I installed the play disk on a USB hard drive I've had laying around. It gave me an performance warning but it played quite fine. Still, I noticed some pop ups every now and then.
Now, I've looked for some 16GB usb flash drive and I've read that the cheap SanDisk ones, like this one, should give no performance warning. I've noticed that my hard drive has better speed. Could there be some problems because I'm using a hard drive and no flash drive or is this just Microsoft trying to sell me an official flash drive?

The performance warning doesn't really mean anything. I get the same read/write speeds as the internal HDD with an external HDD despite getting the warning.
Just in case anybody was unsure about determining which files are which, as I was:
I installed to Xbox by dropping the Install disc into the tray, which starts the 7.#G installation, and then prompts "Insert the Play disc" and after a brief moment, reports "Installation Complete." Knowing about the Rockstar recommendation, I thought that meant that I had installed both discs. Add to that a psychological effect, because as I started playing and driving at high speed on the highways, I thought I was seeing some grainy interference and pop-ins (such as driving along an airport chainlink fence that appears nonexistent in the distance and then suddenly pops) going on. But to find out if the Play disc was installed, I went back to the dashboard and installed it manually. Filenames before and after confirmed that the Play disc is not installed automatically, and either I was imagining I had pop-in problems from the drive conflict, or that's just the way the game is with the 'right' installation.
So, if you install according to screen directions and play the game, you should see the following files under System>Storage>Games and Apps>gtav:
Saved Game: (game stage save) - 324KB
Downloaded Items: gtav - part0 - 2.0GB
Downloaded Items: gtav - part1 - 2.0GB
Downloaded Items: gtav - part2 - 2.0GB
Downloaded Items: gtav - part3 - 1.7GB
If you manually install the Play disc, you'll add the following file:
Installed Xbox 360 Game: Grand Theft Auto V Disc 2 - 7.8GB

So installed the play disk onto a USB drive I had. How do you pin the USB drive to the home menu? I can't seem to figure out how. I went to the storage settings but I don't see an option under the USB drive to pin to home menu. Thanks.

Installed disk 1 to the HDD and disk 2 to the USB flahs drive. No pop ups or blurry ground textures.

Answer me this fellow gaffers, I work in IT specifically networking but am a bit baffled by this. If I install the play disc on a separate external hard drive, not a flash USB stick and then install the "install" disc on my 360 hard drive will this be ok? Just played it for a while and no pop in or anything so seems ok???

that video isn't bad when compared so some stuff I've seen. this problem really manifests itself when driving a fast car. It got so bad the entire road I was on hadn't loaded yet and I could see all the geometry underneath.
this game really needed next gen versions. 7year old hardware limitations are souring our experience of this great game.

well ...
the explanation being thrown around is that the game utilizes just about the entire bandwidth available, which means that if you double down on a single source (say the official 360 HDD), the game is pulling data from both the discs at once, which causes some lag.
If you're using an external HDD, you're still connecting it to your 360 via the USB connector right ? so that should be fine. Considering that the 360 puts a cap of 16MB/s on read speeds of the drives, if you've got a half decent external drive, it should be fine.
That way, the HDD isn't doubling for both discs data, and you're simply streaming the second disc content from a separate source (not so unlike how you can use any USB and run your MP3's while playing any game on your 360).
Unlike other multi disc 360 games, where you switch discs, here .. your 360 is pulling two disc worth of data at once, which is what creates the bottleneck I suppose.
The disc structure is so that most of the game's 'game data' is what is the mandatory install of disc 1, disc 2 contains all the radio data and streaming content. So, disc 1 takes priority I guess.
Hope my shot is accurate and gives you some clarification.

play-disc/disc 2 installs on hdd but stops around 46% when installing on kingston 14 gb G3 usb 2.0, error says to clean the disc
then i installed disc 1 to hdd and moved it to flash and installed disc 2 on hdd

So are you saying the way to be sure its reading from the USB is to take the disc out of the tray, click the USP pin, then insert the disc.......every time i want to play?
That doesnt sound like something i might be interested in.

no install play disc to a USB, if you then try to play the game without the disc in the dvd drive the game will not work, you have to have the dvd in the drive as when you go to start the game from the icon on the desktop it goes to the USB it is linked to but it needs the DRM info/files (to stop people just installing on a USB & then letting friends do it for free games) so put the disc in the dvd drive & it will spin up do a bit of checking i dunno sixty seconds maybe two minutes, it will then spin down the dvd drive.
i just leave the USB in the slot, mine has two USB slots at the front being a original elite, i have another with back up game saves.
you know it is playing from the USB because you cannot here the dvd drivie spinning, just leave the USB in the slot & when you want to play GTA just put the play disc in the drive as normal, but it will read from the USB you have installed the play disc on.

I'm really happy the USB drive works. Just installing the game made me realize how loud my disk drive is (old Elite - black).
I got a 32Gb USB 3.0 drive. I doubt the 360 has 3.0 but I figure this is the only game I'll use it with and once it comes out for another platform I'll switch and I'll just use the drive normally for stuff.
HDD: Forced install disk.
USB: Play disk.
HDD: Save Files
Seems to run great, don't have to do any tricks and since this is the only current gen game I'm playing I just leave the disk always in the 360.
It's not "quiet", there is still fan noise but it's like a Kenny G concert compared to NOFX in a tiny venue that was the 360 disk drive.

250GB HDD: Forced install disc
16GB USB 3.0 Stick: Play disc (2)
Internal 4GB memory: Save files
Will post results, I was running the standard expected setup yesterday and noticed pop up textures and blurred delayed textures and somewhat jarring frame drops.
I did turn on the trumotion option on my 55" LG cinema display, gives the illusion of 60fps most of the time.

Is it possible to transfer the HDD data to a USB stick too? So you have both discs on separate USBs? Depending on the read data of the sticks this should be even more optimal right? Or is the HDD data locked?
Edit: Or.. would that be the same as installing both discs on the HDD? What's the transfer rate with the slim 250gb HDD anyway? Google gives me nothing.

installed disc 2 on flash on second attempt and disc 1 on hdd
cleared system cache from both (pre patch this method helped for skyrim)
i think now the game looks less jaggy
also there was input lag before in menu now the issue seems to be resolved
or may be im happy because i installed it the way it was recommended and the game looked fine all the time

This has to be a joke. Do I seriously need to go through all this to play GTA V on the 360?
It's simple, really.
You either only install the install disc, then play normally. Or you can install both discs on separate drives if you dont want the Play disc to be constantly spinning, making noise during gameplay.

No - you don't have to go through "all this" to play GTA V on 360. This is for those that want optimum performance. It's not manditory. smh
No, it wont which is what this topic is about. Check the link in the OP for a video example of slow loading when you install both discs to the HDD.
How did you clear the game cache?
Well it depends on how you define "decent". Both on HDD is sub optimal but still very playable. The DF video is an extreme example with the intro. In game it is noticable but not nearly as pronounced.
On the Xbox Dashboard..
Select Settings > System Settings > Storage > Press Y button and select Clear System Cache

No? I guess you didn't read the OP. This is just for people who want to install both discs to get rid of disc spin noise and heat while playing. The USB method allows you to maintain performance by keeping the dual storage streaming in place that Rockstar has in place to optimize the game. There still will be a few pop ins in the game if you're hauling ass through the city but that happens without the second disc install as well.

Installed disc 2 to an external drive, game runs soooo much better. Almost no texture pop in, and the game doesn't freeze up any more at all while driving super fast and long distances. Not to mention silent 360.
Definitely the only way to play this game til it gets ported to better hardware.

There is no way the 360 would/should be able to access data from a USB device faster than its internal SATA drive!, theres just no way
Devices are throttled because people had to be able to download games onto memory cards, etc.
From Bungie's presentation on making Halo 3 work without a hard drive:
USB2 has a theoretical 20MB/sec max with the 360's usb ports, but they probably throttle those too.

No i mean a USB Storage Device VS 360 Internal HDD. The 360 techincally should always be able to access data faster from its internal HDD than a USB drive!
HDD + HDD = HDD (slow and silent)
HDD + DVD = HDD + DVD (fast and noisy)
HDD + USB = HDD + USB (fast and silent)

Technically. What I said above is the 360 artificially throttles the speed of the HDD for various reasons.
Does anybody else know anyone who is getting the game restart glitch? Where the error message pops up saying
'The game was restarted due to a problem with the storage device where the game data was installed'

His HDD might be dying.
After the X360 announcement with the issues of installing everything on the HDD the digital PS3 version this was to be expected.
I don't think there is much that can be done, i think Sony/R* should either offer refunds for people who got the digital version or send them a disc copy of the game.
This is the problem with digital versions of games, just think how bad this issue will be on even more demanding games on the X1 & PS4 !
