GameSpot selects their overall Game of the Year for 2013

Well, I'm just glad handheld games are getting some love, I dislike the the silly idea that console games need to be the ones winning GotY awards.

The only people I ever see saying this are the pro handheld people. Never seen anyone in a GOTY discussion dismiss a game just because it was on a handheld.

So much for the notion, "Why can't handhelds get GOTY?" :p

I personally had handheld GOTY all the time, just good to see it happening on a major media outlet!

I kind of like the choice! It's daring, different, yet I can be cool with it.

To be fair, a lot of the vitriol toward TLoU is probably from Nintendo fanboys without a PS3 who never played TLoU. Whenever someone says TLoU doesn't have gameplay, that person has absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

TLOU has gameplay, but I thought it was stale and the enemy encounters were way too mechanical. There was no sense of danger for me because encounters were always in groups instead of organic or sporadic as they should have been. For the most part I felt like I was just slowly moving forward with grouped encounters to break it up. I didn't find that to be particularly exciting or brilliant, but it was an okay game.

Wow GameSpot was the last gaming website that I thought would give Nintendo games a fair shake.

Anyway congrats to ALBW. It's the fastest I've ever beaten a Zelda game before. Not because it was short, but because I enjoyed it so much.

Yeah I agree this is probably the most baby game ever. But, at least they didn't do a xbox game of the year. Still this didn't sell more than TLOU. Just poor taste in gaming.

I said wow

I'm not even going to bother telling you to do your research, you obviously cannot be fucked. It's not a goddamn remake, fucking hell.

You and others are incredibly good at not understanding things and getting really mad about it. Let me help I don't mean direct game to game remakes. I mean making the same 4 or 5 franchises. I want to name games that I think are illustrative of why I'm tired of Nintendo but I feel it will bring out even more defenders of those games and further derail my point. All I'm saying is I want innovation on any front from Nintendo, I want creativity. I want NEW and not new tacked on the title of a game.

Its possible, I never said it wasn't. I think if this game came out in March it wouldn't even be in the top 5. Proximity of release to GOTY deliberations causes things like this to happen. But this is barely about GOTY for me. Hence my first comment.

The main point here is I'm tired of Nintendo making the same games over and over again. I want a new IP, I want to see what Nintendo can do when they aren't afraid. Everything they've been releasing is pretty safe. Nintendo will put "New", "U", "Luigi" on anything they can to basically make the same game but with some new paint.

I'm just wondering, have you played the game?

Kinda surprised at the reactions in this thread, to be honest. I played TLoU, it was pretty decent and will probably get a GotY nomination from me on gaf.

But

They really didn't do much interesting, especially from a gameplay standpoint. It basically follows the Half-Life model (mentioned this before) shrunk down to be more low-brow, mass market. And the narrative that gets so much praise is essentially a refined implementation of the way Uncharted told its story. As in, light gameplay while characters interact for some of the lower key stuff, while key plot points are delivered through cutscenes. I can think of only one/two times where they really transcend beyond that. Not that the plot/character development weren't good (they were), but the way it was told wasn't as unique as tends to be made out.

In other words, I don't have a problem with the Zelda pick, and I think people should take a step back when assessing TLoU and GTA.

Do I have to do it? OK, fine.

I'd never consider a handheld game as a GOTY contender because I'd never play a handheld game at all.

No need to quote my tag. Everyone can read it.

Well...

No, really I'm not joking (everyone else, please stop asking that).

I'm not saying ALBW is a bad game. In fact, it might even be a great game. But the fact of the matter is that, at the end of the day, it's still a handheld game. Just like no matter how big an ant gets, it's still an ant (barring genetic engineering, obviously).

Have you played the Wonderful 101? That's a great first-party Nintendo game that plays like nothing else out there.

I don't know if that's entirely true. In the first 3 pages of this thread:

It could've been all that and more on Wii U.

Nintendo understands its 2013, GOTY

um wut? Gamespot liked the game. Gamespot liked the game more than any other game released this year. Gamespot therefore gave it game of the year. What are you even saying with your posts? Nintendo shouldn't be rewarded for making good games? Just because they're not new IPs doesn't mean they're the exact same games.

So every member here on GAF has a Wii U, 3DS, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC to evaluate all these contenders accordingly? I've played several of the games on the list (TLoU being my favorite), but not all. I have however played video games for over 20 years and know to a large extent how I will perceive a game. It's how most of us debate this list.

My GOTY last year was Hotline Miami, so Zelda being a handheld game didn't affect my thoughts on this years GOTY.

The problem is your wording. Word yourself differently, by saying something like "Of the games I played, I liked X game the best".

But this isn't the game I liked and wanted to win!? How can this be!?! People have different tastes?? WHAT!?

(Glad it wasn't Bioshock Infinite or GTAV.)

What's funny is, TLOU and GTAV have about 25 GOTY awards each compared to ALBW 1, and everyone is focusing on the 1. Nintendo always puts butts in the seats

That's what I'm thinking. Those other games are probably getting way more praise than this one, which is fine, they're both great games, but Gamespot recognizing ALBW for being a great game is bad?

What happens is that most people don't give a rats ass about the websites that have given "25 awards each" to TLOU or GTAV, but they, for whatever reason, definitely so care about GameSpot's opinion.

do you even have to ask that question

I'm only halfway though ALBW and it's still my GOTY. It's the first Zelda I've played in ages where it felt like Nintendo actually understood what made the series so appealing in the first place.

No overbearing story, no handholding, no linear paths. They just drop you into the world with an item rental system and leave you mostly on your own to figure out what to do. Every Zelda needs to be based on that concept from now on.

I don't consider 101 a first party nintendo game. Also I don't have a Wii U, as it hasn't proven its value to me.

I'm just wondering, have you played the game?

I told you its barely about the game , it about Nintendo. Saying it wouldn't be in the top 5 was a guess. When games come out late and are good they usually get preference over older games. So that wasn't a dig at the game persay but more at the nature of GOTY lists. Its no ones fault it just happens.

I'll get it a few years when Nintendo decides to take 4 dollars off the price. I've been busy playing other games, 40 is steep for what I see as not a huge deal. Keep in mind I don't have reverence or any real nostalgia for Zelda. I watched the QL and some stuff like that and it didn't motivate me to buy it. I feel fine saying I don't think it would be my GOTY if 30+ minutes of it didn't make me want to buy it.

Excellent choice. I prefer Bioshock and 3D World, but ALBW is my favorite Zelda since Wind Waker. Clever design, great pacing, and plenty of nonlinearity without sacrificing game structure.

it's because it's an snes remake that changes only a few things but i didn't say that it's an snes remake it's but it's not about the game it's about nintendo but also the game is probably good but also probably not changed so it's about the game isn't different too but not about the game

Poor tlou. It's like the cool hipster thing to not like now. Come on. It is a new IP at the end of a generation that does not suck.

And the people that say, "glad another apocolypse game doesnt win!". But a zelda game getting recgonized as good is such a rare occurence... Gamers are fucking weird.

"Mario and zelda are such unappreciated gems! And are so unique and creative!"

agreed. and, for those that need some hand-holding, we can just use gamefaqs guides like we did for the older ones anyway!

i mean...i never did that or anything....

gotta say, the most impressive thing about this selection is that it's on a handheld. Handheld enthusiasts everywhere should be happy they're getting some recognition. 3DS and Vita fans need to UNITE!

True that! A ninteno handheld and Zelda finally getting some recgonition! Woohoo!

This game I haven't played is clearly inferior to this other game I haven't played.

I did play Fire Emblem so it got robbed, and only because it came out at the start of the year.

I find it quite strange that it is seemed as controversial for a Zelda game to win goty award, when the Zelda franchise has almost always been of extremely high quality.

Or the people shitting on it because: "Zombie game" or "Interactive movie" lol.

But again, ALBW is absolutely deserving of GOTY. I'm nearly positive it will get my vote. TLoU will be second. The hard part is deciding the order of #3-10!

That might be some of it... But there are plenty of valid arguments for not liking the game as well. I found almost every part of the game dull. The stealth mechanics were bare bones. Couple that with the lack of enemy variety and it makes for one boring slog. The story was descent, but for me that is not enough. There were some great moments though.

I agree that ALBW is deserving of the award though, even if I was let down a bit by it.

Wow! The game is fantastic but that's still a brave move for Gamespot. Good on then though, it's high on my list and definitely the best 3DS game I've played this year (which is saying a lot).

You can consider the Earth flat if you want, that doesn't change the fact it's a first-party Nintendo game.

Let me show you something This and This Take note of the developers. Then tell me its a first party game. Nintendo gave them money and feedback but saying Nintendo made that game is just inaccurate.
