COD Ghosts Xbox One offline (2 weeks before launch) not possible without Live?

Titan Fall

Aren't you supposed to be able to play any game on any X1 that you log into your account from? Anyone who buys Titanfall knows it's online only anyway. That description looks very carefully worded to me. I'm not saying it is what I say it is but it certainly doesn't clear this up.

So MS has another knee jerk reaction and banned him, not wanting him to disclose any NDA'd info, which if anything would have built hype. Instead now he can't play offline and this will turn into another big PR problem.

It's as if somehow Sony has hired MS to market the PS4.

Well- to be fair, what if they didn't ban him, and he went online and shit was unfinished, and then he spread a bunch of news about Live being broken, etc, etc?

This is a Lose/Lose imo.

If this is just about it not being the full DRM removal patch. I find it hilarious that it extends so far to not even let you access your system settings.

Oh come on.

I think it's odd how the same person a few hours ago was upset about the wording Sony changed in there new term policies about used games and ownership being taken out of context and generating unwanted attention to going full circle here.

If your going to be that guy who likes leaks and wants to stir up question periods then at least have the same attitude regardless of platform.

I'd assume that update would be included on the game disk as well. I think the dash on my 360 updated when I popped in a new game disk (I don't have my 360 connected).

Yes, but the Xbox one wont be able to update from disc with the launch update...

Since the online requirement removal, its likely on a to do list, but isnt top priority

I don't give a shit what some dude who got a system early can or can't play. Nor should anyone else. This is just a stupid topic that has legs because it's about the Xbox...lol.

You gotta admit the title does catch your eye and that's pretty much why I'm posting in this thread at all. Same for you apparently.

Edit: That and it might just be a reveal of the what the DRM that never was is like.

If only they specified WHICH games can be played offline, using jargon like "any"

Pretty much the same here with the caveat that activision could have implemented online-only on their lonesome by the looks of the retail box backs. Still, interesting.

Why would Activision implement it on the X1 but not the PS4 version, though?

So the options that seem most likely is that the patch he got did not fully remove the DRM option and that the 24 hour check is still active on his system. Since he cannot currently go online thanks to his ban, it's effectively a non-check in.

I am going with this for now because it's the only thing that makes sense for me
But the 180 was decided months ago. Not sure why it would be on retail units built (I presume) afterwards.

I would agree with this. We'll see what happens come the 22nd, or a few day sooner. I'm pretty sure all will be fine on the launch date.

I agree with this. It is very tricky, indeed. What's weird is that he can't even access system settings.

They should clarify it I guess but i mean there could be many reasons. They could even be blocking him from getting online for the updates because they are still being tested I mean what would happen if any of the updates had a major problem and say bricked his console that would cause an even bigger shit storm considering there would be no support right now.I wonder if the patch he has in incomplete or missing parts that are blocking him from accessing the settings. If they have been rolling out all the patches like the AMA guy is saying then something may not be final.

I thought removing the 24 hour check-in feature would have been one of the first patches they worked on tbh

Must be nearly ready to go live you would think!

They cant even keep a customer who bought their new console happy for an entire day without doing everything they can to ruin his experience with the Xbox brand.

Its amazing how fucking bad they seem to be at everything now.

The update the dude probably got was a verification update of sorts... probably intended to verify that the update service was working with retail units... the final patch will probably go live a few days before the system launch

I do find it unlikely, though there may be a game by game basis thing for the original DRM that turned off offline functionality. There may be a day 1 patch.

This kinda mentions that games will need to be patched before they can go offline.

Of course this is all speculation.

I call bullshit on that, why would retail units have access to the nightly builds of the Firmware?
Probably because they have all current systems on that update channel. If there are tons being tested in the wild they may not have an easy way of identifying those that shouldn't be on this channel except on a case-by-case basis. Nobody is supposed to have it yet.

I mean, they probably have a way, but maybe they didn't feel the need. It was said the updates were RTM, which means even if they are daily they have been tested and are not unstable.

Sounds like he got a non 180 patch and hit the 24hr check in closing the system down on him.

Wow I can't believe some people actually wanted this and MS wanted to push this shot. Imagine had it gone through. What a pile of shit. This is the reason I will never ever buy an xbox one, 180 or not.

I imagine it was useful to keep the DRM on for pre-release purposes, going down literally day one of launch anyway, that way they can ensure only the press and others given the privilege are on and anyone else gets punted until it's time.

May validate the idea they can reimplement it, although unless every disc has a unique ID "just in case" it'd probably just be a dick move with no benefits. And it can be useful to keep those IDs actually for reasons other than always online DRM, like paying a fee to get the downloadable version then marking that disc as illegible for future DD unlocks similar to UMDs in Japan.

Couldn't be me. He just blew 500 bucks for a DVD player if it will even allow him to play DVDs. It appears all retail xbones are coming with drm packed in so their was no way he could get around it I guess.

Juniors with persecution complexes rarely graduate to full membership on NeoGAF.

As for the topic at hand, I think we're missing too much information to do anything other than speculate. We'll find out soon though.

The whole "Offline Play Enabled" bit on the back of the PS4 case is interesting though.

He paid $500, got to try the system early, got a $100 target gift card, and gets invited to the MS launch event and who knows what other goodies he'll get and still gets the system unlocked on day 1. Yeah I don't really feel sorry for him.

Moonlightswami is exercising restraint and perspective.
Anyone hassling him over Twitter has misplaced priorities.

He knew what he was getting himself into when he wound up with the console early and decided to broadcast it to a mass audience.
And he scored a $100 Target gift card for his troubles.
Even with the 24-hour check-in still being enforced it's a pretty sweet deal.

Oh yeah, it's so horrible that someone can't play their mostly online-based console before the actual release date because he got it due to a shipping error. Microsoft's just causing all sorts of problems these days!

So either..

1. Didn't get final update
2. XBL bans now cover both digital and "physical" games
3. Activision for some strange reason has offline play for PS4 but not X1

Gonna go with 1 or possibly 3. I find it weird MS employees would be home testing the system with DRM still activated though.

the thing is, how is anyone going to find this out even after launch? Most people will have already had broadband installed and already downloaded the patch. Unless someone deliberately removes the broadband for a day, no one will be any the wiser.

The system goes live on November 22nd. You have to download a patch before it works. If these problems are still present then, yeah, go crazy and I'll join in. But the speculation in here is tin foil hat stuff

Well from the sound of it they are unbanning him... yes it sucks it doesn't work now... but come launch he wont have an issue.

In the end people are dog piling MS even though it was all targets fault.

XBL isn't ready, so the best decision is to restrict his access but as a negative the launch patch wasn't live yet for retail so he's seeing the effect of that.

If it couldn't connect to XBL in the first place, this thread wouldn't exist as hed just be stuck waiting for the patch.

Such a weird thing to put on the back of the box.

I noticed that too. I get COD and it's mostly played online but this like they're trying to tell you SP is extra. Let's wait and see if this becomes a trend for the industry. Right now my ears/eyes are perked up.

I'm gonna go with 2. He can't even access his settings, so it sounds like the ban essentially bricked the console.

Some stuff from him.

People should read this before jumping to conclusions. This could simply be a full console ban and may have nothing to do with COD per se. Let's sit tight until we get more info.

I love that fact sheet. "You don't need to be online to play your Xbox One and games offline! You just need to go online with your Xbox One and games first before you can use them".
