My first experiences with gaming were with a NES and GameBoy. That really says it all about how influential the vision of this man and his company was to me and my interests in gaming, as well as countless others just like me. In a way, I am forever in his debt.

People talk of legends in the games industry, greatly contributing to it in one form or another, but this man may have been one of the most important.

Rest in peace, big man, and thank you...

His immense fortune will now pass to his daughter Yoko and his husband - Minoru Arakawa. I really wonder what will happen to Nintendo now.

To clear a question, does that mean Iwata is in control of Nintendo, or a relative of the Yamauchi bloodline is in charge?

He has a Son (his youngest) and 2 daughters, Yoko being the oldest and most well known because she is married to Arakawa, the NOA president for 22 years before retiring.

They (Arakawa and Yamauchi) seemed to have a falling out over Nintendo's direction back at the turn of the century, which seems to be the cause of Arakawa's early retirement, but who knows. All 3 siblings will probably end up with shares since Nintendo was started by the Yamauchi family over a 100 years ago.

You changed a lot of lives. I am forever in your debt.

May you rise into Heaven and rest with the kings. You've earned it.

RIP. He was one of the most important, if not the most important, figures in videogame business. A legend for the medium.

Definitely the most important gaming figure who has yet died, by a LONG shot. This death'll probably be eclipsed by Miyamoto's, but not by many others.

Rest in peace, guy. You were pretty rad.

Totally

So it begins.

Strange to think that at one point, being surprised at the loss of a person related to the games industry would have been classed as not being on the same par as an actor, musician etc.

I don't even want to think about it. Miyamoto will be immortal for as long as Nintendo exists.

This is the man who hired Shigeru Miyamoto..who gave him a shot at making arcade games.

RIP, Yamauchi-san, you left your fortune in the hands of fate and fate was kind..

RIP

His bussiness partners might have feared and hated his iron fist rule but it's a million time better than those spineless worms these days who call themselves CEO.

are people worrying about Nintendo because of this? Yamauchi had been in retirement for many years. It's very unlikely his daughter is going to sell all her shares or something.

Anyway, bit of a legend. A proper businessman!

Sad news, but he could definitely say he left his mark on the lives of many people, and can be proud of that. May you rest in peace, Mr Yamauchi.

It's more than fate, the man had tenacity and a fighting spirit.
So many of his business endeavors with Nintendo were failures, before turning to gaming, but he took away a great deal of experience from those years.
That's part of what made him so admirable in my opinion.

Man, such sad news :(

Without him, I probably wouldn't be the person I am today. When I think of my fondest childhood memories, I think of playing Nintendo games with my dad and the fun times we had.

Thank you for all you've done and rest in peace, Yamauchi-san.

This is video game equivalent of an American Founding Father dying. It's surreal to think that we are reaching that point in time where the original pioneers of video games are starting to pass away due to natural causes/old age. Yamauchi was fairly old already when he started in the video game industry, but it's sad to see the original businessmen/women and designers of an entire medium beginning to leave this world.

We truly are coming to the end of era; but like a Founding Father, what Yamauchi built is so structurally sound that it will survive beyond any of us. There are few higher honors than that. RIP Yamauchi-san.

Very sad news :(

Many of my best childhood memories are due to this man. Whether it was finding an elusive copy of SFII just before Xmas or sneakily opening DKC 2 weeks early.

RIP

The only one that I think has been nearly as big has been maybe Yokoi, and even that is nothing compared to this.

The Old Guard is slowly fading away...

It really is depressing to think about. :(

I could never write anything that would be enough to convey just how grateful I am to this man or how indispensable a role he played in getting Nintendo and the video game industry where it is today.

Rest in piece, visionary, and I pray you continue to watch over Nintendo and gaming from wherever you are now.
