PS4: Standby or Power down?

I thought I'd let my PS4 run in standby 24/7 before I got it... but since the apartment next door burned down last friday (1 hour after I hooked my PS4 up) I'm not sure whether I want to keep it running in standby (my apartment was filled with smoke due to bad isolation).

I bought the 3 indie game bundle (flower trine sml) on amazon, and then redeemed my codes on my pc at work...does this mean my currently standing by ps4 will download them and they will be ready when I get home??

I want to dig asap damnit.

I always go standby..hoping for a magical bf4 patch to appear over night

If you sent em to the download list, it should. Just making the purchase probably won't. It should ask after finishing the purchase.

LOL. I have the opposite problem. I can't get my receiver to turn it on when I switch to the correct input. I checked the box on the PS4's "Enable HDMI Device Link", but it hasn't done the trick. I have a Pioneer VSX-1021-K, if anyone has any advice for me.

Your receiver supports HDMI ARC, i've had a quick look at the manual on the Pioneer site but couldn't see where to enable it. You may need to enable it on the TV too. I have it on because my PS4 goes into the TV directly and HDMI ARC returns the audio to the receiver so it comes through the 5.1 speakers not the TV.

It also turns the receiver off when i turn off the TV which is handy.

Ok guys! Now I do realize what is happening to my PS4 (I said earlier that it was too warm in standby).

LOL, im feeling so noob right now!! But here it goes:
Besides the download list in notifications tab did not specified I was downloading anything, the console still was downloading all night and all day (and is still downloading it... damn 1mbps) Knack in the background. But to see that I have to open the game app... thats why I did not realized it beofre.

I thought the game would be playable, but the download status would be all the time showing at the notification tab. My mistake!

So... my PS4 was warm even in standby not just because of the enviroment (73F now, 83 earlier), but because it was all night and all day, downloading Knack in the background.

Thats a relief!! And yeah... it was very newbish from my part! lol

Thanks, I'll poke around some more. Wish my Harmony PS3 Adapter worked with the PS4. It would make my life much simpler.

Is the fan suppose to stay in during standby mode? I can hear the fan spinning very quietly overnight when the ps4 is in standby.

Good point. But how does the Vita have access to power on PS3 while being "off"? I don't think the PS4 can do the same while in the "off" state.

Something that I dont understand, some of the benefits of having it in stand-by are automatic updates, trophy sync, power on from vita for remote play, but why do I need to have it on "stand-by" to have access to the features that my PS3 does while powered off?

I specifically "turn off" of my PS3 after every session. It does have a solid red light on but I see this as no different from a TV or any electrical appliance indicating it is connected to a power source.

Your ps3 isn't powered off unless u flick that switch n the back.... that's right your ps3 has been n standby all this time... UOENO

power down.

PS4 is in the bedroom and I hate the fan noise in the night...

I miss the automatic turn-on feature where it checks for updates etc. ._.

70 watts thats like $70 a year in electricity. I could buy a nice GPU with $350 bucks in 5 years just by leaving it off. My pc is only 2 watts on hibernate and even then I still turn it off 9 times out of 10. I will remember never to leave that thing on stand by. It must be a typo.

That is the power consumption while in standby and downloading content.

It should only be on while it is downloading something. Once that is done it should go to the no fan level.

Mine was in standby 24h/day. But at this time of the year where I live the rain is coming even when I do not expect, and strong. For that reason my PS4 turned off twice with energy breaking.

Now Im letting my PS4 in standby while im home. When I go out I prefer to turn it off. At least while this time of rains lasts.

Anyone still having issues with downloading updates in standby mode? The 1.52 system update was ready to install I powered on the console, but game updates still begin downloading only after I boot up.

Normally in standby but with me switching manually between PS3/4 lately I have to power it off. It seems to boot in the same time anyway.

I had my PS4 on standby for two straight weeks. Turned it on, it booted up in about 7-10 seconds, all of my patches were downloaded automatically, 0 issues.

Can't see why I can't leave it like that all the time. So, standby for me.

I leave mine on standby for Remote Play and downloading my updates and patches. However, last night, I woke it up from standby and it only then decided to download my 6GB update for DCUO and 600MB update for BF4.

Kind of annoying as I thought it should have downloaded both during standby. It has always done this in the past but last night was the first time I've seen it not download those updates.

Same thing. 1.52 didn't download in standby for me and I don't think I've yet seen a patch download apart from when I turn it on.

[Power Save Settings] > [Set Functions Available in Standby Mode] > [Supply Power from USB Ports] = OFF.

You can leave the other two options ON and the fan still shuts off completely.

I'm surprised so many people keep it off altogether. I always have mine in standby. My connection isn't the greatest, so it's nice to be able to trigger downloads when I'm away and have them ready by the time I get home.

On a sidenote why are the power and eject buttons so shitty? It's like i never know when I've actually actually pushed the button.

No need to turn power supply off.

My standby is with everything setted on, and still the fans shuts off. What may be happening with him, is what happened with me... maybe he thinks the download have completed, but it is still downloading (and he can only see the progress inside the game app).

I can never remember which is which. I think they went with form at the expense of function on the buttons.

Gaf I have a question. So I had the PS4 hooked up to my friends HMZ-T1(Sony's HD HeadMounted Display, which by the way was just mindblowing), when I would resume the PS4 from standby mode, there was absolutely no start up screen, the console would instantly display the Dynami UI Icons(the UI Icons were already loaded, you don't see the swirling icon). But now I have the PS4 connected to a LED monitor, and every time I start up the PS4 from standby mode, it takes the same time as you would turn on the PS4 from powered off state. What could the problem be?

Until they patch in the instant resume function where I can turn the PS4 on and be in a game right where I left off, I'll be turning mine off. The boot time was the same for me whether it was from suspend or from being completely off. Since I have so many other electronics including 5 PCs and laptops that are usually always on I'll do Mother Earth a favor and turn the PS4 off until instant resume gives me a reason to continue the rape.

Same here.

Its not the fan, I think, but PSU noise. Something very quiet like the sound what sound speakers do when not used but plugged in.

Guess some people are bad at hearing.

Why not make it just wake on lan, every night the thing should check for updates, if there aren't any go to <1w standby.

Really hate that it draws that much w and has its fan on. Thats a no go for me. I may be giving standby a chance if game resume comes by, love that on the vita.

They're not traditional buttons. You don't push them, you touch them. Same thing as the original PS3 eject button, except that I find you only have to graze them in order to activate them. Very functional, IMO.

I can confirm this is true for my PS4.

If I disable [Supply Power from USB Ports], after the light turns orange, it hums for 10 or 15 more seconds and then stops completely.

If I keep that option, it still stays in some weird limbo mode. Not doing anything in background, but making that barely audible noise.

Honestly I'm afraid of Stand By, I just recently had a power outage in my room because my sister plugged a Hair Dryer on the opposite side of the power outlet, both PS4 and my PC were connected in the outlet and Thank God they both shut down. So I'm sticking with shut down till the end of the console cycle.

Despite my best efforts, my PS4 has yet to download anything overnight while in Stand by. I may as well completely shut it down now. It won't update anything until it's on, which defeats the entire purpose of stand by.

Edit: yes I've switched all the right settings on.

I'm going to have to do this. I just got my kid Skylanders and the portal that comes with it lights up when plugged in. I don't really wanna have to plug it in every time he wants to play it, which is obviously going to be a lot. :)

I leave mine on standby, but it's connected to an APC Smart UPS battery backup in case of power outages/brownouts. For people who don't want to leave theirs on standby, does anyone know if PS4 has the option from PS3 to turn off the console after downloads complete and install? Seems the only option to download a bunch of data overnight is to either leave the PS4 on or put it on standby.

Also, like a poster said above, when I woke my PS4 out of standby last night, the activity lights started blinking furiously on the network switch the PS4 was connected to. And I noticed the PS4 started downloading that 6GB DCUO update. Other updates downloaded and installed just fine while in standby so the feature seems hit or miss.

This is how I discovered that turning off USB Power silences the fan. I keep a USB memory stick plugged in for local save backups and the activity light stayed on in standby. I have the DS4 charging dock so don't need USB Power anyway.

I've bought the 16GB model of this so everything's neat and tidy but I'm not so confident it'll fit. If only PS4 had an SD card slot like the launch PS3!

1. I know how capacitive buttons work. I just think they suck.
2. I still can't tell which button is which. At least the PS3 had legible labels on the buttons.

I believe the problem is it only checks for game updates once or twice a day. They are not pushed to the systems automatically. So if you turn your system on a few hours after the update came out it still will not have been downloaded..

Powered down for now because I basically have no reason to turn it on until more games are released.

I just want to know what's better for the system. Is it like a computer, where going to shutdown causes more wear and tear on it?

This hasn't been a real problem for PCs since, like, 1995. Unless you're talking about hard shutdowns, which can screw up just about anything with a hard drive.

Exactly. I'm not mentally challenged. If the buttons worked like the original PS3 buttons, I would have no problem with them. They are tiny and they don't actually respond to the slightest touch. It wasn't actually clear that they were capacitive from my experience so obviously they aren't that great. I have no problem with the capacitive buttons on the xbox one because there's an immediate response (tone) to the smallest of touches.
