PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

Trying to boot it into safe mode was one of the last things I tried and still got nothing. The piece of metal on the right might just be the culprit, I don't know. It is a piece of metal that's kinda just sitting there. To think that's all that's keeping me from enjoying my PS4 is very...frustrating.

So try bending it down and let us know what happens!

I'm almost at the end of my rope here. Not quite, but almost. I've literally been trying all day to get my PS4 to do something, ANYTHING, and it just won't. When I try to turn it on all I get is the flashing blue light and a black screen. Here's the HDMI output on the back of the PS4. Can anyone who's more knowledgeable about this stuff tell me if there's anything suspect about the way it looks? The HDMI does feel "loose" when I plug it in.

Reposting, again:

If you can't get the PS4 to boot into safe mode (hold down power for 10 sec and wait till you get the double beeps), it's not your HDMI port. it's an internal issue and they request you send it back to them to be fixed.

If your console light turns white (and don't stay at pulsating blue), it can be that HDMI cable or connection issue. Fix with a pin.

If it stays blue and pulsates, try safe mode. From here they can help you troubleshoot if you wanted to call in. If it wont boot to safe mode, gotta send it in. basically, does it double beep?

Couldn't that piece be bent down with a small tool?

Any suggestions on what he should use? I can only think of a sewing needle that is that small and possibly hard enough to bend little tab down. Also an issue of trying to see into that port when trying to do it without stabbing or bending the pins on the output stub.

A colleague of mine in the office picked his up at lunch and tried to set it up at work on one of our TVs - no luck. It's not the bent HDMI thing either. It is giving a red light. He's taking it back, but...that really blows. He was excited to sneak away at work and play.

hmm from what I see, this could be a clusterfuck of a launch...

do you guys also collect the serial numbers of the defective units?
could help in order to point towards bad baches, ex. like those with the faulty hdmi plug.

if the TV isn't getting any signal from the PS4, how would one know whether or not safe mode is working?

Needle nose pliers?

Also, for those with the pulsating blue light, have you tried removing the HDD and putting it back in?

that means the little motor in the drive that spins to pull a disc in and out is messed up. the mechanisms inside the drive that actually read/spin/access disks should be okay though.

get it replaced if you want.

Thank you. Seems I have a few months where I can return it to Amazon.
Think I'll enjoy it for a while first.
Appreciate the answers.

Could somebody circle the problem with HDMI port on that picture please. For clarification.

I keep forgetting to try this in all my anger between phone calls to Amazon and Sony. Will try and report back.

Whelp, my PS4 is going back to Amazon for a refund along with the games I've already opened. I'm not gonna wait a month for Sony to send me a refurb unit. Only downside is that I bought the system with gift cards, so I now have like $500 in gift credit.

How long does it take to sign into your PSN account on the initial set? I already installed a game and all that so I know the system is fine but I've been trying to sign in forever. I even downloaded the firmware so I know everything is good.

the system double beeps.

a working system will beep twice and will enter safe mode.
if you hold it down for awhile and literally nothing happens, it's an internal issue and the system simply won't boot, no matter what your connection is.

i'm suggesting if you don't get an output signal, at least test to see if you can hear it entering safe mode. if it does, then you know it's a cable or 'bent port' issue.

edit:

yea, there's a bulge on the side. it's all, bulgey-like.

don't send it to Amazon. call sony and get them to replace it since it's under warranty, and that's a defect. Amazon could try and blame you for this... who knows.

if you look to the left side, you see the other one, but it's laying flat like it's supposed to.

That's my problem too (regarding gift cards). I complained I purchased the gift cards for the reason of buying the system and they said they will talk once they receive the item back to them and hopefully I can get them to credit a credit card....

okay cool. thanks! im immediately replacing my HDD tonight so i will need to load safe mode from the get go.

also: didn't someone fix their 'no safe mode' issue by doing the remove-hdd-then-power-on fix?

With the # of people in this thread alone with the same issues, I cannot see them not accepting it. It is Amazon you know? Sony is 2-3 weeks away from getting the consoles back to us. We can find a console somewhere in that time probably. I did at Costco today.

nah, Amazon is pretty generous with returns especially for defective hardware. He should have no issues making a return if he want his money back. I'm sure he won't be the first who's already filed a return with them.

I called Sony hours ago and was on hold for almost an hour before I gave up. Safe mode doesn't work either. I've already made plans to return it but I won't be able to get another one until they get more stock. I want to try and fix it because I took the weekend off just so I could play it. This sucks.

I tried the hard drive removal trick. Didn't work for me. I played around with it for a few hours before I heard from Sony the issue and test I was describing above. They are aware of some booting ... internal problems.

sorry to hear about the problems, kinda, makes me chuckle also. they'll never really master these high tech compact boxes, at least the new xbox comes with a bloody fan on the heatsink this time and not 6 years after launch i guess. sure the 'dirty' pirate enthusiasts capable of reverse engineering stuff like this will find a fix before sony, so if it were me i'd be keeping my eyes on those places.

Hmm really? Strange. I'm pretty sure both of mine looked like the red one. I didn't have a big piece sticking up like that green one.

I appear to have a DOA unit, can't get it to output a video signal at all after 20 minutes of trying now. Switched HDMI ports, used different HDMI cord, rebooted console, etc.

Purchased from: Amazon
Firmware: standard/bundled one
A/V setup: Samsung LN40A650 TV, trying to output in 1080p
Never got any video signal at all, can't hear audio

Console has a tiny bit of raised metal in the the HDMI port exactly like the photos being posted here, I'm guessing that's what is causing it. Gonna try all the troubleshooting steps (removing the HDD etc) after I eat dinner, hopefully something will work.

So, to further troubleshoot the problem I unplugged all the cables and then plugged the power cable back on. For about 60 seconds it the blue light pulsated then I could hear the fan kick on. Plugged in the HDMI cable, and no video. Can't power it off either.
