PS4: Standby or Power down?

The network chips are disabled in full shut-down, otherwise it'd be drawing nearly as much power as standby since they use the ARM chip too I believe. Cheap networking components put most of their operations onto a CPU rather than having their own dedicated processing. BT low-power mode is very low power.

Surely they can make my idea work over a direct connection? I understand why it wouldn't make sense over the internet. The Vita has Bluetooth afterall. Just use that to wake the PS4 and then switch to Wifi straight after. Not to mention the fact the Remote Play's connection is treated pretty similarly to a controller's connection to the console.

In theory that could work. It'd probably have to be after trying to find it via the internet though, so it'd be a bit slow. But just some code that says "If not found after trying the internet, send a bluetooth signal to the console to power on like a controller would".

Something I was thinking they should do (even before this bluetooth idea) is to set the kind of Remote Play connection (direct, router or internet) you want to make manually. The way it does it now can be classed as the automatic setting.

I thought I would power down all the way but I've been using standby. My console is completely cool to the touch when in standby. It really doesn't even get that warm when gaming. It's surprised me. It's cool enough that I feel confident keeping my TV stand's glass door closed to keep the dust out (which I prefer, and why I thought I would power down). But now from standby I'm just about 15 or 20 seconds from picking up where I left off in Killzone after I pick up the controller.

I leave my home PC on always so I can remote into it whenever I want/need to. My PS4 follows the same ruleset. Remote Play is just too awesome of a feature!

WOL shouldn't require much power. Apple does it for the iMac with 1w.

I don't remote into any of my home kit so i always power things down while i'm at work. Of course as soon as i'm through the door they get switched on. I've never liked leaving things on while i'm out, too expensive now-a-days too in the UK ;)

My system booting from Standby takes just as long as a fully powered down boot. Hence why I just power my system down. Blows my mind that some people are getting 5 second boots from standby....

Based on my experience here I'm starting to think that fast wake from standby happens if the system is still actively connected to PSN and downloading. Once all downloads are finished, and when PS+ is not refreshing updates or uploading save files, the system seems to drop to a lower level of readiness.

Maybe the then the longer wakes are caused by networking turning back on.

Sure, but the Apple stuff can't download and install things while it's asleep.

I use the standby mode all the time, because that's how it was designed. When that suspend/resume feature makes its way back in, I think everybody will be using it. I only turn the console totally off when I go away on vacation.

I don't own a PS4 yet, but once I do I assume I'll treat it like every other console I've ever owned: completely unplugged unless I'm playing a game on it.

I sometimes go weeks without using a specific console so leaving it plugged in would just be foolish.

Right, but he's talking about just leaving enough power to support WOL.

It depends on the chips. I'm sure with the Apple premium, there are some very high quality parts in there whereas Sony were interested in keeping costs down. The Marvell chips in the PS4 are probably the lowest cost for the performance window they needed.

Yes, exactly. The PS4 cranks up to 70W when it needs to actually do a download from standby mode.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. It all comes down to what consumers demand and are willing to pay for. If more people cared about the power usage, then Sony would care, and they'd spend the time and money to get it done.

The reason it matters is the exact same reason they don't address it. Small numbers get big when you multiply it times 15M units a year. A few cents on a chip, a few watts for standby power, both get large in aggregate.

Overnight I power down as I've got the charging dock for the controllers, but if I'm dling, or going back to use it during the day/evening it's on standby.

Is the machine supposed to make noise when it's in standby? I can hear it making noise nonstop. It's constant so not just when it's downloading something.

You sure that isn't when you first place it into standby? I believe the fan stays on for a little while.

I'd have to double check, but I believe it does shut off after a few minutes.

At first mine runs the fan for a little while, but even once it stops I can still hear a quiet humming from the console that never goes away.

Yes, that is what I'm talking about. Ok, must be normal. It's not too loud but you can hear it when you get close. The ps3 on standby used to be silent so it kind of scared me.

Yeah, I need to put my ear up to it to really hear it, but it's definitely there.

Im not entirely sure but I think the cooling fan inside the ps4 is also running on an extremely low rpm on standby. Had mine on standby and i felt a slight barely noticeable draft at the intake vents when i put my hand by it. Which means its collecting dust inside even in standby.

Not a big fan of that. Ill wait a couple of minutes for it download whatever it needs, no problem.

Standby. It's oh-so-slightly faster to boot, I can charge my controllers, updates download by themselves, I can power on with Vita or PS App.

Most importantly however, is the fan stays active after I enter standby. The system cools down much quicker after 'stopping', which will prolong the life of the unit.

Is it normal that my PS4 does a little noise when on Standby? It's like I can hear the fan a little and it doesn't update or download anything.

I had to turn it off last night, it annoyed me so much.

At first i was leaving on standby but now i just turn it off.

Also, is there any way of disabling auto-hdmi switch? Like if i turn on the PS4 it will automatically switch to HDMI 2 where it's plugged in, it's not that annoying but what is annoying is when i flip through my HDMI and i get on 2 as i am trying to get to HDMI 4 where my cable is and once it hits HDMI 2 it will automatically turn on the PS4. It's a inconvenience when you swap between PC and other stuff often and you happen to run across it and its like BLEEP oh look ps4 is on.

System > Enable HDMI Device Link.

Disable that.

Mine always makes some very slight noise when on standby. Other people are reporting the same thing. Others claim they can't hear anything at all though, so either those people have bad hearing or not all PS4s are the same.

Turn off the HDMI link feature on the PS4? Or, if you want to use it for its other purposes (i.e. controlling the PS4 with your TV remote), your TV should have settings for what it's allowed to do.

LOL. I have the opposite problem. I can't get my receiver to turn it on when I switch to the correct input. I checked the box on the PS4's "Enable HDMI Device Link", but it hasn't done the trick. I have a Pioneer VSX-1021-K, if anyone has any advice for me.

Power down and its funny because the PS3 i left on stand by since launch but with the slightly bigger orange light i almost feel as if though something bad will happen or too much is going on.

I know it may not make sense.

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, standby me

So darling, darling
Standby me, oh standby me
Oh stand, standby me
Standby me

Something that I dont understand, some of the benefits of having it in stand-by are automatic updates, trophy sync, power on from vita for remote play, but why do I need to have it on "stand-by" to have access to the features that my PS3 does while powered off?

I specifically "turn off" of my PS3 after every session. It does have a solid red light on but I see this as no different from a TV or any electrical appliance indicating it is connected to a power source.

Your PS3 can do none of this while powered off. It turns itself on at specific times to perform these operations, then turns off again. The PS4 can do it without turning on, it just has to be in its low-power standby mode rather than being fully turned off.

I bought the accidental protection plan so I've kept my PS4 on stand by since day 1. It's nice having it download everything automatically so when you turn it on it's ready to go.

Mine is powered down when not in use, can't get remote play to work outside of the house so no real point in having it in stand by mode for me

Good point. But how does the Vita have access to power on PS3 while being "off"? I don't think the PS4 can do the same while in the "off" state.

Your PS4 failing from being in standby mode wouldn't be an accident, it would be covered by warranty as it's being used as intended. So you shouldn't need the plan at all in that scenario.

If you have the "wake up PS3 via Remote Play" feature turned on the console never shuts down completely, the networking parts are kept running so it can be woken up remotely. Basically what the PS4 standby mode does, only it does more.

My wife unplugs it whenever she wakes up at night and sees the light orange.

She isn't the brightest with technology and thinks it's either "going to start a fire" or "it's spying on us". I just think it's to piss me off because I use the Vita in bed to play on the PS4.

I see.. thanks. I would like to leave my PS4 on stand-by all the time but that "Your system has shut off abruptly" message that it gives you if there's a power shortage scares the crap out of me :S

I bought the 3 indie game bundle (flower trine sml) on amazon, and then redeemed my codes on my pc at work...does this mean my currently standing by ps4 will download them and they will be ready when I get home??

I want to dig asap damnit.

I always go standby..hoping for a magical bf4 patch to appear over night
