Haven't played pokemon since red and ruby, just read up a little bit on EVs and nature. How common is EV training and breeding among players of the game? I'm kind of casually getting back into the series and don't care to be super competitive but wouldn't mind having some balanced matches online and winning a few. Will I be at a complete disadvantage against most players if I ignore this stuff?

If so, how difficult is it to obtain a pokemon with a specific nature?

Yes, you will be at significant disadvantage if you ignore both EV and Nature as they are two out of three of stat growth. EV isn't very hard to do with Super Training now as the task feel less tedious (the mini game still fun for me) and they give you an indicator of how much your Pokemon have their EVs. Nature is a bit more tricky and more luck reliant. The easiest way to obtain a Pokemon with a specific nature is by breeding them. The method is quite simple, you just need to give Everstone to one of the parent that have the Nature you want. That way easier for you to get your desired Nature, or you can use Pokemon with Synchronize ability to find them in the wild.

Well, yes and no.

You can buy the two you didn't receive from Sycamore, but they're all one-off. The man in the stone shop will only sell the two you're missing.

Not entirely true.

Man in the stone shop ended up selling me a second Charazardite X

Wait, what?

Unless I misunderstood what you meant, which was you can only ever get the two you're missing from him

The stone the guy offered the first time I talked to him was a Charazardite X for 150k. I grabbed it for trade bait later on.

That's what I meant, yes. He's only offered the two I didn't already have so far.

Yeah, he hasn't offered me the Ivysaurite yet. I just thought it was weird that the first stone he offered as the one I already had.

Where is the Destiny Knot found?

There's a woman in Lumonise city, I think in one of the side passages, that will give you one after you defeat her in a battle. Not sure if she's only post game or not, as that's when I found her.

wonder trade a lot -> use PGL to buy loads of rare candies -> use rare candies.
This is mostly effective on high level pokes, though.

Is there any downsides to use rare candies rather than traditional leveling? Just wondering if it affects stat growth or anything

Do I have to add friends from within the game or something? I can only ever see one friend in the PSS even though I know there are plenty others are or were playing.

Zero downsides.

Wait, what happened to all that EV/IV stuff that people used to go on and on about?
I know one of them uses that training app, but what about the other one?

EV s can be gained from the app. IV s come "installed" as soon as the mon is created and doesn't change.

Hmm? Is this true, I've always learned it messes up stat growth. Is my life a lie?

You only get evs from knocking out other pokemon. If you use a ton of rare candies you'll reach a level without the stats from the evs. Ev training changed at some point-its now possible to gain them even at level 100 and still benefit. So now there's no downside. In gen 1 if you rare-candied to 100 you would have missed out on ev stat boosts forever.

In the supertraining screen, in the graph with the stats of the pokemon, what does the darker area in the center represent?

You can EV train even at lv 100, always have been.

In Gen 3 and 4 ev related stat growth was limited to items only at level 100. Gen 1 and 2 would recalculate stats when boxing/unboxing and Gen V did away with the limitation entirely.

It used to be a bad idea but now it's fine.

Nope, you could throw them into a PC and the stats would alter in Gen 1.

So I just noticed my starter is a female of the Hardy nature. I understand this is rare? I know the nature means it won't favor one stat over another, but what are the benefits of having a female starter?

I kind of assumed that means they're using an O-power, but I'm not 100% certain on that.

answering my own question.

A friend of mine said that they are using an O-Power and that you can go and choose to copy that O-Power for free.

Which includes O-Powers that you still didn't got like Breeding and Exp

Didn't find any info about this on the internet except on a random gamefaqs thread:

To get the last O-power,
you have to have max style points in Lumiose City, then you'll find Mr Bonding in Cafe Introversion.

Serebii mentions the first part but not the second part. Took me ages to find him!

Should I tip? What does it do?
Can't find a conclusive answer just yet. Current speculation is that it affects shiny rates. Unconfirmed.

I can see this becoming a myth.
Better start tipping in real life too, just to be sure.

First time playing a Pokemon game and so far enjoying it quite a lot. But i'm actually wondering if I need to level up more pokemons for my team, since I have been sticking with the same 6 pokemons for awhile now.

I find it rather hard to decide if the Pokemons im using are actually good, I have no trouble during battles but im mainly keeping them in my team since I like the way they look :p

Whats a proper strategy for deciding what types of Pokemons you keep in your team?

Exactly WTF are O Powers and how are they leveled up?

It's new feature in XY which will help you in amazing way. Like, it can be use to increase your stats during battle, increases the chances of encountering a pokemon, having a discount when buying at the mart and more more more.

As for level-up, it will be on how many times you used the o-power. Probably like 15-20 for level 1 to reach level 2? Something like that. I think level 3 is the highest level for o-power

Any tips for happiness evolving pokemon in this version (espeon and umbreon especifically)? Does Pokemon Amie help?

I keep evee in the front of my party and then get it back so it can be involved in battle/level up without fainting, but I wonder if it's there some complementary technique to make it evolve a bit faster.

Use proteins, irons, calcium, zincs, hp ups, rare candies, whatever on them. Also moo moo milks, soda pops, lemonades, fresh water instead of potions.

Amie does nothing for friendship.
