Sorry for the bump but I'd like advice:
A show to watch for my mother.
So far she has enjoyed shows like;
Lost, Fringe, Sherlock, Luthor and Twin Peaks.

I was thinking Hannibal or Homeland.

She enjoys intricate plots and whodunnits.
Any other shows to watch?

Hmm. In terms of whodunnits, have her check out The Killing (make sure she knows the first mystery is two seasons long), Broadchurch (I haven't seen it, but it's apparently very very good), and The Bridge. And maybe Veronica Mars

If she likes Twin Peaks and Fringe, have her watch The X Files.

Wow, Six Feet Under is pure gold. Can't stop watching. Almost done with season 1 after marathoning it these last two days. I love going into a show knowing absolutely nothing, and getting hooked with the entire series available to watch on demand. Great characters!

Some of the fantasy moments have been amazing.

Veronica Mars is awesome. Has a big case/mystery of sorts each season plus she does little cases each week. Not sure if the high school setting would be your mother's cup of tea though.

Quarter of the way through Birdman and the Galaxy Trio. So painfully... stilted. It's delightful.

I hope this will do it. I can't absorb any more solar power."

Nip/Tuck is quite good. It reminds me a lot of Chuck Palahniuk's work. Julia is one of the most insufferable characters I think I've ever seen in a television show, however.

Finished Farscape Season 4.

I can't believe this series could have ended on a cliffhanger. Thankfully the fans came through and supported the Peacekeeper Wars movie to finish things off.

I haven't watched the movie yet. Decided to buy the DVD on Amazon for $8. I watched Farscape mostly through Amazon Prime Video so I was sorely disappointed that, for some reason, the ever-important finale movie wasn't up for the same instant streaming. That's just weird.

But, whatever. $8 to support the franchise. This was a pretty fun sci-fi series to watch so I will miss it when it's over. I definitely grew to enjoy the characters.

I blasted through season 1-2 of Homeland the past couple weeks. S1 was definitely better, but wow at that gaf hyperbole about how terrible S2 is. It definitely wasn't as good and there were more turn-off-your-brain moments but it was still entertaining. I'd planned on following S3 anyway so I wanted to be caught up.

S7 is the best season since S4. Not saying much, but it's something. It's S8 that is competing for "worst season" status.

I watched the pilot of "The Americans" the other day. All I knew of the premise was that it was about two KGB spies living undercover as an American couple during the Reagan years. That, to me, is a very solid premise. You could use their outsider-yet-seeming-insider status as an "in" to satirize various aspects of American life, while lampooning old spy tropes and such. Then, later in the series, you maybe get into aspects of identity, how our choices define us, etc. But I knew that what it definitely needed was a tongue-in-cheek approach.

What I got was a pretty self-serious, generic spy thriller.

Shame.

I watched the finale of Six Feet Under a few days ago. I can't remember when I stopped watching it (
I think it was before whats-his-name died
). Fantastic ending, I had no connection to any of the characters but it almost made me cry. I was still bummed out about it yesterday.

Is the pilot episode of Supernatural a good representation of the show?

Just watched the last two episodes of Walking Dead season 3. What a fucking great show. After s2 I wasn't so sure but s3... my god. Now I have to wait another year until s4 hits netflix :(

now come the spoilers:

dat episode 4 man. jesus christ I felt so shit after that one. you don't expect that sort of shit so early in the season, hit me hard man. this was a great season that remained tense throughout. the finale was a bit dragged out but I'm not really complaining. Last episode was very satisfying and Merle as a Walker looked great. Poor Andrea :( she was stupid but still.

Why didn't Martinez shoot the Gov though, jesus that would have been the time. You could tell he wasn't so fond of him why not finish him.

And very interesting seeing Carl's development. Hershel remains boss and Maggie is hot as ever.

7 episodes into season 6 of The Sopranos. Knowing what it is about the ending that made people upset, seeing the "foreshadowing" in some lines and shots is hilarious.

I mean, AJ literally said:
: "Anthony Soprano isn't going to die, I don't know what everyone is talking about."

Just finished season 1 of Justified. I was about to give it up after the first few episodes, especially the terrible, terrible third episode. I was never a big fan Olyphant and
there wasn't much of Walton Goggins to be seen at first
but I'm glad I continued watching, because the second half of the season is totally the opposite with a bombastic finale. But goddamn that first half was horseshit.

Do keep watching. Goggins pretty much becomes the co-main character, and the dialogue gets more and more playful and tightly written as the show goes on.

I really liked Derek from Netflix/Channel 4. I went in thinking it would be a straight up comedy and I was blindsided by the fact that it's actually something completely different. I never expected something so sincere and moving from Ricky Gervais.

The comedy bits honestly aren't that funny, outside of episode 5 which I thought was hilarious, but man, those tearjerker moments really got me. They especially hit hard if you know someone who lives/lived in a nursing home or just know old people in general. The nursing home moments felt so real; so honest and tender and sad. They do try to force more and more of those moments as the season progresses, which is a bummer, but they really worked for me for the first 2/3 of the season.

Another problem that I had, outside of the show having one too many Coldplay montages (I'll be happy if I never have to experience 'Fix You' played to a collection of sad/moving/inspiring scenes ever again) is that the show often tries to force the notion that Derek is some sort of angelic unicorn of saccharine kindness. Like, it's evident that he's a very kind and caring person, and it's evident that people love and appreciate him, but there's no reason for the characters to continuously go on and on and on and on and on reminding us how awesome he is. We get it, there's no need to beat us over the head with it.

Just watched the first episode of Netflix's Hemlock Grove. Good god, the acting and writing are so. bad! Famke Janssen's accent is the most over the top ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Oh my god.

So has anyone else watched Alpha House (Amazon Prime exclusive)? It's kinda stupid, but I found it enjoyable enough to plow through all three episodes. Think House of Cards but with Republicans and more comedy oriented. I think it helps that I'm anxious for HoC S2 and the Washington DC setting kind of filled that hole in the meantime.

Watching the first season of The Killing, up to episode 9. At first I kind of liked it, now it is just testing my patience.

Edit: Finished episode 9. Are you fucking kidding me? I don't think I can take another four episodes of this shit.

Finished it. The campy charm I thought was there in the first episode turned out to be just an illusion; outside of a few hilariously awful moments here and there, the show is otherwise devoid of any redeeming qualities.

It's not scary in the slightest (and I consider myself to be pretty sensitive to that sort of thing), it's never intentionally funny, nothing that happens* ever makes any sense (including the dialog and character interactions), no one in the cast has has any chemistry with anyone else in the cast, the accents are horrendous (Bill Skarsgård's accent is all over the place and Famke Janssesn's British (?) accent is one of the worst I've ever heard), and there's very little action and sex, which, in the absence of compelling storytelling and characterization, might have at least served to provide a base level of entertainment that was otherwise absent. But alas.

*Not that anything really ever does happen; this show is the very definition of plodding.

There really is no reason to watch this show.

Finally getting around to Damages Season 5. I was waiting for it to show up on Netflix and when it finally did I didn't have a chance to watch it. Anyway, 8 episodes in now. Very entertained. Excited and nervous to see how this thing finishes out.

I just finished watching a gay series on Netflix called 'DTLA'. It's about a group of gay friends and their relationship drama, but it was actually pretty decent (and somewhat addictive) despite:

having some pretty spotty acting. Some of the actors did a good job (main black guy, asian guy, white girl with big teeth) and some of the actors were fucking awful. The scene in the final episode where
the lesbian is drunk calling her friends' ex while one handedly playing with a Gamecube controller contains some of the worst acting I've ever seen in anything ever.

having extremely trite writing, poor editing, amateurish direction, and just an overall lack of polish.

On the plus side, there's a lot of nudity (although some of it is bizarrely censored - like, in one scene you'll see a guy's dick and in the next scene another guys' will be blurred out) and some really hot sex scenes.

Anyway, it's worth watching if only to tide you over until HBO's Looking premieres on January 19 at 10:30/9:30c.

Band of Brothers

*tears* Still the best war show ever. So good. Episodes 6-9 are my favourites.

30 Rock

After the first season or two I was about to give it up, but it gets really good after that. Enjoyed it very much.
