Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

Joystiq and Polygon .. working together to poo-poo the PS4 launch .. :)

It's interesting that both of these sites are the one's that also proposed that there is little difference between 1080p and 720p and that resolutiongate is a pointless affair.

Hearing that the more open level design quickly regresses is probably the biggest disappointment for me. I've always felt Killzone, as a series, really isn't all that great (I don't think Killzone 2 is a good shooter at all, but Mercenaries does some great stuff), but the wider play space and open level structure had me more excited than I would be for a Killzone game.

Yeah, that's my primary negative takeaway from this - it's too bad that the experience regresses into standard level- and encounter-design fare. I've always thought that Crysis 1 was a great, great vision that other linear shooters should be inspired from, but alas...

Meanwhile I expected the handling and treatment of the game's theme to be primitive at best, so that's okay by me.

Were all these surprised people seeing something different in those videos than me?

One thing is to want a PS4 day one (like me)

another is justify the purchase of a not so great game, just because you had to have something to play

there cant be two Gafs, the one that is overanalitical in every kind of game media that comes out and the other that whistles to the wind when preorders were made to launch games

It's reviewing around Crysis 3 which I enjoyed, and which this sort of reminded me of. Unopened copy of the game.... NOT GOING BACK TO THE STORE!

Huzzah and all that.

Judging by all these reactions I'd say polygon is using gaf perfectly.

Decent scores I expected 8/10s can't wait to get my copy.

I genuinely feel sorry for people who make purchasing decisions based on what Arthur Gies says about it.

+1

and I fear that psychology plays its evil part here as well with people fixiating on the lowest score and pondering about it more than actually needed (in Polygon's case any second is a waste)

So I guess Polygon prefers Call of Duty Ghosts to Killzone?

Or do they follow the "different reviewers different scores you cannot compare them" moto???

Honestly, the guys at Polygon are smart. They know what they are doing.

I thought you were probably overreacting, then I read his review, what a joke.

To sum it up:

Hey guys, remember how Killzone sucks?
The story is good, but I couldn't get into it.
I'm not very good at the game.
I'm an MS fanboy
5/10.

Fixed it for you.

That absence of meaningful evolution might be Killzone: Shadow Fall’s biggest sin. For all the next-gen bluster of its visuals and the repeated blunt-force attempts to ram a message home, Guerilla’s first shot on the PS4 retreads shooter cliches, and poorly. In a launch lineup crowded with shooters, Killzone: Shadow Fall sits at the bottom.

Does COD innovate in any area? Polygon is a joke.

Polygon conspiracies?

Shit I have the game and im not going there. Most outlets gave it a 7, polygon justnusesmthe whole scale 1-10. Looks like its just mediocre.

The site was literally funded by Microsoft, no one really takes Polygon, and specifically Artur Gies seriously.

It's a joke right?

I only care about multiplayer when it comes to Killzone SF. And since you americans can try that for a week before I can your impressions will decide if I even try to get a console at launch.

Because perhaps Ghosts is a more fun MP?

I don't get why it possibly cannot be lower then Ghosts lol.

Perhaps the game is just not that great. Graphically it looks pretty, but graphics aren't everything.
What? they couldn't even review KZ SF mp properly

This was to be expected, Killzone games are average shooters wrapped in great visuals. I'm people that enjoy this franchise will still like it. I bought simply as a showcase game and I think that's fine.
Yep, Sony should have dropped Killzone and kept Resistance going. Even if it meant giving it to another developer (who can actually make a game unlike nihilistic).

So you are ignoring all the other reviews?

So mostly 7 to 9 reviews is bad now?

It is when Killzone, the only major launch exclusive, was seen as the "next big evolution" in the series, and a major improvement over the last ones. And it's getting mediocre reviews. Not a good start.

GT gave the game an 8.8.

Now THAT sounds like a more realistic score.

Edit: People seem a little on edge today for some reason, so let me rephrase that.

GT gave the game an 8.8

In my opinion, that sounds like a more realistic score, because that's what I expect out of a Killzone game.

Is that better now?

Well, Polygon is doing something right, as far as promoting their own site is concerned.

They've managed to be the most talked about site in the past couple of days, probably gained a massive amount of clicks, and even in this thread, while the game scores an average of 7-8 by looking at the merged OPs, many comments focus on the polygon 5/10 one as if that's the average the game is scoring.

They are proving that there's no bad publicity I guess?

Will work great in the long run.

Also Polygon need the drop their bullshit and stop making their review look like a HTML 5 tutorial. More qulaity content and less flsh please.

I'm starting to wonder if the guy just does it to fuck with GAF and play the beaten dog on twitter afterwards. :p

The Polygon and Eurogamer scores are about what I expected. An Edge 6 is right around the corner, surely. Sony needs to stop funding Guerilla's tripe.

Basically asking for people to lose their jobs is going a little to far don't you think?

Kind of a shame that the levels seem to get smaller according to that eg review.

Mercenary was pretty freaking awesome.

Reading the Eurogamer review, kind of disappointed yet not surprised that the previews were mostly bullshit regarding its open-ness - I was led to believe that the game was more along the lines of Crysis than a corridor shooter. Not usually one to put much stock in reviews but out of all the PS4 launch games I was only interested in this one, and only because I really love 'semi-open' gameplay in my FPSes. Review makes it sound like that's only one portion of the game, not exactly compelling me to go out and blow 400+60 bucks to play it.

Gies should never be allowed near the review process for a Sony product...its not even funny to laugh at him anymore...he just tries SO HARD

Killzone games have never really scored very well. But I've enjoyed every single one of them. The secret to enjoying killzone (for me anyway) is ramping up the difficulty. It totally transforms the single player.

Can't wait to play this based on these scores.

I guess average reviews should be expected for launch titles the majority of the time, but I am still very excited to get this.

i know this isnt the right thread, but is madden ps4 still under embargo or something? i really need to see some reviews on that game.

I am with you about Madden and even NBA Live; I need scores.

Exactly! I'm going back to the OP and then to the comments again, and it's like two different realities.

The game is getting 7-9 from big sites, and most comments sound like "oh well, crappy franchise, expected it to be a failure, ouch".. what?

Are we seeing review event kick back, they all seemed salty as fuck having to go to an event to review these games. Some of the shit you could say about every single fps that ever comes to market, saying i was bored of killing stabbing things in an fucking FIRST PERSON SHOOTER come on sooooooooooon.

Just reminds me how my thoughts and purchases are never on the same level as these "reviewers".

Sounds like a lot of nitpicking and genuine frustrating of not liking the series.

I await the 9's from the X1 titles.

These don't seem outside normal Killzone scores, I could see it slipping as low as a 5 being a generic shooter and I could see very specific people inflating it into the 9s. I'd imagine your mileage would be based on how much you liked the previous entries.

I feel like Guerrilla Games need to be allowed to let their creative juices flow more. Their ability to create visually stunning games is some of the best in the business, but as a series Killzone has been riddled with mediocrity throughout. Would love to see them do something different next.

It doesn't matter what COD or battlefield 4 because almost 100% of people buy those games for thier multiplayer (which lets face it, you can't trust a reviewer to review)

You guys gotta realize your the less than 1% that buys FPS games for the campaign. And I really don't understand why?

It doesn't have to. Hate to say it, but pretty much up until this point Activision could get away with it and had the perfect formula for MP first person shooters. People can deny it all they want, but COD is fun and people show it with their wallets.

Reading bits of the reviews and it seems to be about what I expected. I wasnt expecting anything groundbreaking(not for a launch title) and the Killzone series in general has been largely cliched so no surprise there. Still looking forward to the game but I have a feeling it will be my Resistance. Enjoyable for a launch game but will no doubt be overshadowed by the sequel or later games.

People complain when sites give a game a low score and when sites give a game a high score as well. It's either money hats or low balling.

Especially when most people here haven't even played it.
