PS4 sells 80,000 units at launch in Spain, 3.5:1 ahead of XB1

I wonder if the free Fifa game helped Microsoft AT ALL in Europe. It still doesn't cover the entire price gap but in theory it should have generated some additional sales.

It definitely helped tip the balance for me - that plus the employee discount on the MS-published titles plus seeing some inherent value in Kinect (Kinect fitness for example) meant I could justify the higher price to myself.

I'm still p*ssed off about the size of the performance gap. 900p vs. 1080p wouldn't bother me much (especially if the 900 looks like Ryse) but 720 vs. 1080 most definitely does - so I'll wait to see which way the 2nd wave of games goes and order a PS4 if the size of the gap persists.

Sorry I more meant mainland Europe, I know the UK is stronger. How the hell does Spain survive with such a high unemployment rate.

By being a drain on better performing economies within the EU, one of many reasons why the Brits want a referendum to leave the union.

Clearly Sony don't subscribe to GfK figures in your world...

Lol. You say that as if GFK figures haven't been contested by Sony Europe themselves. Or that GFK have

Also, GFK hasn't begun to chart the PS4 and Xbox One so I don't know what the fuck you're on about.

So, you're saying we can't trust the Australian figures either, right? Those came from Xbox. They only claimed to outsell PS4, but until Sony releases figures we don't actually know.

Actually the Xbox One figures came from NPD. The thread was about how the XBO beat the Wii record.

What the hell are you on about?

Why are you linking to Gfk-Chart Track's UK site in a thread about Spain?

What is that page even supposed to show considering the numbers we have for the UK are from Gfk regardless of what's listed on that page?

:s

I'd just leave him be, he doesn't believe PS4 will outsell Xbox One by respectable/large margins in any country.

So how do you explain this? No specific figures (they don't give them out publically anyway from what I can tell) but "can confirm both consoles have now outsold the Wii U" which suggests that yes, they track both consoles.

I imagine they don't have specific numbers to give for a reason.

Gfk only has a British domain.
GfK is a German company. Also they track sales of pretty much all consumer products in Europe, not just gaming. They operate in almost every European nation and produce weekly game charts which BrunoMB posts in the PAL charts threads. The charts are prepared every Sunday by various GfK subsidiaries for the preceeding week, the NL and UK charts come out first and others follow after that.

As anecdotal evidence, there's a much bigger difference in my town so 3.5:1 looks like a plausible ratio. It will be bigger once PS4 is again in stock as it is sold out everywhere. I can see a 5 or 6 to 1 ratio in the near future.

And asking the question, yes, there's Xbox One stock everywhere.

Basically this.

Ps4 is still selling fine with the restock the past week and the difference will be bigger in the next weeks-months. Xbone is not selling at all after launch but it's a good number for a launch here.

Xbone has stock everywhere.

Nothing like starting the day with a meltdown.

Although I'm not sure these figures are from Gfk.

Lanzamos la máquina el 29 de noviembre y anoche habíamos vendido en España 80.000 unidades de venta al consumidor. Todavía hay pendiente por recoger entre 12.000 y 15.000 preventas

The comparison with XBO would indicate so, but he says they sold 80k units in the launch day (people fluent in Spanish, correct me if I'm wrong), which seems to me they shipped 80k for pre-orders with still another 12k to 15k still waiting for their consoles.

Thanks for posting the news!

Spanish PS Blog announced that Sony brought some more units in December 5th. So figures could be slightly higher right now.

I've read not that long ago that marketshare here in Spain is 55% for the PS·, 30% Wii and 15% Xbox. Still, I think Microsoft has a really dedicated fanbase over here. I've been a 360 owner here for 4-5 years and I've never had any problem getting a game I wanted, there is enough self space in the stores. Dudebros undoubtedly have a PlayStation, but I'd be curious about the attach rate of both consoles. I won't find weird if it's higher in the Xbox.

Here is the link with the market share. It's bolded at the bottom, so you don't really need to know Spanish.

Yes, they are for subscribers, not the public. That is the reason.

I see you ignored the questions above about why we have sales charts for PS4/XB1 software, and the confirmation of hardware outselling the Wii U, if those consoles aren't tracked.

Yeah, it exactly says that, 80k units on launch day and 12-15k still waiting.

About the stock... there is stock now in a lot of places, but only the machine alone, I mean a lot of people is waiting (preorders mostly) for the killzone pack that is not restocked yet on the 5th of December (better value than buying the machine and killzone separately). But the machines alone are selling fast.

Besides the pack with 2 controllers, killzone and camera is out this friday, I think the killzone standard pack will be restocked too.

Full interview with James Armstrong (SCEE VP, CEO Spain+Portugal).

- PS4 has sold around 80.000 units to consumers (between 10.000 - 15.000 preorders haven't been fulfilled yet) as of December 9. That's between 3.1 and 3.4 times more than Xbox One.

- This week they have shipped 60.000 more units and they believe that any consumer will be able to find one. They expect to send a similar additional shipment before Christmas.

- With enough stock, PS4 may exceed 200.000 units sold by Reyes (6th of January).

- Last week PS Vita sold 7.000 units.

They say in the article that it is 12 days vs 19 days on sale which indicates it is based on GfK tracking data. It's unlikely that they would base any comments on easily refutable figures and Sony definitely subscribe to GfK data across the group.

So if Sony sells out their 60k shipment, and on the assumption that Xbox sells an additional 10-20% this week compared to YTD 9th Dec, that would put the ratio at 5 to 5.5 :1

What? Is that really Spanish?

No, I guess it could be Italian. In Spanis it would have been "¡Madre mía!" xD

Interesting interview.

That's good for a country like Spain Vita wise (we are smaller than UK, France and Germany in videogames). Still, there were some offers during our (really) shitty version of the Black Friday. KZ: Mercenaries bundle and one of those Megapacks were sold for 169€, which I think is cheaper than a 3DS (at least cheaper than the XL model).

Hello everybody.

I live in Spain and I am a PS4 early adopter. I went to buy one november the 29th; I was waiting as soon as 9:30am because the store opened at 10am and in fact there were a queue long enough to make the situation a bit unconfortable. Finally I was able to get one (I had my reservation made since july) but in fact the expectation was incredible.

The numbers are wrong, in a sense: the demand for PS4 here is not covered yet and the real difference I bet is going to be even wider (now, PS3 and XTS are 3:1 ). And it´s just the start I think, because here people is really sensitive to price and in this regard PS4 has and undisputed advantage. I think that there´re a bunch of things that may unbalance the consumer decision in Spain: popular games with equal or better (that´s the common belief) performance in PS4 (sports, FPS big franchises, etc), price of the product and PSN+ service, that is quite popular as I know here -because of price vs content, again. In any case I don´t know if the online paywall in PS4 is going to be a problem with sales.

XTS here had a slow start but gained marketshare with time but I don´t know if that ground is going to be retained with XBO.

Sony still has a name in Spain, smartphones of the brand are popular again, for instance. Sony has sold even with a really high price point; being the cheaper this time could do magic to sales.

Time will show.

you mean the brits that never joined the euro to begin with and have been the kings of exportation thanks to the pound devaluation?

hmph...

It went from 1.5:1 ratio in the end of 2006 to almost parity around 2009 and now it's around 1.2:1.

For about half the generation, UK stole game sales from other countries due to impossible-to-match prices. I bet the same happened in other areas.

Spaniard here: no, they didn't sell 80k units on launch day. Let me attempt to translate:

"The PS4 was launched on November the 29th, and up to last night we've sold 80k units in Spain [Note: actual units bought by customers, not units shipped to stores]. There are still 12k-15k unfulfilled pre-orders."

Because the article is from today and it says that James Armstrong's quote is from this morning, it means that 80k units have been sold between November the 29th and December the 12th.

Also, the 6th and the 8th of December are national holidays, i.e. stores are not open, in case it's of any relevance.

edit: Let me add that while it's true that I live in a small city and my province isn't that big either, during the PS2 era I never saw an Xbox. A few friends of mine (and myself) had Gamecubes, almost everyone had a PS2 to play "el Pro". During last-gen, I had a 360 and I was in the minority, but 360s were quite common.

So, it's 80k by Dec. 9? And there are 60k units coming, not 15k?

And it's 3.1 to 3.4 times higher than XBO, not 3.5?

Did anyone actually pay attention to what this Sony guy was saying at all? Or was he changing the numbers every time he got a new interviewer?

Mess. =P

He states that there are 15K preorders not fulfilled yet (Hola Kojiro!), but they are expecting a 60K restock, so some will be for preorders and the rest to outlets. In Spain the important holiday for present is not the 25th of December it is the 6th of January, so they are trying to get stock for that date.

When I read about countries like this, it makes me wonder just how many consoles were sold in my home state of West Virginia.

1.8 million people in WV
350 million people in North America

PS4 sales 1 million in North America on launch
1.8/350 = 0.005

0.005 x 1000000 = 5142 PS4 launch PS4's sold in West Virginia
