I'm laughing at the reactions here though.

I really hate it that they remove Swap Note, but apparently people react here as though they'll stop playing with their 3DSes and play with iPhones is just hilarious.

But then again this is GAF.

You could still draw rude stuff and PM them to friends on Miiverse, how is that any different?

Those can be reported and the offending person banned. Though I guess at that point the damage has already been done and dicks seen.

I discovered a few pedos fishing for young boys friendcodes on Colors 3D as well. Thankfully the devs were swift to curbstomp these assholes upon reporting them.

I can imagine how Nintendo is afraid of this. If you try to sell to families, this is the biggest horror story imaginable.

So they shut down this service because there is no way to track down the people and no way to moderate it? Honest question.

Not exactly, but Nintendo trashing their only messaging system - one that had a pretty solid set of dedicated users - is a stupid strategy when most people have alternatives to the 3DS.

The days of the GameBoy are over. There's a lot of portable devices competing for people's attention and pocket space. Nintendo should try to retain everything that keeps people focused on their system as opposed to other devices.

I thought all the crazy kids were using Snapchat nowadays anyway.

This seems a bit heavy-handed, but that's their way I guess.

I'm more mad about special notes stopping.

In any case this is really stupid and Nintendo should have seen this coming.

It's not that big of a deal to 3DS though. It's not like something that is inherent to the system. Like I said, exaggeration as though it's a pillar or something of the system.

With that said I'm still pissed off.

This really maddening yeah. I'll miss those dev-sent notes :(

Miiverse is coming soon to the 3DS. I think they're aware, considering Miiverse will be available from mobile devices and such.

GAF is public. We're talking about private conversations between people who have each other on their friends list (which isn't the easiest thing to do by accident with Nintendo's system).
Do you know how many friends on my 3DS I know in person? One

The rest are strangers I've never seen before. About 30 from GAF Pokemon friend safari and about the same number from random battles in the new Pokemon (battle someone twice and you have the option to add him to your friend list). Hello swapnote porn from/to strangers.

I bet after Pokemon the number of complaints about the issue will have skyrocketed since you now have a huge number of people who don't know each other on their friend list and people ARE stupid enough to share their porn with everyone on their friendlist.

So... Underaged sexting via spotpass I guess? I can understand why they'd disable the feature. They still view themselves as a toy company, as do many parents.

They're avoiding public backlash.

If you're an adult, you probably have a phone that can do the job better anyway.

Edit: also this

Disappointed.

So they cancel SwapNote. No more talking to friends, planning game times.

So what about Miiverse 3DS?

Around 60 or so.

You aren't everybody. I used to love looking at Swapnote periodically and downloading the cool images my friends would draw. They were extremely talented and it was awesome to look at. Sometimes they'd share stories they had in Animal Crossing. It was a really fun and cute way to communicate. Very disappointed in this move.

What Nintendo sadly doesn't realize is that being "Family-Friendly" is impossible in 2013.

You could buy your kids Dr. Seuss books up the wazoo, set child block so that it only shows PBS kids/Disney JR, never let your child go on the internet at all, shield them from the newspaper, the works. You can't stop some kid at school from showing them naughty stuff on their smartphones, or forbid them from listening to their playgroup teacher's relationship phone calls. Does that mean you have to invoke helicopter parenting, or home schooling? By all means no. Unless you want to hide our big beautiful world and the good people that inhabit it from your child.

What society accepts as family friendly stuff during whatever year will always be different from what was accepted before. Simpsons now has massive amounts of products for the young'uns', where as during it's infancy, it was considered inappropriate for minors. Batman's massively popular, but before that it spawned a massive thesis on how it was horrible for developing minds. (It was called "Seduction of the innocent", I believe.) Literary classics regarded as all-ages now, such as Tom Sawyer, were despised by protective types back during their first publication dates.

So Nintendo, here's the thing. Like the parent listed above, you try to protect the innocent. You can act like certain series that don't fit this quota (F-Zero, Mother, Metroid, Text-adventures) don't exist. You don't let them voice chat with strangers. You don't tell them everything when they ask you things, as you have skeletons within your closet (Hiding the transgendered Mario characters, Refusing to say the G-word even when whole games plots (Diamond/Pearl) revolve around it). But you can't stop children from going on avenues you don't own and being naïve with their information. You can put up barriers, such as the moderation on Miiverse, but you can't fully control the path of those you're trying to protect. No parent fully can either. Does that mean you shouldn't allow anything ever? No way. Instead, if you really want to continue on the daunting task of being family friendly, you have to admit that not only are there scumbags out there, but there's also good people out there as well. More so then the scumbags. These good people look out for their friends and family, with or without your interference. Until that idea has been realized, you'll never be able to truly make things that are family friendly; as the family of 2013 consists of more than just the child and their parents.

tl;dr: Times change and you can't protect everyone every time, but Nintendo should've anticipated system abuse/scumbags before creating a "Friend" messaging service and have instigated moderation on photos; if they want to still be family-friendly. Or as some have said, an account system, so that the bad apples can be removed without leveling the whole orchard.

Hopefully this makes sense. I was struggling to conclude my thought due to how late it is where I am, so if it sounds disjointed near the end, I apologize in advance.
It makes a whole lot of sense. The logical way would be having a ban system in place, so the offenders could be prevented from using the service. Not taking down the whole service.

But the logical way and Nintendo's way rarely go together, sadly.

I'm laughing at the reactions here though.

Yeah, how dare people be angry about a company shutting down the only means of communication their console has?

You're part of GAF too. Don't you think you're better than the rest.

I don't understand exactly why to stop all services and not just the picture attachment one.

I understand why Nintendo is worried about this, but in this case, with their friend-code system in place, seems a little bit too much.

But again, I can imagine the FOX News headlines "PEDOS USING NINTENDO 3DS
(reads Three Dees)
TO FIND VICTIMS", and well, in this case it makes sense Nintendo is shutting the entire system down.

But then again, Parental controls and all that Jazz.

They better remove the whole PSS feature from Pokemon next. Why?

You can set your profile image to any JPEG on your 3DS. Only friends can see it but given how you can request anyone to be a friend in-game...

It is clear that is the only solution.

Seems like it.
Thanks. If the issue is that Nintendo cant do anything, then Nintendo should have used an account system instead, it would solve all these problems. What about online voice chat by the way? It it possible to talk a lot of shit to others and Nintendo cant do anything about it?

This better be the lead in to Mii Plaza 3DS or Nintendo just did a fuckton of damage to the PR They got from the Gen 1 Pokemon fans that came back with XY.

"Hey, we could come up with like some safeguarding options, or hell just remove the ability to upload pictures"

"Fuck it, let's shut it down completely. It's like 4:30 man, I gotta get home."

Pathetic really. Roll on Miiverse.

Wow....
I used Swapnote for more than a month with 60+ people and never got a lewd one (including how to draw a cat :lol).
Sad that they had to stop this :(

They can ban you on Miiverse. Its just Swapnote where they can do jackshit.

Hmm...depending on the severity of the situation I can understand this.
I'd guess for it to work the way they'd want it to, they'd have to rework SwapNote quite a bit. So, maybe they just decided it isn't worth it anymore since they wanted to suspend the service as soon as Miiverse arrives anyway.
