Anandtech mini review:

AnandTech said:
Unlike the PS4, the Xbox One does not support HDMI-CEC, relying instead exclusively on IR blasting to turn on your TV and cable box (if applicable).

o_O

That's weird for a media box...

Aside from the fact that it is a humour piece, it is actually saying who the box might appeal to, not that everyone owing it is that way. But whatevs, its really not worth parsing.

We'll have to agree to disagree...to me it's clear and full of condescension...calling anyone who has interest in the box, lazy, to dumb to know what to do with their money etc.

The whole "Redbox by Verizon" thing is ridiculous. I feel dirty just typing it out

Shit is GROSS. Honestly don't see the point in forcing users to do this, they'll just say "Redbox" a few times until they learn what they have to say, then they'll just say fuck it I'm not jumping through that hoop every time, and be that much more soured on kinect functionality. The voice command stuff seems really strange at this point.

Anand's write up really blows all other technical review sites "reviews" out of the water at this point. It's the most complete article from a strictly technical perspective at this point.

It is the only great summary of the XBO's technology that I have read. Good stuff. AnandTech puts gaming journalists to shame.

This is a fair post...again, if I were outside of the US I'm not sure I'd be getting XOne...the media stuff to me is a big deal. Without that all you have is a less powerful gaming box.
Yeah, if I had an Xbox One right now, it'd be pretty hollow compared to the US users. I'd be missing one of the large selling points of the machine that seems to be a core part of it. I'd be getting a piece of the overall console but still pay a similar price.

On another note, I'm wondering how many outside of places like NeoGaf and so on knows about the changes made to the Xbox One. This is just going by my experience, but when I was at the gym a week ago I was talking to a few guys I know and all seemed to be set on the PS4.

But what got my attention was that none of them realised the policy changes. They still thought the whole shared games and check in stuff was there. And they aren't completely clueless when it comes to gaming, they just don't keep up to date which I'd presume is the way most are like. It seems like the negative aspects were was picked up more by word of mouth and just never corrected?

I'm just wondering if MS did enough to advertise the policy changes to the mass public or did they try to ignore it.

Though I can only see that possibly hurting very early sales and no more.

Clearly it's not done cooking. Looks like my decision to wait was the right one.

Its a clever new ad platform that uses word association. Now anytime you use Redbox you're also thinking of Verizon! Eventually, we'll see others like "Flipboard by Motrin IB" and "Gametrailers by Doritos"

Trying to. It's not working.

Good reviews! No wonder there is so much excitement around the system. Friday can not come soon enough!

"It's not working" is what I got from most of the reviews. You are grossly over exaggerating the excitement surrounding the xb1 as well.

First tragedy, then farce.
Looking pretty good on reviews for the UI stuff. Looking forward to getting my hands on this guy on Friday.

So salty.

It sounds like the HDMI-in on the Xbox One doesn't have a pure passthrough mode. Forgive me if that has been answered, but if I hooked up a cable box to the XBO, does the XBO have to be on for me to watch cable through it? Or can it pass through the signal in standby mode? My receiver right now doesn't even have to be on, it can just pass through the signal from one of the inputs without any bother.

I definitely could be wrong, but that's what I was told.

Most devices worth their salt that have a passthrough now basically kill it dead. Receivers/cap cards and the like. It's a fairly recent development though.

I think it has to be on.

See, I find this to be true...in MY OPINION...(for what it's worth)...PS4 did nothing innovative...they refreshed hardware and put in much better memory and GPU etc. They didn't push the envelope in ANY way shape or form. And that's fine, clearly Sony is positioning the box as pretty much 90% games and 10% everything else.

XOne is going after input one...has that vision been realized out of the gate, NO! Resounding NO! But again, in my opinion they are pushing the envelope much harder with multiple ways to interact with the device, be an all in one entertainment hub. I understand that on a gaming site like this that may not be a priority for all but to me it makes a world of difference. I want all of that all-in- one functionality even if others here profess not to want it...doesn't mean none of us want it.

Just but whatever meets your needs...you don't see me going into the PS4 review thread and shitting it up with things like lolygon and claims of bias. I understand different folks want different things...just get what makes you happy.

So much this!

I'm on this site every.single.day! I don't feel the need to shit on other peoples choices. To each his own.

The PS4 is awesome. We get it. But not everyone is enamored with what it's offering and there's qute a few who like what the opposition is putting forth. Why is that so hard for so many to understand.

I like the Xbox One vision... but it looks like a hot mess right now

I won't be buying either console in the near future.

XBone doesn't look anything like a VCR. I grew up with VCRs, I know what they look like. And I'm not a console warrior because I have no interest in any of these consoles.

But I know bad design when I see it and PS4 is bad design.

This has potential to become a new meme on GAF, nearly on the level of "I don't know what you know about Japan (I'm an expert)...".

In my opinion the PS4 is awesome at cranking out graphics...honestly not much else appeals to me...that's fine though. I understand that many WANT this and I bless them. I want an all-in-one media hub...YES, even including TV.

There are also numerous innaccuracies in these reviews, which is why you don't use mainstream press as a source of success either.

Yup. You base the success off of consumer feedback, sales, and overall mindshare and not from sites reporting inaccuracies.

Exactly. These sites are currently lying in order to make Xbox One appealing. Once people buy this console, they'll feel cheated for listening to them.

This voice command stuff is garbage, how did no one know this stuff before launch day?

Lolygon review:

Kinect demands full names of movies and games to start them, so you'd better get used to saying "Ryse: Son of Rome" instead of "Ryse."

Just, no. I'm not saying "Xbox play Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag" every time. Why did they think people would be ok with this?

Also from their review:

The good news? Issues aside, it really works.

That sentence just makes me laugh.

#teamplaystation #thatavatar...That box could turn water into wine and somehow I doubt your opinion would change.

Ohh it would change. Ive allways liked the xbox brand.

And as for the avatar, its just a picture. Nothing else to it lol.

Im getting the xb1 at xmas also. No fanboy here.

Cut this shit out, guys. It's a console, not a political party for crying out loud. Don't fall down this rabbit hole. :-

Agreed...I'm just saying when you provide no substance to why you think something and just say not looking hot. I hope there is no intent to be taken seriously.

I'll move along!

I'm not cool with that...but IMO stuff like this can be improved. If the box can understand the full command, there is no reason it can't understand Xbox, play Ryse!

The fact that you have to know the commands it's exactly why it fails.

It's voice control which requires you to use specific commands. MS never claimed natural voice recognition like Siri or Google Now.

The ideal way to use the system is a mix of commands and controller.

Also, someone pointed out before, one big issue is people saying things in one word, you have to have a pause after Xbox (just like if you have Google Now you have to pause after saying "Ok Google") and then say the command.

Saying the whole thing should be scrapped is ridiculous.

What helps me sleep at night is playing the great games on both my Xbox One, and my PS4 (soon) while Jr's and others here spend more time trying to #saltup Xbox One threads then using their system of choice.

What does being a jr have to do with anything? If you don't like what you're seeing go browse the official xbox forums. Some of you appear to be going in to full on defense mode.

No...it doesn't.

I don't understand what you mean. Are you saying I'm wrong? 'Cause I'm just going by what The Verge wrote:

There are two distinct ways the Kinect fails, and the first feels inexcusable. Many of the voice commands are extremely rigid, to the point where you need to memorize a list of exact phrases to be able to use them reliably. If you want to go to an app, for instance, you need to start by saying "Xbox go to." But if you want to go to Bing, that structure doesn't work. The correct command is "Xbox Bing," because Microsoft expects you to unquestionably understand and accept that "Bing" should be a verb. If "Xbox on" turns on the console, why doesn't "Xbox off" turn it off? Because "Xbox turn off" is the proper command, and you’ll need to memorize it. If you’re a Redbox Instant subscriber, get used to calling it "Redbox Instant by Verizon," because the Kinect won’t accept anything less. You can't say "Xbox play Forza," you have to say "play Forza Motorsport 5." There are dozens more examples like these.

You are wrong in saying the whole thing should be scrapped/killed with fire. I have never had 100% success with any voice recognition apps I have used, Siri, Google Now. To say, it all should be done away with makes no sense.

Exactly, its how the system will differentiate if you are using Xbox conversationally while talking to someone, and actually issuing a command. Otherwise the Xbox will attempt to do something each and everytime you say xbox.

Maybe not directly, but certainly the implication was there. They've talked time and time again about how powerful and next gen the new Kinect is, how it is the future. That plus the infinite power of the cloud makes you think it's going to work at least as well as stuff that's been out for years already.

If it doesn't I think it's a non starter in a casual household. People nowadays don't have the patience to learn commands for something like this. They just can't be bothered. If Kinect never evolves to function with natural language then I honestly don't see the point in voice commands.

Not to mention that you can scrap it by unplugging your Kinect and ignoring it if you want.
