Both linked to NeoGAF, lol

Fucking hell, imagine if HL3 is actually announced.

You upvoted the posts. This is YOUR doing

I... uh... only did it to highlight the posts for the screenshot, or something.

Oh, so that was Reddit? I always thought they don't visit GAF because most of them sound very bitter, when they complain about not getting authorized ("damn elitists").

I think a big chunk of reddit doesn't actually read the comments, just upvoting/downvoting and clicking links. Wonder if there are any stats on that.

I've been waiting for something "official" like this for such a long time that I really don't know how to react or feel about this.

How come Reddit has better servers than GAF?

We should be superior. Reddit is unreadable.

And they don't even have gifs.

reddit was started with an angel investment from an incubation firm; was later bought by conde nast (ie one of the world's largest magazine publishers); is probably worth in the mid-9 figures; and is one of the top 100 sites on the internet by traffic.

How a site as ugly and with such unreadable UI can be worth 9 figures is beyond me.

Looks like something I could knock up with a few friends in 48 hours.

And yet, it is a sewer of filth compared to NeoGAF. Goes to show you that you can't buy your way to quality.

I still haven't played HL2. Should I ? I didn't really enjoy the first game all that much.

Yes. On PC. It's dirt cheap and is old enough to play perfectly fine on most computers by now. The good news is you probably have tons of time to play it before HL3 so why not play HL1 source edition first while you're at it? :p Maybe you'll come around to it after all this time.

Yeah, I can't understand how it works. The whole format confuses me to no end.

Man just imagine what the game actually getting announced will be like.

A lot of people on r/games talk shit about GAF, yet whenever news is broken on GAF it's linked. Hah

Ironically them not changing is probably part of what's keeping them afloat.
A botched overhaul would be mutiny. It's best not to dive into the same cliff digg tried.

Okay Valve, cat's out of the bag. Stop stepping around the issue. Announce it.

Just put a huge banner on the steam start page with big letters "HL3" in the center and we'll be content... for the moment.

I work in trademarks, and it is probably worth pouring some cold water over all this excitement. A registered trademark lasts awhile before a company has to demonstrate use of that trademark. Although I don't know what the laws are like in the EU, it is presumably somewhat similar to US law where it could still be years before anything gets announced.

Why are they registering this trademark now? There could be any number of potential reasons depending on their history of opposition proceedings, settlement agreements, and other business considerations that affect their legal strategy. Point is, registering a trademark doesn't necessarily mean a company has a product that they are ready to roll out.

But how did it become popular in the first place?

I tried reading it once. It was awful.

But it means they might be getting serious with it

Reddit maybe ugly, but it is a very robust website despite its ridiculously boring design. It is not unreadable in anyway, the quality of content is actually good on most subreddits, but the comments section is up for a toss most of the time - much like any other internet forum.

Try Reddit Enhancement Suite for Chrome/Firefox, it's a great extension that gives Reddit a little more functionality.

As for the topic - have we clarified that this is not a hoax or any kind? Because I want to be believe. I so want to believe.

It might mean that. It also might mean they are just filing an application to protect their rights in some completely unrelated matter. We can speculate all day about that, but basically we don't really know any more about Valve's plans than we did yesterday or the day before about Half-Life 3.

How about us that are Redditors AND gaffers? I love both sites dearly. And for the record there's an /r/gifs.

Reddit as a site is a fantastic idea. Seriously. Relevant content for you for any topic you desire, dictated by other people who enjoy similar things (thus the subreddits).

However, Reddit's downfall is its popularity and loose rules. When so many people come together in a relatively unmoderated environment, the bad, predictable side of the internet comes out. (Unless you enjoy memes and similar jokes and similar opinions everywhere) Subreddits help, until they become a certain level of popular, then you move to a next one and repeat. (also some subreddits are well moderated, and those are better)

Which is why something like NeoGAF is ultimately superior as a concept, because of the tight moderation and especially the account system. It simply encourages higher quality content. I never thought something lie this could take off though, and about that, how on earth did NeoGAF become popular? I am very happy that it.

I'm actually beginning to think that this has merit and is not just an application to renew the trademark. It just makes sense.

SteamGame

They NEED a new game to prove that their controller has a purpose for those who are extremely skeptical. A game MADE with the controller in mind from the onset.
