Crytek CEO: Ryse wouldn’t have run at 1080p on PS4 (Decision was choice, not hurdle)

Don't buy it one bit.
"Hey, you know that game we wanna make for that new Xbox?"
"Yeah?"
"Instead of targeting 1080p, let's go for 900p. No one will be able to tell the difference!"

This conversation happened at the start of development with no clue as to how the game would run on the system? Sure.

Anyone who thinks that not true, should turn on Crysis 3 and change some settings around.
Or better download SDK and change there settings around.

Crytek could easily hit 1080p on Xbone instead of 900p, which i dont approve personally [resolution >>> higher precision of effects, LoD], but its design choice. If it wasnt design choice, but performance choice, they wouldnt aim at Very High spec features from Crysis 3, but they do.

Spin it however you want. 1080p > 900p
1080p should be the standard next gen. Visual fidelity and detail should come second.

Twitter is very efficient, too. It doesn't matter what your opinion is, how much truth there is to the things (you think/claim) you know, at the end of the day, that is to say 140 or so characters later, it all scales nicely, as your final output is sure to be outrageous and insulting drivel.

Naughty Dog will shit all over this comment in pure 1080p glory. Shit comprised of over 1 million anti aliased, dynamically lighted polys

so what would be the benefit of 900p then

its not like the order in which they have it on a theatrical banner setting

This is the handwaiving part. If 900p is so 'efficient' and 'final output is 1080p', why not just do 720p?

It's like he doesn't expect consumers to understand the basics of graphics or care about the numbers. He isn't wrong.

crytek is not going to badmouth xbone.

and crytek will never say their xbone exclusive would have looked better on ps4.

does anyone really want to bash some developer because he "lied"? does anyone really expect crytek to be truthful and at the same time not tarnish their game and their exclusivity deal?

sometimes, people are just trying to find a way to hate something and someone. no one is going to buy that explanation anyway.

Honestly? I expect him to at least not tweet "Full HD" knowing well exactly what that entails. He deliberately tried to mislead his customers.

And yes, I do expect companies to not straight up lie about their products. The answer is fine since game development is always about the tradeoffs and compromises. They went with 900p and developed a ridiculously good-looking product, totally understandable. But to straight up lie about the resolution through semantics?

Bullshit, I say.

Sure, but more effects > less effects. It always is and always has been a tradeoff to push higher resolutions, making it a design choice

Compromising image quality in favor of visual fidelity via enhanced shaders is, in his view, a more efficient solution.

So i don't get it. How is that not a power problem if you have to compromise something, and how more power wouldn't let you have both..

The subtlety here, i believe is that if you design your game to run a certain way and you have to downgrade it. It's "hurdle". But if you're smart enough to make that downgrade before you reach the problem, it's a "choice".

Because it's not open platform and compromises would have to be made to improve more readily identifiable improvements in the coming years. I would have them sacrifice resolution (upscaled to 1080p) as opposed to scaling down levels, models, introducing more LoD related issues etc which can fundamentally detract from visual experience.

Is there a genuine reason 900p could be a more efficient design choice than 1080p if the hardware can handle 1080p ?

If they couldn't achieve 1080p while also having enhanced shaders, then surely that right there is a technical hurdle? They had to sacrifice one for another. Why would you simply chose to do that if there where no technical limitations, even if they are apparently unnoticeable? The dude makes no sense.

You're not supposed to think about his statement so deeply, it was choice I tell you. lol

So he's basically just saying that Crytek would always rather push more shaders and effects on consoles instead of resolution. Same as they did with Crysis 2 and 3 on consoles.

Hey, on PC you can make such choices in every game all day long. And guess what - native resolution is ALWAYS the best choice.

I really hope that that does not become some sort of internal mandate.

Because of framerate?
I don't think it's mandatory, i just think that's what's going to happen. Look at ps3 and how the vast majority of sony's internally developed games ran at 720p.
Looking at this first batch of sony games for the ps4 (they all seem to be 1080p, as far as i'm aware of, i could be wrong), it seems to me they're kinda pushing for that bullet point.

So basically he's saying that they eee never targeting 1080p in the first place. I don't agree that that's the best method, but I accept it. I just don't understand why they wouldn't even WANT 1080p. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Ding, ding, ding.

Crytek is the last studio to look towards when it comes to giving a shit about optimization, framerate or resolution over prettier graphics. Maybe they could've achieved what they've achieved so far on PS4 with a 1080p resolution, but they still would have just kept pushing the cards until they were back to where they are.

I feel like they are just making it worse. They should just stop talking about this. In a couple of months probably no-one will care anyway.

...
or is it?
Well, considering that the average person wouldnt be able to tell the difference between 900p and 1080p, the extra power could be put towards better physics, better lighting, better shaders, more fluid frame rates, more AI, decreased controller input latency, etc.

I'm talking about Ryse vs. a hypothetical GoW. Although PS4 is noticably more powerful, so it wouldn't really be a fair game.

Well GOW 4(?) will look better than many pc games in assets quality alone too. In the other hand, it would be interesting to see what Crytek actually does with PS4 hardware, but it would probably be a multiplat.
