Ads on PS4 - it'shappening.gif

Honestly never been to bothered by ads (except those web ones that take over your screen!). Everything has ads, I buy a newspaper it has ads, I subscribe to a TV channel it has ads and the list goes on and on. Unfortunately I think its just a reality of the world we live in, everybody wants everything as cheap as possible so companies look for other opportunities to find revenue. It would be interesting if Sony offered a sub (that cost the average amount they earn from ads per device) as an option to disable ads how many people would buy it? I'm guessing very few, most people would rather ignore the ads and pay less.

It doesn't really bother me in the What's New feed, but I would still prefer if it was at least something related to any service on the PS4. SO if it movies, make it movies available on the store.

Odd, I seem to remember the threads complaining about the 360 having ads being much more hostile.

To be fair, those were like McDonalds ads etc. And all over the place. Well, in the US anyway. The ads were never that bad on 360 here in the UK.

Personally, I'm all for ads for downloadable content etc, whether it's games, movies, music or whatever, but it does annoy me a little when there's ads for other non-related stuff. Also frustrates me that the PS4 Store has a PS Plus ad every time I go on, even though I'm already a subscriber.

Isn't that exactly what the what's New feed is for?... You hand it on the PS3 too. It's telling you what's New on the PSN Store.

If you were seeing McDonald's ads then I'd worry.

How is it a facade when they came out with the cheapest, most powerful, and developer friendly console?

That section on PS4 is supposed to tell you what's new with your friends activity.

Where is that written? It's supposed to tell you What's New. It's not called Friends Feed. It has the same name as the PS3 one, only is been improved to show stuff from friends as well.

I thought the 'What's New?' section has always been like that? I remember the same thing in a certain section on the PS3 that advertises games.

Of course it didn't take long for someone to compare this to the 360 and the hostility differences...Sheesh.

Those aren't ads. They're recommendations.

Not noticed any ads for items sold off store on mine (UK). Granted, I haven't been on the store much but there's certainly none in my activity feed.

Separate them then, and stick the What's New ads in the store where they belong. If you're going to have a friend feed and then put it at the head of the one bar that everyone has to view, keep it to just relevant friend info. Or create an option to turn it off completely.

Hey just checked the What's New tab and nope no ads there. Warframe stuff like ____ friend was just killed by The Stalker and a trailer for Star Trek. Hardly ads at all and in fact hidden away from the main screen. Sends you start to the PS store cause it's media content. If we start getting ads for sugar water or doritos then we got an "ad" problem.

I'd hope not, because if that took any effort whatsoever they should be embarrassed.

Try the stench of sarcasm, Mr Defensive. Anyone who wasn't expecting ads was deluding themselves.

My bad, sarcasm detector is off today.

Odd, I seem to remember the threads complaining about the 360 having ads being much more hostile.

Because on your homepage for every 1 system centric tile (disk drive, my pins etc) you got 2 adverts.

It was never always this way. They just doubled it with an update, here is the homepage pre update.

Did Sony change something with video shares or have I just not been paying attention?

Just uploaded to Facebook just now and it looks like it posted two different shares for the same video. One with no description and another one with a long ass description that is basically a link to the PS Store to buy the game...wtf?

I like that right now the ads I have are for Star Trek and then an ad attempting to sell me a PS4. Yep, Sony is trying to sell me on buying a PS4...on my PS4. I only need one right now, Sony. Thank you though.

Reminds me of getting Nexus 7 ads while watching youtube on my Nexus 7.

Wait, I just realized there's no way the Desolation of Smaug is on the movie store already, I take back what I said, that's bad.

Sony would never do this. They would never implement microtransactions. They would never charge for multiplayer. Nope, not hearing it. They're "For The Players", remember.

You do know there is ads on xb1 right, and there were ads on ps3.

edit hahah it was in jest, its hard to tell these days on gaf.

They have all the same media device intentions and goals. Talk out the "for the gamers" routine and everyone parrots it. Lets not get it twisted, it's the most appealing and future-proof for gamers, but it's an intentional marketing move to rally the core for a machine and suite of services that has the same goal as their competitor, but may just be lacking an exclusive deal or two at launch. Which ironically, strengthens the approach even further. It's quite genius, actually. Seriously, the difference in the Verge's reviews sums up pretty well how their approach worked when it comes to what dimensions they chose to assess the PS4 and X1, and how in the future we will see a convergence rather than a divergence in efforts.

I guess this is sort of a tangent in this thread but its been quite well calculated by Sony and pretty impressive how well it's worked in affecting public perception.

I'll say the same thing I said to the people ripping on Live "ads".

If they're showing content available to buy ON YOUR CONSOLE, then I don't consider them ads. But I'm eager to see some of the hypocrites pop up in this thread.

UK PS3 had film trailer links /ads in the What's New tile thing - think I might have seen a couple of FMCG ads in there from time to time but nothing in my face. So long as it stays in the WN feed I don't really give a toss.

It doesn't bother me, as long as they keep it away from my main list and it doesn't interfere with my navigation. Which was the 360's biggest fault when it came to ads. If it's left as PSN ads and one or two things in the What's New list, who cares. And charging for PSN would suck if I didn't get it for $30 per year and I already got games for free that made it pretty damn valuable.

If it stays in "What's New" then it doesn't bother me a bit. If they start creeping into the main strip of the UI then I'll be pissed off.

It happened with the What's New on PS3 like everyone said.

However, there is one major difference - since the What's New now incorporates your friend's activity feed, it's become more interesting. So what did increase is the likelyhood of me seeing the ads.

I assume you can still hide What's New in the settings. This news makes me more cautious about getting a ps4 though. If ads ever appear on the dash, I'm out from consoles for good. That's something I won't put up with (Singstar icon is bad enough).

Ads in the store are ok.
Ads in your home, games tab and movies tab like the 360 is NOT OK.
Ads in friends activity feed is gray area. My criteria is that as long as you can start a game or a video without having to see any ads is ok. You can do that in the ps4. Can't do that on the 360 or xb1

I don't even bother with the What's New section anymore, to be honest. Do you guys check it a lot?

just... twice since release. and it's highly uninteresting. I think the ads there are the most interesting stuff.
tbh I don't care about ads as long as they are not intrusive and related to gaming/the konsole. I mean, to see those adds you actually have to look for them, it's not like on the *competitors console* where the ads are all around... everytime...staring at you...

Marketing and PR works! Who would've thunk it?

Sony's Marketing and PR has been spot on so far. They'll have to switch up their messaging in a year or two, though, lest they risk alienating the more casual, mainstream gaming audience.
