DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Lol talk about cherry picking, judging by the video who could find an imagine that look equally as crap on the PS4 version.

Its very telling how ppl are posting a X1 shot and mocking it and acting like the PS4 is god gift without even posting a comparison shot of it.

lol

Yeah...as someone getting both who thinks the disparity isn't as big as I first thought it would be, this picture is just cherry picking. You can literally find an image for the PS4 looking just as bad. We won't get anything close to a multiplayer comparison until we get direct feed video and/or youtube videos (even though those are compressed as well, like IGN). The PS4 will look better, but this picture is no way representative of what's on the x1 multiplayer

Man, I watched the IGN video, other then like one time where a tree in multiplayer looked a lot more aliased on XO then on PS4, it was really hard for me to notice differences.

Are my eyes broke? IS NEXT GEN NOT FOR ME?

Your eyes aren't broken. Outside of the aliasing, the differences are not significant for the Single Player.

For MP, there seems to be some real problems on the XO that go beyond simple aliasing.

The first thing I thought when I saw blurry textures on PS4 version was that it was upscaled. Really no other reason. Plus the XB1 versions look less blurry when they should look more blurry. 720 upscaled to 1080p should look more blurry than 900 upscaled to 1080p.

Seems like DF upscaled ps4 to 1080p and key native resolution for x1.

Oh man that multiplayer footage...holy CRAP what happened to the XB1?

9xBb87a.png

Zero motion blur too in multi for XB1.

The IGN footage has massively blown out white levels while the DF footage has badly crushed black levels. Hard to tell which version is actually accurate until people have the system in their hands.

I know games are gonna get better over the generation graphically like every generation.

Still gulf on where I thought/wanted us to be this many years after the current 360/PS3 gen stated and what we actually are getting in disheartening.

Maybe I just expected to much, but IDK GAF. The more I actually see the closer we get to the launch of next gen the more I think... I've waited 8 years and this is what I get?!?!?

The console exclusives will wow you. Multiplats like this will have the PC running the definitive version. If you have decent PC, I would recommend purchasing it there and sparing yourself the heartache.

Quick question:

Would video capture compression help either console's cause any more than the other's?

What I am asking is, will PS4's resolution advantage be even more noticeable on an actual TV? or is the video capture compression being especially harsh to the XB1?

Or does it not make a difference?

Compression hides detail. So yes, PS4 version would suffer more.

IGN's video is a smeary mess and trying to take screenshots would be pointless. I downloaded the 1080 version (it appears it's only 720) and it has a ~3MB/s bitrate. Awful.

Different beast. But if you're talking about DF, we are only now starting to wonder if there's something messed up with their capture equipment because as you can see here, the captures from IGN and Videogamer looks completely different from DF's.
Yeah, was going to ask next about if DF wasn't being accurate with us after all this mention.

LOL these pictures are like opposite ends of the spectrum. One is super washed out with contrast on zero, the other is super crushed blacks with contrast on 100. What a worthless comparison. I never understand why they try and do these comparisons without calibration. Unless this is all part of the DF plan since so many people are saying the XB1 version is superior. In screenshots it looks like it is. Watch the video on a TV. It looks like poo.

Or the scaler in the PS4 sucks or someone just fucked up. Lets hope they keep making games 1080p.

It's obvious that DF is the odd man out here given that we have 3 other comparisons via IGN, Jackfrag, and videogamer. DF massively fucked up by not doing proper adjustments.

So much for the theory that MS was going to force parity. DICE took the ball and ran off the goddamn pier with it.

Different scaling alghoritms will produce different results. More at eleven.

Alright, I will bite. What scaling algorithm is the XB1 and PS4 using? I doubt there would be that much noticable difference between modern scaling algorithms but I could be wrong.

Edit: Also, you think an algorithm can make 720 upscaled to 1080 look less blurry than 900 upscaled to 1080?

Those PS4 fanboy tears... Yummy! You got your proof and you're still trying to spin shit.

I have a hard believing this isn't sarcasm but if it isn't, you should probably watch the IGN video but only if you can handle objective comparisons which clearly you probably can't judging by your response above.

You're ironically talking about those people spinning shit when the IGN video is clear as day and every site has admitted the PS4 version is better so far. So please tell me how anyone else is spinning it while you're not?

I really have a hard time picking up sarcasm during these "console wars".

Ok, I think I understand now. I'm not really technical, going more by what I'm actually seeing with my own eyes but this makes sense. So by limiting the PS4 footage, we "drop" down to what the XBO footage looks like thus showing the PS4 version is graphically better. Yeah, I sound stupid but I'm pretty much putting it in laymen's terms here.

More or less, because it gets rid of that "washed out" claim which is unfounded because we weren't comparing two identical RGB feeds to begin with.

Let me know if I'm missing anything

PS4 version has a higher resolution, has AA, has HBAO, and better motion blur at a higher average framerate. Why is there even a debate still going on?

I was really only expecting a resolution difference. But better performance and added effects is a surprise to me.

XB1 version is not missing motion blur in the MP footage. Where are people getting this? IGN video clearly shows that it has it.

If the Xb1 has been captured at the native 720p which by most accounts it has, I'm going to wait to judge until I see the PS4 and the XB1 displaying on a 1080p display and see how the upscaling holds up. That being said I'm going to investigate preorders to see which console is going to have the most online players. I love Battlefield 3 and I'm definitely getting 4 for the PC but wouldn't mind having it for PS4 or XB1 and my decision on which one to get is mostly going to be based on the size of the online community.

Here it is one more time!!

Crushing the levels to Limited RGB and "Sharpen More" (one time) for the PS4 picture replicates the XO results!

I hope this makes sense for you guys.

Excellent post man.

What is this supposed to prove? That if you fiddle around with settings the PS4 version matches the XBone version? With the extra "power of the 8GB GDDR5" the PS4 has the difference should be easily noticeable off the bat without having to artificially alter anything. The PS4 version still looks blurrier too. There is no way the difference is as great as everyone was expecting.

Christ, look at those ground textures. How is the PS4 textures better than the XBO? I mean look at them.
a) They're not all one flat shade of gray
b) They're not crudded up with a shitton of Sharpen noise
c) Much less aliasing for objects on top of them

You are literally the people that think pulling the crust off of bread improves it.

It proves that DF fucked up their captures and that some people like black crush.

Do we know which video this comparison is from
?

I'm extremely concerned about Digital Foundry's claim that PS4 used software scaling for this game.

The 360 and Xbone both have built-in hardware scalers, which are pretty decent quality, and don't take performance away from the GPU. We can see here, in the Digital Foundry screens at least, that the scaling method used by the PS4 is somewhat blurry. This could be a terrible thing if it were to become the norm for all non-1080p PS4 games in the future. I don't want my image quality compromised even more than the slight reductions in pixels rendered already do.

I could have SWORN I read somewhere that the PS4 finally has a built-in hardware scaler. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

You can adjust your TV settings to get the contrast of the Xbox version on the PS4.
There's nothing you can set to remove the jaggies of the Xbox version.
There's nothing you can set to increase the framerate of the Xbox version.

Man, the Xbone MP screen grabs look like horseshit. PS4 is nothing to write home about either in that regard. But wow, that Xbone stuff looks like a mediocre 360 shooter.

I'll debate all night long with those that feel the differences in SP are significant. But the MP footage is undeniable; it is immediately noticeable that the Xbox One version has issues there.

But the PC version doesn't have those crushed blacks that makes that black guy's hair in that 1 pic siiiiiing!

SweetFX to the rescue. Seriously I hate those contrast filters, people were going insane with them when Skyrim came out and it made the game look terrible.

Gotcha. Really appreciate the responses clarifying these things. I always feel a bit stupid when it gets technical in these kinds of threads. I'm not taking any sides when it comes to Xbox One or PS4 and with that, legitimately interested in seeing which one is the better version.

If by blurry you mean isn't jaggy on every surface past 6 feet then yeah it's super blurry.

Ughh that's not the point. It's to prove that the Xbone crushes black detail and over sharpen the image and is easily replicated. PS4 looks more in line with PC.
