After. Vaati already did a first lore video on DS2, worth watching.

Oh thats nice, I hate precuels.

I wonder if your DS1 ending somewhat affects your DS2 play since I decided to not lift the fire.

Yes, if you tell Laurentius where you learned your advanced pyromancy, he goes to Blighttown in search of it, and ends up hollow.

I always tell him no, even if I don't need his services because he's such a nice fellow.

Oh damm, I tell him yes too

Making steady progress on my sl1 run (haven't died once to a boss so far, kellogg done), but unexpected stuff happened. After Kellogg I joined the chaos covenant for the spell, then returned to firelink to upgrade my glove further. Laurentius asked a question I skipped through and answered 'yes' to. This made him leave for B'town in search of those spells, but I didn't know he was gonna aggro me. I thought I caused this, so I hurried back to Oswald for pardoning, but I hadn't sinned. Apparently he's meant to go hollow, can't be helped. Then I remembered Eingyi is a trainer too, so thank god. Sucks not having anyone at firelink til I get the thing to +15 though.

Yeah I know that now, I was in a hurry to upgrade :(

Also learned something new during the Jeff Green stream yesterday: Patches can show up before tomb of the giants? I always did catacombs + totg post Anor Londo, but apparently he shows up in the catacombs and trolls the shit out of you with the bridge. Still new stuff to see...

In all my playthroughs, I've never had this happen. And I'll do Cata before Anor Londo sometimes. But usually I take shortcuts down I guess. Never had the circumstances line up for him to show up there, even when I do take the conventional path.

Hey guys, can anyone help me troubleshoot why I can no longer run Dark Souls on my PC? I played it when it released on Steam from beginning to end with DSfix so I know it works... But now when I try to reinstall it, it's a shoddy mess: Only works half the time.. The other half it's either hanging and I have to end the process, or it loads but I can't click anything in the window, or nothing happens at all.

This isn't even taking into account DSfix 2.2, which makes it unable to even load up... The process is active, but no window is ever created. I'm definitely not going to play vanilla Dark Souls after having experienced the glory of DSfix once before... :/ Any thoughts?

My system specs are as follows:
i5 2500k 3.4ghz
Radeon HD 7970
16GB DDR3

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling DS, uninstalling and reinstalling GFWL - which I think is the culprit, because every time I do an integrity check for Dark Souls one file comes up missing or in error, and the next time I play it it tries to redownload GFWL Redistributable... Even though I've already downloaded and installed the most recent one from Microsoft's web site.... Tried reinstalling everything in different orders, checked various Steam community threads with step by step guides for how to get it working... I just can't seem to catch a break. GFWL is making me want to punch something.

If someone can help me or point me in the right direction I would be immensely grateful.

You should try disabling Windows DEP and telling me what happens.

Run Command Prompt as administrator and enter

Code:
bcdedit /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

Also, it's normal for the game to start and for it to take a bit for the window to actually appear, and then take a bit longer for it to actually load and start going.

Well I did what you said and tried to boot up Dark Souls again... It loads up, window appears, but what's odd - and this has happened before - is that my cursor becomes the loading circle when hovering over the Dark Souls window. Not only that, but I can't even select or deselect the Dark Souls window, not inside it nor anywhere on the Title bar. It's like input cuts off for it and it alone, even though the game loads to the Start screen and I can clearly see it. And this is after having waited 5+ minutes. :/

Also, I'm using Windows 7 64-bit with all current updates.

Sorry I forgot to mention you should also reboot after doing the thing I mentioned.

Are you in windowed or fullscreen mode? Also, if windowed, is it borderless is regular?

If you can't click on the window (that happens to me at times as well) you could also try pressing Alt+Tab to select the Dark Souls window and see if it will recognize your controller then.

I restarted, and still no dice. The game boots up in windowed, regular. And I can't alt + tab to it and it actually register being selected. I can tab through my windows and hold over Dark Souls and it pops up just fine, but letting go which should select that window does nothing.

Not using a controller at the moment either, just trying to get the game booted, much less playable lol. However, I have been using a DualShock4 with Metal Gear Rising and planned to use it for Dark Souls. It's currently not active, but do you think that being in my Devices & Printers is affecting anything? I can remove it if need be and reconnect it later.

And also, that thing I disabled earlier, Windows DEP, what is that exactly? lol I should have asked before disabling it, but I trust in GAF. And if I need to, how do I re-enable it through the cmd prompt?

It's Windows DEP, which is Data Execution Prevention. If you're the type who is careful with what they install on their PC it's basically a non-issue. But if you want to reenable, you can use the same command except swap "off" for "on"

Code:
bcdedit /set {current} nx AlwaysOn

Dark Souls only recognizes the first controller as the input, so that could very well be the case.

I remember I had a Wii remote connected to my PC through bluetooth and couldn't play Dark Souls for days because I couldn't figure it out.

I'd ensure that your desired controller is the only one that Windows recognizes as connected, then trying to see if you can control the game with the controller while it's selected but still in that unclickable state.

As a last measure, if you can't get any of it to work, you can go to

Code:
C:\Users\*Your Username*\AppData\Local\NBGI\DarkSouls\DarkSouls.ini

And modify that file to run in fullscreen which might rectify your issues.

To do so, just change the "Window mode" from either 0 to 1, or 1 to 0 (I don't remember which exactly represents which.

I'd also make sure that DisplaySettingFullscreen had your proper resolution inputted so that when you launch the game it'll display in full screen at your screens native resolution.

Cool, thanks for the command! I am indeed pretty careful, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Well, progress! I went to the Dark Souls .ini file and made it boot in full screen at my native resolution, as well as turning on my DualShock 4. It worked like a charm two separate instances. I wanna say it was the controller being connected in my Devices & Printers but not being turned on that caused the input mixups. However, once I'm inside Dark Souls, I cannot tab out or alt + f4.. Even opening up Task Manager is a temporary thing, as Dark Souls takes over again and puts itself back on top. So the only option is to exit from the main menu. Which isn't altogether that big of a deal, but still cumbersome.

I too had an issue occur with a Wii Remote connected that caused me days of headaches for another game. Hadn't thought of the similar circumstance here until you mentioned something.

Well that solves one problem. I'm almost afraid to throw DSfix on there cause I'm fairly certain it will break it lol.

Hearing your problems, none of them sound like DSfix should make them worse so I'd say absolutely go for it!

If there are whacky problems with it, post your DSFix.ini file and I'll take a look to see if anything seems out of whack.

Yeah, same problem as earlier tonight... I put dsfix folder, dsfix.ini and the dinput8.dll in my Dark Souls DATA folder, then start Dark souls only to find that DATA.exe and DARKSOULS.exe both show up under Processes in the Task Manager, but no window appears and they're not active under Applications. Hm... I used DSfix back when it first came out and ramped up my internal resolution a bit and downsampled, but I don't recall many other changes. There are a lot more options now, I'm guessing one of them are messing me up. How can I get my DSfix.ini file to you?

How long do you wait before you see if anything comes up? I know that personally I've had times where it felt like it wasn't going to boot and then after some time it did. Under a minute.

Another thing that I've had happen in the past is that it just wouldn't actually launch until I logged out and then logged back in to Steam so I'd try that as well.

You could PM it to me in code tags.

Alright, restarted Steam and waited several minutes. One thing I notice is that DATA.exe never uses any more memory than it starts with. So that makes me think that something in DSfix.ini is stopping it from fully launching.

I'll PM you the .ini file. Gimme just a sec.

Ooh things are going smooth on the sl1 run. Sif down on third try. My pyro + dragoncrest ring + dusk crown is starting to do decent damage. This run puts things in perspective: if you know the game a bit, sl doesn't matter that much.

I have a +10 reinf. club now, but if I want to max it out, it's better to go elemental right, since scaling doesn't matter? I was thinking of FIYA

I suggest lightning. Maybe Chaos because that will scale with humanity and does more damage than fire.

Lightning at first, since it's much easier to make that. Remember to grab the Slab from the Stray Demon. Later you could make both, but there are very few bosses resistant to Lightning, and with high Pyromancy, Fire/Chaos is kind of redundant.

I've had patches show up in the catacombs a few times, not sure what triggers it though.
you have to go to catacombs either before rhea shows up in firelink with her buddies, or if they do show up....dont exhaust their dialogue....as long as you go down before rhea patches shows up in the combs...obviously answer no to cleric, and always let him manhandle you. The one question in the tomb or combs alike that is counter intuitive is to NOT forgive him the first time he asks forgivness...this nets you an extra humanity.

this has been confirmed to work for me, but take with grain of salt as my beautiful hardcover guide that I got this from originally was made at release and there have been nerfings and patches ////no pun intneded! :p

if you are hit and miss, one thing I noticed I can NOT do while loading is input any device..not even move the mouse.....it will either extend the load or freeze completely. I never have any probs if I just dont touch anything! weird I know.

Well I discovered the underlying cause of DSfix 2.2 not working for me last night. I had no need for DSfixKey.ini so I left it in the .rar... To have a fully working DSfix 2.2, you have to extract it as well as the DINPUT8.dll, DSfix.ini, and the dsfix folder to your DATA directory, or else when you launch Dark Souls, it simply hangs. Guessing because the DINPUT8.dll requires DSfixKey.ini to be present in the directory or it just stops.

Needless to say, when I randomly thought "what the fuck, why not" and dragged/dropped it over and Dark Souls miraculously booted up, I facepalmed. So if anyone else finds themselves in a predicament like my own, try doing that.

Guys... I feel so damn dirty...

I'm doing a SL1 run, and I've reached Fatty&Slim....I have a lightning battle axe...and while taking out S is easy, O is just too resistant to lightning damage.
So I went back to the catacombs to get a fire weapon...

But...on the way back it occurred to me...I have Havels gear.. and I'm level 1...and I remember reading here on GAF someone spreading terror and fear on the Undead Burg with Havels set.

I had 4 cracking red eye orbs...and I didn't resist.

Guys...I know it's dirty...but it was so damn fun. I had never invaded low level players in Dark Souls since I don't really do PVP.
Players were literally running and trying to hide...and I just walked towards them slowly, I didn't even run, because Havel doesn't fucking run. He walks towards you and you simply piss yourself, that's how Havel rolls.

When I first met Havel in Dark Souls..I ran for my life...I shat my pants and ran for my life...but now...now it was the other way around.

No more spreading the terror since I don't have any more orbs, but it was a fun little break from the hard fight that awaits me in Anor Londo! Back to the SL1 run !

dksoulsinvasion2.jpg

Oh, don't worry, after you kill O&S and choose to kill the 4K without first placing the Lord Vessel, you can do this all day and night, just grind 30 Humanity for the pleasure. :)

Full Havel's or Full Black Iron Armor (fully upgraded is best in case of gank squads and summons), and just roll in to the Undead Church with Great Combustion/Toxic Mist w/ fully +5 Ascended Pyro Flame (stock up on tons of Dung Pies and Poison Knives, as well as Prism Stones for the lulz). Roll a Giant Blacksmith Hammer +5, Lightning Reinforced Club +5, Fire Reinforced Club +10, and +15 Hand Axe (or Reinforced Club or both). And just rain down hell as the demon of the church!

Also, buying two Cestus and fulling upgrading one to +5 Lightning and the other to +10 Fire, can be hilarious against noobs and pro's in PvP alike. Especially if you've now mastered off targeting and re-targeting and parrying and using the kick to play countless mind games. :p

Hey guys.

So I'm in NG+, running around as human in Anor Londo fighting invaders. Then this guy is summoned in to my world... even though I didn't touch a single summon sign. I banish him, he comes back. Banish him again.

Then he comes back, apparently killed the fire keeper (I got a firekeeper soul), and when I see him he's not even a phantom! He backstabs me and chugs some estus right after.

I understand this must be some kind of hack/mod, but like... what the heck? Is my save gonna be screwed up now?

Sounds like a hacker. You won't be having that firekeeper back.

If you're using DSFix, you may have the save backup feature enabled which could save your ass on this one.

If not, you could use Cheat Engine to bring the firekeeper back to life and restore things back to how they were.

I haven't played this since around the time it came out. I just did Taurus Demon and I've got a bunch of souls and I'm not sure where to spread them as I level up. I remember not going over certain thresholds like 30 endurance or something like that, I don't remember

I've already played through a few times with separate magic/pyro/faith users. Now I wanna play a bit more honest, so to speak with a sword and shield and no magic at all. How should I allocate my stats?

First decide if you want tot use strenght or dex weapons. Then level one of them up. The higher your strenght or dex the higher your scaling will be. Endurance stops giving stamina after 40 but still gives equipment load after that. But that's only use full if you're planning to use heavy armor while still maintaining a fast roll.

Yeah that was it. So pumping points into strength is fine? I remember there not being much point because elemental weapons were so good and required no point investment.

The second half of the game was a bit of a letdown for me, but the DLC totally redeemed it. I highly recommend getting it.

The DLC adds some new areas, more depth to the story and some very cool bossbattles. If you are liking the game so far it is worrth buying for sure.

Is Pinwheel supposed to be a minor boss or something? Dude went down like a bitch in literally around five blows. For some reason the flaming dude in the demon ruins who looks like the Asylum Demon gave me a ton of trouble but the centipede was much easier. And why was there so little space between them?

There are certain bosses, like Pinwheel, that are weak for lore reasons. Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith was a rushed area at the end of development, and it shows.

Yes, a plus 15 weapon with high stats will out damage everything elemental.

Awesome. The game is actually kind of difficult without any magic lol. I picked the pendant for shits and giggles so no Lightning Resin. The Gargoyle battle ended up being pretty painful because of that. The two traded fire breath duty non-stop, took forever to isolate one. Onto my good friend Capra Demon now
