i would unplug. never forget wiiconnect24 overheating and destroying sd cards
The network chips are disabled in full shut-down, otherwise it'd be drawing nearly as much power as standby since they use the ARM chip too I believe. Cheap networking components put most of their operations onto a CPU rather than having their own dedicated processing. BT low-power mode is very low power.
Surely they can make my idea work over a direct connection? I understand why it wouldn't make sense over the internet. The Vita has Bluetooth afterall.
In theory that could work. It'd probably have to be after trying to find it via the internet though, so it'd be a bit slow. But just some code that says "If not found after trying the internet, send a bluetooth signal to the console to power on like a controller would".

My system booting from Standby takes just as long as a fully powered down boot. Hence why I just power my system down. Blows my mind that some people are getting 5 second boots from standby....
WOL shouldn't require much power. Apple does it for the iMac with 1w.

Sure, but the Apple stuff can't download and install things while it's asleep.
I use the standby mode all the time, because that's how it was designed. When that suspend/resume feature makes its way back in, I think everybody will be using it. I only turn the console totally off when I go away on vacation.
I turn mine off completely unless I want to charge a controller. I just don't see many benefits to leaving it in standby.
Right, but he's talking about just leaving enough power to support WOL.
It depends on the chips. I'm sure with the Apple premium, there are some very high quality parts in there whereas Sony were interested in keeping costs down. The Marvell chips in the PS4 are probably the lowest cost for the performance window they needed.
Yes, exactly. The PS4 cranks up to 70W when it needs to actually do a download from standby mode.Right, but he's talking about just leaving enough power to support WOL.

You sure that isn't when you first place it into standby? I believe the fan stays on for a little while. Is the machine supposed to make noise when it's in standby? I can hear it making noise nonstop. It's constant so not just when it's downloading something.

At first mine runs the fan for a little while, but even once it stops I can still hear a quiet humming from the console that never goes away.
Yes, that is what I'm talking about. Ok, must be normal. It's not too loud but you can hear it when you get close. The ps3 on standby used to be silent so it kind of scared me.

At first i was leaving on standby but now i just turn it off.
Also, is there any way of disabling auto-hdmi switch? Like if i turn on the PS4 it will automatically switch to HDMI 2 where it's plugged in, it's not that annoying but what is annoying is when i flip through my HDMI and i get on 2 as i am trying to get to HDMI 4 where my cable is and once it hits HDMI 2 it will automatically turn on the PS4. It's a inconvenience when you swap between PC and other stuff often and you happen to run across it and its like BLEEP oh look ps4 is on.

I had to turn it off last night, it annoyed me so much.

Something that I dont understand, some of the benefits of having it in stand-by are automatic updates, trophy sync, power on from vita for remote play, but why do I need to have it on "stand-by" to have access to the features that my PS3 does while powered off?
Your PS3 can do none of this while powered off. It turns itself on at specific times to perform these operations, then turns off again. The PS4 can do it without turning on, it just has to be in its low-power standby mode rather than being fully turned off.
I bought the accidental protection plan so I've kept my PS4 on stand by since day 1. It's nice having it download everything automatically so when you turn it on it's ready to go.
Good point. But how does the Vita have access to power on PS3 while being "off"? I don't think the PS4 can do the same while in the "off" state.
If you have the "wake up PS3 via Remote Play" feature turned on the console never shuts down completely, the networking parts are kept running so it can be woken up remotely. Basically what the PS4 standby mode does, only it does more.
