Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

The problem is that is just because they are launch titles....

Yes, and I hope everybody continues to be critical is what I am saying :)

What the....

Standards for what is deemed as the highest quality of the video games medium are pretty damn low, in my opinion. There's a huge lack of basic expectations, analysis, reflection, and criticism in both review and consumer culture.

Dat American biased! How on earth did COD ghost get higher score than this? Well I know, its because is made by an American companies and reviews by Americans gaming so-called journalists who couldn't differentiate between a 720P and a 1080P version of the same game.

I respect other peoples reviews/opinions, but why this kotaku guy gets to review the game when obviously he doesn't like anything about the killzone series or cares about it http://kotaku.com/there-s-a-small-chance-i-could-care-about-killzone-sha-514132084 or lolgies who hates the series. I agree that the game is a love it or hate it game and that the story isn't that good, but Cod got a NOT YET and kz got a NO. Different reviewers i know but still a joke since cod is doing the same thing from last year.

The same thing as last year in Ghosts (or worse, because actually Blops2 was pretty good all around and even had some interesting story paths in the campaign depending on your actions) may still be better than KZ4. Obviously can't comment on the accuracy of that because I haven't played it, but neither have you. They have.

I'm watching the streams and I honestly don't see how a game like this would get a 5 or a "Don't buy".

Nothing seems broken, gameplay is solid, multiplayer seems decent. You'd think a game would be just terrible/broken with those reviews.

Americans are the least biased people out there when it comes to who makes what games or consoles. See: the 80's, 90's, PS4, etc.

Wow, so I made a comment on the polygon review in response to Crusina_Luachra's comment pointing out that while the official PSM UK scored it an 8, that's pretty close to the metacritic average. PSM UK is also below average compared to all critics for all titles. I pointed out that the killzone review and the last of us review are a full 2.0 points below metacritic average, which is somewhat of a trend for 1st party sony titles on polygon, and that as a result, it may not be the best place to come to the get the definitive opinion. My comment was removed.

Arthur Gies made a bet with a GAFer. He lost the bet. He then never returned to GAF and never paid up.

Evilore also called him officially the most untrustworthy person in the games industry or some thing like that after one particular incident involving Notch.

Oh shit, I never knew about this. Not to go too off topic but what was it?

For those who really believe that Killzone generally has had mediocre gameplay I'd love to hear from you, which FPS has better game play and why (including multiplayer).

For the record, I'm not a strict Killzone fan, and I've had many favorites offers the years, specifics over there years from particular games in these series: Killzone, Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and F.E.A.R.

Fair to an extent (if kind of elitist). But why do you believe this is it the moment of change?

Please tell me this is sarcasm.

Somehow I doubt that is worst than Ghosts.

I have a hard time believing the single player is worse as well, but I can definitely see the multiplayer being worse. I'm completely sick of CoD multiplayer in general, but it's still a pretty strong foundation that would be a lot of fun if I hadn't played it so much over the past 6 years. KZ2 was decent, but never quite felt right, or balanced.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
Some of these reviews don't seem to be even in the same universe. Compare the Gametrailers review (one of the very few to spend more than a few seconds talking about the MP, if at all) with either the Kotaku or Polygon reviews. It almost seems like one review was made objectively, and the others had a decision and score already made up before the game was played.

Haha :) That's not what I intended to state. There's no inductive evidence that it will stick nor is there any reason to believe this is a moment of change - my point was that I just hope reviewers will be consistent in their expectations and standards of new experiences. This allows me to take away something positive away from this topic of plastering a game for being formulaic despite the fact that many, many other games commit to the very same tired design principles without being called out on it by the mainstream review media.

Wow who freaking f*cking cares? Odd reviews shows different taste that's all. IGN loves money and MS and at an 8 that's pretty good. Especially if you're a fan. I don't rely on outspoken journalism that's this biased.

I want this game, just what's up with review garbage?

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

Decided to switch my digital preorder to ACIV after reading Killzone reviews. Not so much that I think it's not worth the money, but I tend to prefer shooters on my PC anyway. Was leaning towards it and the reviews sort of sealed it for me.

The difference is Killzone's multiplayer is considerably better than Crysis'. Problem is, journalists barely spend any time with it nor give it much thought in the overall reviews for these games.

This is an issue of Killzone's lack of prestige too. When this game was revealed in February I said that it shouldn't have carried the Killzone title. Guerilla should make another first person shooter, but I would never green light another Killzone title if I were Sony. Dollars to donuts says that this game would have scored in the 9s if this wasn't a Killzone title.

Oh shit, I never knew about this. Not to go too off topic but what was it?

Here is the recap from Evilore himself:

Recap: in the wake of the IGDA party dancer scandal, unsubstantiated Twitter rumors surface about women being paid to be in the VIP room of a Mojang party, apparently too attractive and numerous to possibly be there of their own volition (sexism much?). Mojang flatly deny claim and the source of the rumors is rooted out, essentially a game of Twitter Telephone, but a delusional feminist extremist crusader decrees that Notch is still at fault for people thinking that they were paid for even if they weren't, and that he should take some sort of action in reparation. Arthur Gies takes her side and promotes her on Twitter.

The OP is permed for going on a witch hunt (in conjunction with insane extremist posts afterwards) and refusing to update his thread after the attempt at scandal fell apart. Libelous, agenda-driven bullshit.

Arthur Gies is officially the most disreputable person in the enthusiast press.

Anyone - and I do mean anyone who listens to anything that blithering idiot Arthur Gies says about any subject has no credibility.

Killzone may be tripe, but nobody will think that due to Arthur Gies stamp of approval, that's for DAMN sure.

I'm thinking of doing the same. Dammit. I enjoyed all the previous KZ games too.

Haven't played crysis 3 multi but crysis 2 was super fun and balanced.
Crysis 2 also had better campaign than killzone 3

Killzone's gameplay is let down by its core mechanics, IMO. I can't speak to whether the trend continues with SF, but with the PS3 Killzone games, the way that the aiming accelerates based on how far you have the thumbstick pushed seemed really out of whack. Pretty much every other major PS3 shooter did a decent job with this (not just BF3 & CoD, but even the Uncharted series), so it felt off. Additionally, in multiplayer everyone is a bullet sponge, and it's made to seem even worse because in KZ2 & 3 the game took far too long to actually register that you had made a kill.

Additionally, the multiplayer has a lot of classes, and they could potentially have a lot of synergy if people would only work together. But, as was often the case with PS3 multiplayer, no one would use voice comm and there'd be no coordination -- something which is all the more important in a class-based game. There were also lots of weird engagements in choke points on certain maps.

There are some cool ideas in the series, but it seems like Guerilla never quite executes them right.

I disagree on both fronts, but opinions and all that. I actually believe KZ2's multiplayer was among the best ever conceived in a fps, second only to Counter Strike Source for me. I doubt anything will ever top CSS, but KZ2 certainly got close for being a console game.

Let's wait and see the xbone scores there fella before we over-react.

I'm not interested in comparisons. I don't give two squirts of piss about XBone scores. They could all score straight 10s and I wouldn't care. PS4 is my console of choice this gen and I only care what Sony is doing.

As great as the software lineup has been on PS3 this year, its at the opposite end of the spectrum on the PS4 launch.

Infamous - delayed
Driveclub - delayed
Knack - who gave this the green light?
Killzone - ho hum...but its pretty to look at in 1080p and 60fps

Haha. Scores are hilarious. Most pitiful dual console launches ever?

I kept telling everyone to get a Wii U this Christmas but nobody listened to me!

Get the Wii U now. Get the PS4 in a few months or whenever you have the money down the line.

You'll avoid:

● Launch Software Issues (Glitches, Freezing OS, slowdown, etc)
● Launch Hardware Issues (Overheating, RROD, etc)
● Launch Window Games Issues (Rushed, feature/content deprived, limited selection)
● "Features not ready at launch" (Kinect voice commands, PS4 bluetooth peripherals issues, etc)

You'll be able to:

● Read impressions from others on the hardware (does it work as advertised? Does it do what you're hoping it does?)
● Read neoGAF on the subject of the various launch exclusives (is Knack as middling as it seems? Is Killzone really a keeper? Is Ryse going to be the next God of War?)
● Stay out of the fanboy nonsense ("I'll be sitting over here and playing Super Fucking Awesome Mario thank you very much guys.")
● Support a system that is actually doing proactive things for gamers as well (no paywalls, great indie support, interesting a novel hardcore gaming features)
● PLAY FUCKING PIKMIN 3 AND SUPER MARIO AND WONDERFUL 101 (cause seriously guys LOL at Xbox One and PS4 launch lineup exclusives compared to those three alone)

You know the answer. :)

uh the very thing I quoted in that post of yours? The polygon Sim City review fiasco? Arthus Gies bullshitting for months about Xbox One secret sauce? Arthur Gies making a bet with a GAFer, losing, and then never paying up and never returning to GAF? Arthur Gies literally spreading FUD and factual bullshit almost every day this year?

Do I need to continue or do you just want me to read him the riot act now?

I don't even care about his Killzone review since I read nothing of his anymore. I was simply demonstrating why that is. He is the most disreputable person in the enthusiast press, as Evilore said

As generic as fps get at times you can never suspect a news outlet to give decent scores to the underdog game. Polygon wants that 9/10 Halo 5 review.

Lolygon giving TLOU 7.5 is more shocking to me than the Shadow Fall score.

I think reading the Eurogamer and Destructoid reviews of the game makes it sound pretty awesome and between this and Battlefield I'll be more than happy for a couple of months at least

And it was still better than Killzone 3

Well, I never played KZ3 outside the demo. But I probably liked the little I played more than Crysis 2. That game was utterly forgetable in a qualitative sense. Sadly, I still remembered it, so maybe it was worse than that...

Wow, the scores really do mirror each other though.

Sorry, I was half asleep and didn't even see what you had quoted. I see now. I don't think I completely understand since EvilLore's post isn't in very clear prose, but I wonder how this person still has a job.

i am with you on that. i even stated that killzone 2 is among best fps current gen.

Point i was making that. Both killzone 2 and Crysis were loved by critics and gamers.
Killzone 3 and crysis 2 had mixed reception. crysis 3 was mostly disliked by both critics and gamers. and now KZ:sf is hated by critics lets see how gamers respong but both are on downward trajectory

I played through KZ3 co-op locally and it was still boring as hell. That is how poor the campaign was. Combat encounters were much, much, much less exciting no matter what was happening. The multiplayer was some kind of bizarre back track, abandoning the unique feel 2 had almost entirely while having hilariously worse map design all around. Crysis 2's multiplayer was Call of Duty with super powers.
