Xbox One and Machinima: Be nice or neutral, and don't tell anyone we're paying you

I honestly don't get the uproar about this. Someone explain to me what the difference between this and, for example, paying for celebrity endorsement is?

Because they are not allowed to tell what they are saying is a paid advert by MS.

It will be portrayed as opinion when it's actual a paid for advert, also known as a lie.

I don't see the problem with this. All Microsoft is doing is paying and supporting the content creators supporting them. If other content creators who aren't fond of the Xbox Brand, decide to jump aboard and sell out on their personal beliefs for money, that's their fault and Microsoft's gain.

Just like any business contract, which this is, by the way, you aren't legally allowed to discuss the terms, conditions, or what you receive from it, so whatever.

The "you can't be negative about the Xbox One and it must be relevant" part also makes sense, why would the support you trashing their product? Besides, it's necessary. You already saw some posts on GAF discuss loopholes and ways to get money from Microsoft without doing anything. "Put it at the end of a totally unrelated video! Make a video discussing this bullshit and make money since it's about the Xbox One! Tall badly about the Xbox One and tag the video so you get paid!"

Can't blame Microsoft.

As a content creator and YouTuber myself, my channel is already practically a Xbox only channel (thanks Sony for making it so hard and BS to capture PS3 footage! And thanks even more for not allowing PS4 footage at all!), so I'm just getting paid for doing what I already do, I don't see the negative. Microsoft is just supporting those supporting them.

I know you're being sarcastic, and the hidden tag is hilarious, but seriously I sort of agree.

Knew It was only a matter of time before you popped in here to defend this.

I knew someone that was in advertising, and the tin foil hatters aren't tin foiley enough! Marketing is embedded everywhere. They have gotten smart, and have people working their angles slowly in forums, and places like Reddit (this one a little bit more obvious).

Does this happen for Nintendo and Sony as well? I mostly see MS shill accusations, but I'm assuming that's because Sony has the more popular console currently and Nintendo is assumed dead by many here.

Just in case anyone missed this little gem from the official FTC document on this subject:

I threw in Example 8 as well to demonstrate that MS has absolutely no problem with violating FTC rules with the amount of fucking shills they throw at this place.

I'm really starting to hope that this is their last console.

Well I'll be damned... I had no idea forums were covered under such rules.

How long before MS releases a statement disavowing all knowledge of this and chalking this up to a misguided PR firm led marketing campaign?

I haven't watched much Joe but in the few epodes I caught around E3 he had a giant Superman logo chilling in the background and that was right around when the movie was coming out. What was that about?

he's been a huge superman fanboy since he started, when he was too small to have any companies bothering to pay him for anything like that.

Aren't we piling on Microsoft for simply playing the system too well?

Yes this deal is gross, but isn't it the case that Machinema and other popular YouTube accounts actively facilitate this kind of scummy behaviour?

It's easy to criticise Microsoft (I do it all the time), but I think what's more important here is this news shatters the illusion that YouTube gaming channels like Machinema provide a more credible or authentic type of games coverage than the regular gaming press.

Their NDA outlining the specifics of this scummy campaign is pasted at the beginning of this thread and all over gaming news sites and blogs. I'm pretty sure they aren't playing the system too well. I'd probably use the word clumsily.

Hm... I would have thought the fuck ups coming from Microsoft would have stopped last year.

They seriously can't handle the return of the King, can they?

Man, my sister just got back from NY, and I was disappointed in your notes. The designs are not bad, but they feel like monopoly money, and there's barely any difference between the $100 bill and $1 bill. In the UK the £50 note is a fair degree larger than the other notes.

Our £20 vs your $20.

Gotta go with the $50 and $100 dollar bills for the bling.

Okay, if you really insist
My fellow robogamers, I'm here to spread the good word of our Lord and Saviour, Xbox One. Can I get an Amen?

Wow...this is insane, Microsoft this may seem like a good idea on paper but in actuality it's nothing but negative press for you. I get it, Sony has been kicking your butt but this is ludicrous. Do you know how to solve this problem Microsoft? You make great games! You wouldn't even need a PR scheme like this if you made great games!

You know shits serious when I'm hating on Microsoft, heck I even supported them on the DRM stuff cause I knew that it would turn out to be a steam like eco system. Heck, I'll disclose that I even have Microsoft Stock(shocker, I think everybody new that already). but hot damn this is fucking stupid. Put that money towards making good games that I can play and will attract consumers and create brand loyalty. Crap like this is just gona piss people off.

What's the problem with being paid for saying good things about the console? That's how advertisement goes. Microsoft trying to make the advertisement pass as an honest "gamer to gamer" opinion is dumb.

Must be a pain to fit in your wallets. The top of the bills constantly sticking out.

There's no easy fix to the gaming industry's problem.

Publishers (magazines, websites, etc.) preview and review games while producers (publishers, developers, etc.) control access to the games. Writers will lose their audience without timely coverage - something they can only get if they keep game makers happy.

Rock, meet hard place.
I think this has been grossly overstated.
Plenty of writers, bloggers and sites have built up a subscriber base and reputation based entirely off of coverage of titles that happens post-release and after it's widely available by the general public.

The "I have to have an opinion to share on Day 1 so give me access to the game 3 weeks early" crowd? I'm not putting much stock in what they have to say regardless.

I work in advertising tech. I have a friend who works at a major publication and his job is to come up with editorial content for companies that don't want to do straight up advertising. Advertising is a dodgy business. Best to be on your guard.

Between this and bullying indie devs so that PS4 users will suffer a software drought. Fuuuuuuuuuuck them.
I'm really starting to hope that this is their last console.
Indeed. But it won't since Titanfall is going to sell a kajillion consoles.

They just totally shot themselves in the foot with this one. Accusations are going to be flying at them constantly now and there's nothing they can do to defend themselves anymore.

It would be fine if the youtubers disclosed that they were being paid to do so.

Oh okay, so that makes this a non issue, besides it being scummy?

? I said it was gross, never said its a non issue.

I was just responding to some people jumping to illegal- which it might end up being. I'm not an expert in this field of law, but I do have faith in their legal team. A discussion on legality doesn't preclude condemnation of the practice.

Despicable. But I imagine most major media outlets are this way in the game industry. It's good that there are leaks. Hope the FTC starts cracking down on MS, Sony and Nintendo for such BS.

I wonder how many "marketeers" has Microsoft hidden in Neogaf.

From what mods have commented on, there were a bunch in the last two junior intakes. It must have been like Whack-A-Mole during contentious news times during last year for them.

Unless they have larger wallets..

But back on topic, Is there a worse way to spend $3750 than this? We may be talking about Xbox One, but I don't think it is what MS had in mind.
