Is Killzone: Shadow Fall PS4's killer app?

So I was thinking about this while I was in the process of actually pre-ordering SF myself, that this game seems to be the only one anyone is consistently talking about from the PS4's launch lineup. Knack is mostly being written off as a generic, uninspired cute version of God of War, Driveclub has been delayed and the third party offerings are a case of personal preference for which platform to purchase on.

So what makes a "killer app"? Is it the hype surrounding the game prior to launch? The quality of the game itself or its sales numbers? Or does a game qualify if it alone makes the purchase of a new console justified? I guess a lot of people will say "wait for reviews" but what is GAF's opinion?

I would personally say a cautious yes it is, but only until Knack proves itself to be far better than it appears.

Killzone: SF isn't going to sell PS4s on its own merit so no. Infamous, Naughty Dog, the Order, or Sony Santa Monica are going to be the ones to deliver that "killer app" (I don't like the term killer app)

Not really. Being noticeably better on 1 platform kind of decides that choice for most people.

But to answer your question yes because it's really the only choice there is. There's only 1 other retail exclusive at launch.

I think it will easily be the most successful entry in the franchise. It's pretty much the big showcase title for PS4 owners, and by being there at launch, strong sales for it are pretty much guaranteed. I don't think it's a killer app in the sense that it will sell people PS4s. I personally feel there are very few games I would ever give that kind of title.

Looks like an absolute marvel technically and gameplay wise so Yes.

In Glorious 1080p as well.

Yes.

I have no idea how it will play but a big, shiny FPS built for the system at launch is a pretty safe bet for launch 'killer app.' Most people won't even care about gameplay they just want to see great looking stuff.

As such I think Ryse is the xbox one's as well, even if the gameplay is subpar. It will be gorgeous and that launch halo should carry it.

Forza will be the best actual game... but even though it's a large niche - sim racers only appeal to certain people. Killzone and Ryse will be big, dumb, shiny fun.

Well PS4 is selling itself for now so it could be a "Resistance" situation where it's the highest profile game at launch and sells the most because of this, though this time the multiplat situation is much more favorable. Yes KZ is getting some significant hype based off the visuals but it will really need to deliver gameplay wise for it to be a killer app.

Anyways, I think infamous could be a bigger system seller if it delivers on what's been shown so far.

Not for me. Getting better performance from cross gen games along with sharing / streaming functionality is why I'm getting a PS4 at launch. I think KZ looks mediocre.

ADD New Gen Gamer
It is the technological showcase for the system, so yes I think. You pretty much have to play this game to get a glimpse of what next gen has to offer tech wise. All the rest of the games are almost just cleaner looking last gen games.

It's the PS4 exclusive people are most interested, but there's not a lot of competition there. A killer app needs to move consoles beyond the people who will be there for launch regardless and Killzone isn't the franchise to do that. Naughty Dog will probably be the ones to provide that service, though I'll be scooping up a PS4 for Infamous.

No. They don't have a killer game. Knack + KZ + Driveclub together were a good spread, but now its potentially not.

I think we'll see a lot of PS4 owners (like me) pick up Call of Duty or Battlefield before picking up Killzone.

Sony platforms don't generally have killer apps. It's usually the diverse lineup of 1st and 3rd party games that bring people in. So I don't think the PS4 generally has that out of the box. But you know it will happen. Hopefully sooner than later.

It's the killer launch app.

Despite never ever being as big as Sony or GG would had liked, Killzone is still a franchise with a relatively dedicated fanbase. That has merit, because it means the majority of the gamers who bought KZ2/3 would most likely get Shadow Fall on day-one.

If anything, I'm thinking Shadow Fall may very well exceed expectations. Everything about the new KZ sounds like it both wants to harken back to the core things that old KZ fans love, while adding enough new elements to suddenly make people look at the franchise differently from before.

Nah. Exclusive wise the launch is pretty weak so of course it's going to get the most pre-orders.

A killer app sells units by itself, people buy systems just for that game because it's a game that you pretty much couldn't get anywhere else.

It could be, but the Killzone franchise also seems to be something that people love to hate for whatever reason, even tho the games consistently review well and average above 8 on Metacritic. I think Halo fans see it as some potential threat (it's clearly not), when the two games have very little in common, and I think a larger group just like to pan the series simply because of the platform it's on.

I'm sure there are people who have played at least one KZ title and just actively don't like it, but based on what I've seen, it's easier for people to just dismiss Killzone out of hand everytime a new one comes out than acknowledge that it brings a solid experience to the table for both single and multiplayer.

Personally, the appeal of KZ to me has always been the political and quasi-religious struggles between the factions at work in the games. I find it far more interesting and in a lot of ways timely than most other games.

At this point the only PS4 exclusive that looks REALLY good to me is Galak-Z. Transistor, The Witness, and The Order all look really promising, too, though.

Yeah I agree with that.

In terms of launch games, that's probably a yes. I'm personally a bit more interested in Knack but that's me. Really, I'd probably consider Infamous Second Son a killer app.

Basically this. I also think Knack will be a great launch game.

Looks awesome and will be a big success but I don't think it's a killer app. They don't need one right now anyway.

Still, I do hope this is to the Killzone series what MW1 was to CoD. I love KZ and want to see it take off
