 10/10 games that I've played. Nothing any more disappointing about it than the previous 2 games.

I always thought it was franchise fatigue. I don't see how it was that much different from 1 or 2. It was just the same stuff again and that's why I don't think an Uncharted 4 would be received well. I really hope they move on.

Yup that's how I see it as well. Viewed as a stand alone experience it's of stellar quality with some great gameplay moments. Think fatigue is a key issue. It's the only UC that I've only played through once, despite it further refining a great deal of the mechanics i enjoy in the series.

They should have pushed a new Crash Bandicoot instead of Knack for launch. Would have been huge.

they no longer have any rights to that series, and one of the reasons they walked away form it, iirc, was because it was designed for the 32 bit era. Jak was their attempt at a next gen, at that time, plat former.

Would be interesting to see them make a ps4 platformer though.

They can be for one of two reasons:
1) More updated dev-kits with complete parity with retail kits (i.e. final form etc.)
OR 2) more kits so that the majority of the team member have one (plus some spares..)

Still, either way, this is a good sign :D I really cannot wait to see what ND do with this hardware and what there first game will be. Still a huge question mark if they will continue with an existing IP or a new entry. Either way, I'll be happy!

Thank you for the link and reply. Appreciated

No, but they struggled a lot with cramming TLOU into PS3 memory pool. I'm sure they will be very happy with PS4. :D
Agreed. The big fast pool available on PS4 should help devs realise ambitious projects that they may not have been able to bring to the current generation. Great times ahead for gamers.

I'm hoping that the financial success of TLOU has given them/Sony the confidence that a new IP from Naughty Dog for PS4 would be just as lucrative as doing an Uncharted 4.

As much as I enjoyed the series, I feel like it has run its course, and I'd much rather see their talents used on something entirely new. A PS4 Uncharted would look fantastic, but do we really need more of that? Any game they make for PS4 will look fantastic.

Yes, but early on Sony needs system sellers. It will be hard decision to pick how much to ignore franchises from previous generations. God of War will most likely go on ice for a few years, but new adventure of Drake will be much better welcomed.

They shoud do one more UC ON PS4 where Drake is killed off...it would be a game people would play to end their UC days..and then (the brilliant part), Drake become an ANTAGONIST ZOMBIE in TLOU 2..TLOU TOO..eh?? eh.

Traditionally, they haven't been too adverse to making new IP each gen, from ND and others, that go on to move systems. Lets the teams also have the advantage of creating ip that make the most of the system, instead of trying to up the design of a previous game to fit the new hardware.

UC 3 ended in such a way that them walking away from it is very possible. I'd almost rather them concentrate on TLOU universe, or try something completely new.

Uncharted 3 is great. Just not quite as great as Uncharted 2.

Would love a sequelprequel starring Young Sully, chomping on cigars, punching bad guys and picking up strange STDs from exotic women in South America and South West Asia.

Don't see how it can be franchise fatigue when UC3 went on to sell even more \ faster than UC2 if i remember right .
I would say what happen to GOW and GeOW is franchise fatigue .
Still the expectations for UC3 were just to big after UC2 so while UC3 was not a bad game it did not live up to 2 or surpass it .
I am hoping for 1 more UC and i feel PS4 can bring new life into the series .

We're not talking about sales. More about general reception. I can't speak for the world at large but the feeling on GAF was pretty neutral. Not bad. Just like... ok good game. I've completely forgotten what happened to be pretty honest. I remember the boat section because it was so horrible but other than that it's a blur.

I think ANY Naughty Dog game would be a system seller.

I'm probably the only one who thinks this, but I think Sony should have released The Last of Us on both PS3 and PS4 on Nov 12, sort of like Nintendo did with Twilight Princess.

It could have been that killer app that the PS4 needed at launch, and PS3 already had tons on exclusives on the docket this year (GoW, Sly, Puppeteer, Rain, Beyond, Dragon's Crown etc.)

Uncharted 4, The last of us 2 or a new IP, they can do whatever they want, I'll be there day 1...

My safest bet would probably be U4 though, which is totally fine by me.

Anyway I think their first ps4 game will make me get a ps4 (just like The first uncharted made me buy a PS3...)

I played both back to back when I first played them last year. I was really disapointed by UC3.
