Xbox One practically unusable without day one update

Sounds like its about the same size as the Day 1 WiiU patch, so that could be a good guiding idea of how long it will take to download and patch considering global net speeds won't have changed much since last year, assuming the actual patching process is quick as well.

Before you shout about numbers yes the WiiU numbers probably will be lower but MS have a sodding massive cloud that I would expect them to use to ease this patching process as much as possible, it won't be perfect however (it never is).

I bet there will be a few angry parents returning the system because they don't want to deal with that.

Can it at least play games without the update? Also, couldn't they put the update on one of the games? Nintendo did this with the Wii, where certain games will have the latest firmware on the disk to be installed to the console.

No, you can't do anything.

Really? It's pretty much the norm these days. It sucks and is annoying, but I'm so used to shit launches that I don't see the point in getting outraged. I just wait for things to cool down first.

It's terrible that a new game system can't play games out of the box. Gonna be lots of frustrated customers and kids at launch that don't know a fraction of the troubleshooting tactics we do. Yeah, there are patches for other things, but not basic functionality.

Just imagine the kind of letdown you'd experience if your net connection happens to be down or slow on launch day. It's risky to ship a product that won't work right away. It's a bad business practice IMO.

No. Microsoft should burn to disc the necessary patch in order for the console to function and ship them out to retailers. Anything afterward is the responsibility of the owner.

Consoles are already in the supply chain and the OS will be updated beyond that point. So MS would need to print millions of CDs and overnight them to each retailer? Do you have any idea what the cost of that would be?

If this is really an issue, shouldn't Sony be doing the same thing? Firmware 1.5 is required to unlock most of the features of the console.

This is so ridiculous.

It's what MS have said from the beginning. It's why GAF exploded. And it's why they changed almost all their policies.

I think it's shitty too but it's not news. We've known this since the reveal. Even mainstream news reported it, sometimes with several articles.

Required implies that. PS4 can kinda play games but that is about it (SP no MP). Everything else is in the 1.5 firmware. No Blu Ray, no DVD.

Both consoles are pretty much a shell or useless without the Day One patches. Its the new normal. Everyone should be used to it by this point. Are you really expecting them to have the OS finalized when the consoles were getting manufactured?
Oh no, a video game console only being able to play video games, the horror. There's no kinda about it. There's local multi.

For real folks? Seriously who has no internet connection and yet buys a €499 console at launch. Not many people, if any at all, who buy such an expensive piece of hardware without having internet access.

Me, I don't pay for internet but I like to enjoy media still. What's wrong with that? I have a laptop (more expensive than Xbox one) but I don't pay for internet. Why can't a someone consume PHYSICAL media without access to the internet?

Are the PS4 players really kidding themselves into saying they aren't going to install the day one update?? OF COURSE YOU ARE. Your sitting on NeoGaf... you have internet. Lets not split hairs here.

Double standards, wow.

The PS4 can't do much out of the box either without an update. But far fewer people were complaining about that in that respective thread. The PS4 can't even play a bluray without the update!!!

And people saying, yes but the PS4 can play games out of the box. Well so you're telling me that you won't be updating your PS4 immediately? You'll play all the games first? Sure, if the games you're playing don't require an update before playing!

Mountain out of a molehill indeed

How so? Do you buy a cell phone without a plan?

Cell phones by their very nature require a network to function. Video game consoles do not. Also, network providers will setup your phone for you no problem and at no cost. Will retailers be doing that for Xbox One (and PS4) buyers? If not, then your comparison has no merit.

Come on, you know you're making a stupid comparison.

MS should send stacks of "Day 1 Update" DVDs to stores so they can hand them to customers when they buy XB1.

EDIT:
didn't realize I was beaten:

This device is obviously not for you then. I don't pay for cable TV so I'm not even in the discussion for DVRs.

I would like to see it done in 2 parts. Have a smaller initial download that opens the ability to play games then let everything else be downloaded in the background.

It's funny how much faux outrage there was about Sony's 1.5 patch notes. People were like "holy shit, the thing barely works out of the box". Even many podcasts commented on this with the same sort of shock and awe about it all.

Should be interesting to see how much shock this announcement is met with.

This would be a good workaround. So you get a disc with your purchase, no matter where you get it.

I actually don't think that there are going to be a lot of parents freaking out on Christmas morning. I think there's going to be more like, where is the Wi-Fi password, honey? Like everything else.

Maybe they'll patch the game discs as well, I believe that's common.

Rumoured to be 1.3GB.

And we've known this since they announced the Day 1 update months ago.

The Xbox One is a brick until it's updated.

1.3 GB for a day one patch? Isn't that similar to the Wii U? I remember watching the Giant Bomb livestream when they got theirs and they spent forever updating the thing.

I'm trying to imagine someone in a rural area of the country downloading a 1.3GB patch on Christmas Day on dial-up. Yikes.

This isn't a new announcement.

Since June they have said the console requires a day one update.

Why do you get to define what a console is? Just because it has been that way, and that is your expectation? Well, times change.

I think it's safe to say that the PS4 has greater functionality than the Xbox One without the patch.

It is a complete non issue. I couldn't use my cell phone until it was set up...

False equivalency.

Besides, retailers will set up your phone for you. This would only be the same situation if retailers will set up your Xbox for you at the store.

I'm not saying this is as big a deal as some people are making it out to be. I'm saying that it's pretty shitty of people to downplay it. The day one patches don't affect me but I can see how it will suck for some people.

Yep. Some crazy projecting going on here.

I can install it while playing a game which is the reason I bought a game console.

Versus

I cant do anything until I download and install this unkown sized update, which may or may not be long depending on my internet.

I can see which one is easier.

The real question is, will the GAF servers survive the launch period so people can go crazy here while waiting for their consoles to update?

The better question is, will Microsoft's server be able to handle it, or will it be days, if not weeks before everything is stable enough for everyone to get the patch?

They needed to figure out a better plan than this. We all know those servers will come crashing down the minute the consoles are in people's hands, and those issues have ways of taking awhile to fix.

What? Cellphones are always connected? So anti consumer...

There was a rumor going around that Gamestops are getting wifi in the next couple weeks to help people get the day one patches for the new consoles. Should help a bit.

I'm going to guess no. Most Gamestop's already have WiFi since they hold the Pokemon events all the time, and I don't see Gamestop wanting dozens of people setting up their consoles and spending an hour downloading a patch. Not to mention they'd each need a screen to see what they're doing. It just isn't reasonable. They're a business, they want new people in at all times, and having a crowd just stand around and clog up the store isn't going to help sales.

So where does it say that the xbone can do nothing or is practically unusable without the day 1 patch?

This is some terrible spin. A double standard has to have people being hypocritical about their principles, having one set of standards for one thing while having a different set of standards for another. Pointing out that two video game consoles can play video games straight out of the box on a video game message board while another video game console cannot is not a double standard.

I can understand the need for a day 1 patch with these machines as they need to start manufacturing well before the complex software is ready. It's very different from consoles of old in that sense.

However, the systems should still offer a minimum level of functionality without an internet connection. You should be able to buy a game and play that game from a disc without internet. Perhaps the update will be included on disc? That would be the logical way of handling things.

And people saying, yes but the PS4 can play games out of the box. Well so you're telling me that you won't be updating your PS4 immediately? You'll play all the games first? Sure, if the games you're playing don't require an update before playing!
The fact is, for both consoles, you should be able to buy and use discs with these devices without an internet connection. PS4 offers this feature. Will Xbox One offer this as well? That's what isn't clear.

This won't an issue for the vast majority of buyers (especially this holiday), of course.

I didn't know that... not that it really matters as I'm not buying one, but it's getting to the point where consoles are like worse functioning computers. Constant, mandatory updates that take a half hour at least.. and now huge installs? FUCK.
