The Hobbit trilogy - News, rumours and discussion

It's so hard going spoiler free. I shut off my surround system every time the tv commercial comes on. I've heard a few very small bites of what Smaug sounds like but nothing crazy. All I've really seen is the huge pile of gold which isn't much of a surprise heh.

Couple of interesting bits fom The Hollywood Reporter article on the premiere.

The Desolation of Smaug was enthusiastically received especially compared to the reception of the first installment, An Unexpected Journey, which, while making over a billion dollars worldwide, got a bit of a clobbering by critics and fans alike.

All press screenings will be in 24fps and Jackson says he has worked on the grading to improve the filmic look of the second movie.

“Last year, there was a lot of focus on the frame rate and the technology drove a lot of the reviews,” Jackson acknowledged. “This time around we made a conscious decision that all the press screenings will be in 24, the premiere at 48. Forty-eight is the best way to see the film, personally. And we’ll see what the audience wants.”

Jackson said he spent a lot of time working on the color grading, trying to tone down the high-definition look.

“I think it wasn’t just the frame rate, it was the high-definition look of the cameras that was contributing factor. So I soften it up this year. And I think we’ve got a look now that feels quite nice.”

PJ confirming that the press are an inferior, lower-class of moviegoers. Anyway, whatever he's done to alter the look of the picture, I sure hope it doesn't affect the HFR prints at all.

I think HFR is great, but do think The Hobbit was the wrong film for it. Especially because PJ didn't change up his shooting style one iota for 3D.

The Avatar sequels will be the real match that lights the HFR revolution.

Bought the IMAX3D tickets here in Spokane. Got concerned though because nowhere on the Fandango page did it mention HFR even though the theater was listed on the HFRTheaters site. I called the theater just to be sure and the lady said they weren't getting "that" version :(

.... then again she also sounded a bit unsure about what I was even talking about. So I may call back some other time. Still bummed though if it really is true.
Wanted to see the first one but coulndt because I was stationed jn Germany at the time. Now looks like im in an area where there still isnt any chance nearby.... and I aint driving all the way to Seattle.

Most of the critics hated HFR last year, obviously WB won't want to make that same mistake again.

That is bizarre. Its not any longer than your typical suphero blockbuster. Do they have breaks for those too?

I've only been there last year to see AUJ in HFR and they offered both for that one. I just checked the website and they don't do this with any other movie that is shown right now. I so want to see it in HFR but I don't want to take a break when watching the movie.

Really hyped after those first impressions.

Jurassic Park in Middle Earth sounds pretty incredible. The section in the book
where smaug accosts the mountain while bilbo and the dwarves hide inside
is one of my favorite

Cant wait after those reviews. It looks like Martin Freeman will really shine Bilbo's role, something that felt sidelined in AUJ which as a result made AUJ feel lacking a strong anchor.

I love that they're downgrading the film presentation for the stuffy old critics. Hilarious.

Got my tickets, but for Friday night instead of Thursday. HFR 3D IMAX. So excited.

Yeah, that was definitely something that backfired a little in AUJ. Because they really needed to push Thorin to the forefront since his background and lineage plays such an important role compared to the book, Bilbo did feel like he lost some screentime.

To be fair, Freeman wasn't the best in AUJ. I'm hoping (but am doubtful) that his performance drastically improves in the next two films.

With both Thorin and Bard taking major roles in this film, as well as additional supporting characters (Legolas and Tauriel) and PREMIERE SPOILERS:
Some of the Dwarves staying behind in Lake-town, splitting up screentime further
, I'm not exactly holding my breath that Bilbo will be front and center in this film.

Here I found a few more reactions. Still all very positive :)

Reactions from people who go to movie premieres, basically any movie premiere, are almost always overwhelmingly positive. AUJ was the exact same way.

This has been making the rounds on Tolkien forums today: a bunch of MASSIVELY SPOILERY impressions posted on IMDb's forums by two people who apparently went to the world premiere. No guarantees that it's true, but one of the guys posted a picture of his ticket stub. In any event, we'll find out in a little more than a week.

If you don't want to be spoiled, don't read his posts - it's all 100% accurate from what I read (in the details I mean, opinions are subjective however).

I think the majority of those aren't from fans though, and quite a few from the press screening.

Also, I do remember AUJ had a lot of positive reviews but also a few complaints and I definitely don't remember it being called a masterpiece.

I guess only time will tell though. Hoping for it to be great!

His contact lenses are a lot more prominent this time.

And, half a year later, I reply. I was watching the trilogy with friends last week and I noticed that Legolas' eyes are alternately dark and blue during the films. When Aragorn tells he and Gimli they will hunt the Orcs, his eyes are dark. When they come across Gandalf the White, and he apologises for shooting an arrow at him, his eyes are blue.

In all the images I've seen of him in the new films, his eyes are an even more startling blue than before. Maybe the change in the old films is due to mistakes made and they went with the best scenes shot happened to be when Bloom's makeup staff forgot to apply his contact lenses. The new films, though... they're so blue they're distracting, like really vibrant.

For a brief moment I thought that Edmond had posted :(

What exactly are you referencing? LOTR Blu Rays or Hobbit 2? I don't feel like hunting down Dantes' original post...please provide some context next time ;)

Last time the new-fangled HFR and reviewers' reticence toward it dominated reviews. I have a feeling that if those first critic screenings were in 24fps for AUJ, they would have been full of just as much ball-licking as normal.

This is par the course. Keeping my expectations in check.

Thanks to EW, here's a short clip from a scene between Legolas and Tauriel:

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/12/03/hobbit-desolation-of-smaug-orlando-bloom-clip/

I'm pleasantly surprised! Bloom is still a bit wooden, but that's consistent with LOTR. Evie fits right in, too!

Something about this performances seems cringeworthy to me and not misterious like how Elves looked and sounded in the LOTR movies.

I just don't know maybe I will wait for the bluray instead of watching it in theaters.

Sorry! Very early on in this thread I apparently posted about how odd Legolas' eyes look. I completely forgot about this post, and only saw it when I clicked on the first page of this thread to see what new rumours had been released since I last looked up any information on the film.

As my post was about Legolas' eyes looking more remarkably blue than they did before, it brought to mind scenes from the trilogy which I watched only a few days before, when I noticed that his eyes were different colours in different scenes. So I was wondering about the change, about why they're so incredibly blue in the next Hobbit film.

I was finally able to start working on the Desolation |OT| today, thought I'd give you guys a small preview of where I'm taking it. Bare in mind it's a work-in-progress :)

As I said a page or so back, because I'm severely pressed for time over the next two weeks thanks to life happening + the holidays it's going to be a much smaller OT compared to Dantes' AUJ masterpiece of a thread. But hopefully it will get the job done. No ETA on when it'll be finished, but I'm hoping for next Monday.
