DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

So the question is. How much of this is down to the lack of hardware power and how much of this is down to the lack of maturity of the development tools for both systems. Because if a next gen game console can't run a game like this in native 1080p then why did the platform holders even bother?
Just compare the performance to bf4 running on pc with similar parts and settings.

Why are so many people bothering to reply to Salvor.Hardin's nonsense?

The XB1 version could be 480p and he'd still say he prefers it.

I know..i just...yeah you are right.

Colours of the PS4 are so washed out. I much prefer the more saturated and contrasted colours of the Xbone. But the PS4 looks undeniably a bit sharper. Meh. Lame next gen is lame.

This can be done through your television remote controller, the plastic brick looking thing with buttons on it. Try it, right now, with your current consoles. You make it look sharp with contrast, or smooth and "washed out".

Who are you to tell me that I can't compare?
Off course quality and price tags matter and I'm not deciding which console to buy simply because of BF4, that would be stupid.
I'm deciding because of the games, the controller, the UI and more.
Am I worried about the xbone keeping up in the future ? YES ! But they will probably and I godly hope so, will use the clod as they say to make games keeping up and better MP

He is not saying you 'cannot' compare, he is saying you already made up your mind so what is the point of comparing.

You are deciding on quality and price, no?
Sony wins on both.

If you want to buy a Xbox One buy one. You do not need to justify your purchase to anyone, but acting as if the mysterious cloud is going to do anything to narrow the quality and price gap is silly.

Any comment from the devs or MS on the differences. Someone has some explaining to do.

I prefer the colors of the Xbox version. But I prefer the detail of the black/darker areas in the PS4 version.

To be fair, how I (and others) calibrate a TV isn't always the best fit for games. The standards are aimed at film content.

Game content, however, has no real standard so it's impossible to properly calibrate a TV to work with it. I always like to do one "picture mode" to ISF specification, copy it, and then modify a second mode to produce an image more pleasing for games. Of course, I still keep sharpness disabled along with anything else "dynamic" as that ruins the image.

The problem here is that some people actually think these artificial enhancements look great. Why is that a problem? If people like the look of something, why not use it? The issue arises when the type of content switches. Those dynamic settings can look acceptable with certain types of imagery but, switch to something else, and suddenly the picture looks terrible. A bright outdoor scene looks vibrant and sharp, for instance, but a dark underground, dimly lit area will be completely missing detail while colors (such as skin tones) are destroyed often appearing more red/orange. Basically, those enhancements are poorly suited for ALL content.

Calibration is designed to provide an even, accurate experience across all range of content which matches what you were intended to see. As I said, it doesn't really apply to games as much due to lack of standards, but the results are still similar with some scenes being ruined by these enhancements.

In motion the difference is even more pronounced. Xbone version looks ghastly. And it chugs outputting so few pixels too.

I will say I think they've gone over the top on the PPAA on the PS4 version though. Destroys some of the texture detail as many have commented. However, the texture quality is exactly the same.

I also noticed that the Xbone has lower resolution shadows in places.

Is there a reason why Sony doesn't implement a hardware scaler in their consoles? Aside from a select few PS3 games that self-upscale, my TV has to upscale everything. It looks like BF4 PS4 will again upscale itself in place of a hardware scaler. Is there really any difference in quality between hardware vs software upscaling? This should be a middling issue as most, if not all games begin to pursue native 1080p but I was just wondering.

People can argue artistic choices and artificial edge enhancement (sharpening) but this finally answers my question about the hardware.

The PS4 is noticeably more powerful than the XBox One. There is no secret scauce.

Even if the XBO had the same power as the Wii U and the PS4 the same power as 2x Titan PC, there would still be fanboy's proclaiming the inferior was still the better choice. It's an inherent human flaw

Digital Foundry said the soldier's camo and ground textures were randomized.

"Ground textures appear different during the campaign mode, with variations of the same texture being planted in the same spot. Neither one is especially greater in detail, suggesting these tiles are partially randomised, much like the soldier camo designs on our character's arms. The PS4 does on occasion suffer from a slight delay in drawing in higher textures"
They create virtual texture for the terrain using splatting, it's quite easy to see in some of the bigger terrains when spawning between locations.
Apparently they do not create it identical each time, so this is the result.

Do we have footage if that mission being played on the Ps4? If not then you can't use it as a example. The comparison shown has x1 looking better in most scenes. Which surprises me.
They have short clips of it in that Gametrailers review. As I said, look for the onscreen PS4 indicators to tell which part is not from the PC. Even with those short clips, it's pretty damn noticeable.

Is there any evidence that they don't? AFAIK, GCN comes with hardware scalers out of the box. The differences in IQ are likely not due to presumed hardware/software scaling.

Just imagine what the Ps4 version will look like on your own monitor.

I'm just really excited for 64 players and 60fps.

Can't fathom how people think the Xbox One look better because of the sharpness and saturation. Is it the same people who have sharpness on their TV set to 100? It just amplifies everything that looks bad. Look at the original pictures (PS4, XbO) and look at how the birds look more like strange blobs and how awful the road ahead looks in the Xbox One pic.

Ghosts.

Most reports have been talking about BF4 running at a lower resolution for a while now even suggesting that the PS4 version was running at 720p.
Out of curiosity, have you informed Tom Morgan that his captures appear to have been of a limited RGB range rather than full RGB? If it is the case, which it appears to be, since other sites don't seem to be getting the same video. It may be worth a footnote/update to the article?

In theory there shouldn't be a big difference imo. Hardware scaling probably just doesn't need additional ressources. But I don't think this is a problem, because from the 33 games which will be released this year for PS4, Battlefield 4 is the only one with a <1080p resolution.

Okay this may have been explained earlier in the thread but it updates way to fast for to keep up. Anyways What are "crushed blacks" and how do tell?

So the X1 version is still review embargoed for two more weeks, while the PS4 version is not.

That's kind of proof right there that the difference is pretty real...right? Why wouldn't Microsoft show it then?

Somewhere, at some extra-doooooshy nightclub, in the most-dooooooshy corner of the massively-overpriced bottle service section, two complete asshole marketing guys who just finished doing a fat rail of coke in the bathroom just looked at their smartphones, laughed and high-fived each other because "They're buying it!!! We made that bullshit about the cloud up, and they're actually BUYING it!!!"

Very surprised at those images and videos. The resolution advantage on the PS4 is quite noticeable but everything looks like it's been passed through the N64's mud filter.

Gotta say I prefer the crisper Bone images and footage.

Xbox One appears to suffer from precisely what Halo 4 suffered from: amped contrast, unnatural colors, and jaggies. Am I looking st the right footage or has something been confirmed wrong with the XO footage?

im almost positive the PS4 has a hardware scaler...someone posted that Frostbite has a built in software scaler?
