PS4 HDD speed test thread (HDD/SSHD/SSD/STD)

Alright, fuck it. I'm going all in with the Samsung EVO SSD.

Problem is, I've got stuff saved on my PS4 drive currently. What's the best way to clone or copy that stuff off the drive so that when I swap the SSD in, its like nothing changed.

There are ways to do it, but will be a complete pain, inc using cloning software + connecting both drives to the PC.

I would recommend you just back up your saves, instructed here: https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5107

Then re-download any digital games etc (fresh install)
I need help Gaf. The Seage Hybrid drive I bought arrived today and I put it in the console, but when I boot it, it goes straight to Safe mode asking me to update the FW to 1.51

I've tried updating both from the Internet and from a USB stick but it says an error occured. Can anyone who did this procedure help me please? EU PS4 here by the way.

Are you sure you are trying to reinstall the software using the instructions here: http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps4/new-install/#installationSteps

Reinitialize PS4 software, The USB is Formatted in fat32, has a folder named "PS4" then "UPDATE" and are using the 800mb+ File? not the 300mb update (I had to re-format my USB drive in Fat32, even tho I was sure it already was, worked fine 2nd time)

Umm the update file I've download is just 300mb and that's the only one available. Where can I get the 800mb one?

Yeah, im using a Seagate momentus XT Hybrid 8GB SSD/7200RPM Physical.

800MB file is in the above post :)

Thanks a lot but umm, where did you get the link from? I've been searching and searching and the only update file I could fine on playstation.com is the 300 mb one :/

Is there ANY instructions of HD transfer info? I've asked this a few times in this thread, I've decided to use the stock HD for the time being until the SSD prices drop to something affordable for 1TB.

There are none other than back up your saves to the Cloud or USB.
Everything else you need to redownload.

What are you looking for that isn't covered by the instructions I linked to 6 posts earlier? Backup to USB or cloud, swap the drives, and restore. Seems pretty straightforward.

How do you guys feel about ordering HDD's online? Is there a bigger chance of getting one DOA since AFAIK hard drives can be a bit sensitive to rough handling (correct me if I'm wrong).

Just that the supply is a bit limited where I live (we have the Seagate SSHD but I'm not sure if I should wait for better ones) and I'm thinking about ordering one from Ebay etc..

I've been buying drives online for like, 10 years now at least. I'd say aim for someone/somewhere reputable.

It's just that I would be probably ordering them from either UK or US or somewhere else so the distance is rather long (I live in Finland).

How are the drives built nowadays? Are the sensitive to rough handling?

Edit:
Now that I'm here, should I just get the Seagate SSHD or is there something worthwhile coming in the near future?

Look at it this way...the HDD is probably made somewhere in Asia...it has to be shipped thousands of miles to get to your brick and mortar store...by ship/air/truck....

I don't think one more trip in a shipping box is going to cause any problems

Ordered my Seagate 1TB SSHD from here. Hopefully it arrive on or before launch day next week (EU). Seems like the best compromise between space, price and speed to me anyway.

This thing is great. I don't think I've had any loading issues except NFS which is just not optimized enough since you have to load into the game and into the garage and back to map every time.

Has anyone heard word on when the WD Black SSHD's will be available for retail? They will be making 1TB / 24GB cache versions.

http://techreport.com/news/24783/wd-explains-hybrid-tech-behind-black-sshds

As far as I know they've been or will soon be shipping to OEM's. However retail has yet to be announced to my knowledge. It's a bit frustrating given they were shown off at CES almost a year ago.

Anyway, I think this or a similar unit may prove to be quite performant in a PS4.

Where's the instructions for doing the HDD replacement and boot up process?

Thanks!

1) Download the 1.51 European recovery software and put it on a fat32 formatted USB stick in /PS4/UPDATE folder

2) Slide glossy cover off PS4

3) unscrew fancy playstation branded screw, slide out HDD

4) unscrew from cradle, put new drive in, screw into cradle

5) slot HDD back in, screw in fancy playstation screw

6) put glossy cover back on

7) insert USB stick, hold down PS4 power button for over 7 seconds to boot into safe mode

8) select "Reinstall System Software”

9) install from USB stick

10) done.

Hmmm, 1TB SSHD or 720RPM HDD??

SSHD is just over £10 more expensive.

personally im going to go with a 1TB 7200rpm drive...im not sold on the idea of such small flash partitions on the SSHD drives being a real world benefit for the PS4...too much is accessed from the HDD this gen....

i think id rather have the consistent speed increase of 7200 over 5400 than hoping by chance the right files are cached on the SSHD...im really hoping that someone puts the HGST 7200rpm drive on sale black friday/cyber monday

It's what I ended up going for. It's a little cheaper and doesn't seem to be too much difference in speed. It's still faster than the stock. That'll do for me.

HDD Installed (model # & size): Seagate STBD1000400 1TB SSHD
Cost of HDD: $129
Boot from cold to menu time: 22 seconds
Boot from standby to menu time: 24 seconds
Game boot times (from XMB to menu/start, Disk/Digital):

I'm a little iffy on the boot to menu. is that when you see the menu or when it loads the menu and show stuff on it? because my times may be off and i can redo it.

EDIT: I redid the test time.

boot from cold to menu (when first icon shows): 22
boot from standby to menu (when first icon shows) 24 seconds
NFS (Digital) XMB to Press X: 33 seconds
BF4 (Physical) XMB to Press Option Button: 45 seconds
Resogun: XMB to Press X: 25 Second
AC4 (Physical) XMB to Press X: 37 Seconds

so far it's much slow: Verdict: don't buy.

I posted this in the European Waiting thread but if there is anybody from the UK waiting to grab the Seagate sshd I actually just ordered the Seagate 1tb sshd from pixmania for £77.99. Seems to be a special offer at the moment, looks like it lasts another 2 days or so.

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/2-5-inch-i...FSsKwwodBkUADA

It says 2-4 day delivery so I thought I might as well give it a go. It doesn't specifically say SEAGATE ST1000LM014 (and I'm almost certain that's the one mentioned in a few threads here and elsewhere?) but that's what I searched for to find it.

Hope that helps anybody still looking to get one before launch.

Seems to be OEM only but, these were these posted earlier. 16GB NAND version.

There was worry that special Win drivers were needed to activate the NAND portion of the drive though.

hm. not used this for long. but it seems to have started to get bogged down. i noticed that while on the XMB it froze a bit. and after that when i started to play knack. the music would cut in and out. hmm.

Wait so did I read this graph right? The Toshiba MQ01ABD100 is faster than some 7200RPM drives, and more or less not far of from some of the SSHDs?

The load times on DRIVECLUB are seriously quick, even with just the stock HDD :)

Can't wait to find out how much faster SSHD/SSD are going to be!

It's awesome you guys are keeping tabs on this thread. Have you experimented with different drives yourself? Or just stuck with stock only? As in for your personal PS4, not the dev kits obviously.
