Ads on PS4 - it'shappening.gif

Not noticed any ads for items sold off store on mine (UK). Granted, I haven't been on the store much but there's certainly none in my activity feed.

I totally take all the above back, went on today and there the ads were. I'm not happy with it, will probably fire a letter off and see what Sony say (if anything).
You scared me for a second.

PSN ads have been on the What's New section for ages on both the PS3 and PS4.

Now if they were on the actual UI and/or if the ads were non gaming related, there would be hell to pay...
They are non-gaming related, very first thing I saw was an ad for The Desolation of Smaug which dwarfed everything else in my feed.

I don't like it. Not at all.

The only think I'll say is that I'll never see them if they remain in the activity feed (What's New). That's an area I spend zero time, and if it turns into an advertising slot, then I'll avoid it all the more. I'll be furious if it's any more invasive than this.

I've never checked the what's new section on my PS4. I have no interest, because I'm usually up to date on PS stuff. I always thought something like what's new was expressly for shit like ads/marketing?

I realize that we pay for these systems, pay for online ability, pay for most of the games, but I don't mind some advertising. I don't want it to be invasive or excessive but at the same time if it shows me more thins I can do with my box (say renting iron man 3 for 99 cents) then I'm all for it.

my problem with What's New isn't the ads (I've seen like 1-2 ads per page of like 10-15 content pieces... not a horrible ratio)

My problem is that what's new is kind of worthless. It doesn't seem to update with NEW content very quickly (I got some Doki Doki Uni trophies that took like a day to show up) and mostly it's littered with "So and so played blah". Now I am GLAD that it says that, but would like it to tell me that they did this like seconds after they did it do I can hop in if I'm in something else. But it doesn't seem that responsive. Instead I'm stuck going to my friends list.

ultimately they should just let us choose what get's posted to our What's New. Personally I would limit it to:

Shares (screens, videos and streams)
trophies
new friends
in-game posts (I know a bunch of Sony games do this. they seem like accomplishments, though not necessarily trophies)

uh, what did you expect when you clicked on "whats new"? lol
A friends feed, with their activities and the like.

If it were a "what's new" page in the store that would be different. As it stands the ads are outside of it in a social section.

What I'm wondering is why they hadn't shown before today as a fair few have said they have had the ads there for a while. Also others who have not got them (yet?). Maybe we've just not noticed or something, or size of ads increased. Haha, I don't know.

I like to use What's new to see if any of my friends are streaming content. I would prefer a notification though when someone started a new stream

Also, this is a total non issue at present. There are barely any ads and the ones there are are not in any way intrusive.

I absolutely detest ads being forced onto a platform I already paid tons of money for through an online service I'm paying extra for. I can't stand it.

However, as long as
a) The ads don't autoplay video or music AND
b) The ads are confined to the 'what's new' section
then I can live with this.

exactly my thoughts. have a separate section that i don't have to look at, and put as many ads there as you want, for whatever. don't care at all.

but if i have to look at some stupid fucking Singstar logo every time i boot up my console (euro PS3..), i will be highly irritated and think less of Sony and buy less of their products.

Not sure what to think. Thoughts?
It's completely off the beaten path, doesn't interfere with me using the system for any of its normal purposes. If Sony infects the Recently Played menu strip with ads that force you to skip past them to get to a game/app I want to play/use, then it'll be a problem.

Wait, so this is just on a certain tab? That's...not as bad? Still ridiculous, if you're paying for PS+ you shouldn't have to see fucking ads plastering the dashboard. But if it's only that page I suppose it's a lesser of two evils.

edit: missed the "what's new" part. No complaints.

I don't mind if it's contained to the What's New section. If they start adding them on the main menu, ala XB1, I'd be kind of pissed.

Companies learn from each other. Sony learned that the console audience is willing to put up with ads and subscription fees from the Microsoft's success with the 360. The seeds were sown, welcome to next gen (fees).

Its just at Whats New tab. As long as them continue there , it doesnt bothers me at all! And I use to check quite a lot the Whats New section.. its just that its nothing over used, and at appropriate location.

Where? Explain yourself.

Pretty much everyone was up in arms when the same thing happened on the 360. Even when it wasn't McDonalds/Doritos/Mountain Dew ads. Sony puts 'em on the PS4? It's fine.

I'm just amused by what a deathgrip Sony's got on the gaming audience these days. The power of good messaging, I guess.

Context is everything.

Way to generalize the entirety of gamers who enjoy Sony's consoles as well.

You seem to be ignoring the fact that the ads on the PS3 and PS4 exist in the What's New feed, not built-in to the main screens like on the Xbox 360. Also, a lot of people ARE complaining regardless.

Not at all. It's just that the OP makes it seem like this is relatively new to the Playstation (the "itshappening.gif" part is particularly annoying) when it's not.

Not to bloody mention that he found advertising for new entertainment product under a section called "What's new".. What the hell did he expect to see there? lol.

Ahh, I see. Fair enough, hadn't had my coffee yet

Awful lot of double standards up in here...
I suspect that the people who cried the most about ads on the 360 are just ignoring this thread, it's only four pages afterall.

And here we go again with this enthusiast persecution complex without logic sentiment being repeated over and over. Try to think before you post. This one ad is in a particular "What's New" segment of the UI. You actually have to scroll in to and wade through it. It is not littered on the main dash or main UI navigation menu the way it was or is with the 360.

I never have to see ads on PS4.

The moment I turn on my 360, I'm greeted with ads. No double standards here, but nice try at generalizing.

I really hate having ads on my console ... one of my biggest gripes with my 360. But PS4 having ads in an area I only frequent when I am actively looking for new things eg "What New" section is fine by be (so long as it stops there, crosses fingers).

Really?....Like any of you complainers would have a PS4 or any console for that matter had you not found out about them via paid advertisement and promotion.

Hypocrites...

PS3/PS4 ads in a designated marketing tab that the system does not default to on start up.

Xbox 360 ads all over the dashboard and on the very first tab that the system boots to on start up.

Yeah, totally analogous.

I watch movie trailers on Hulu Plus all the time, but if the movie trailers listing was the first thing that came up every time I loaded Hulu Plus it would piss me off.

Restricting the marketing to a designated "opt in" area is how it SHOULD be done on these consoles. There won't be zero advertising, but there shouldn't be forced advertising.

Why do people keep saying this like What's New is part of the store?

a) it's the first thing the PS4 goes to when you turn it on
b) it's the activity feed where you see what's new with your friends

That said, the ads don't bother me but I didn't care on the 360 either

This. I don't like ads on either platform given I'm paying for a subscription service, be it Gold or Plus. But at least the PS4 dashboard isn't

Completely missed opportunity from Sony not putting ads on the main strip. Advertisers won't care if they sell 2 million PS4 if only 200,000 go to the what's new tab. Microsoft can charge more for ad space since the advertiser can be guaranteed the target will see it. Nintendo? They aren't even close to ever seeing as dollars with their platform.

This is how ad men think folks. Sony will bend a some point when they see how enticing these ad dollars become.

There is a difference depending on what is in the ad though. People use their consoles for games, movies, and music, so having unobtrusive ads on certain parts of the UI is forgiveable. It's when there is more screen real estate being used for ads for non entertainment companies than it is for content that the user may actually be interested in.

It goes to the disc in my tray actually.

The content that it's supposedly there to show - new activity of people on my friends list. And you don't click on it. It takes you right there immediately upon logging in.

I don't own any disc games, so I have no clue about that. For me, it goes to What's New

Yeah, totally analogous.

Except What's New is not a designated marketing tab (it's your friends news feed) and it does default to it on start up (unless you have a disc in apparently)

Mine goes to the top level dashboard when I turn it on. Yours loads up the What's New section? Weird.

I don't think I changed any settings either...
