Xbox One and Machinima: Be nice or neutral, and don't tell anyone we're paying you

Jesus Christ, and I thought MS had gotten past all these blunders...

Even though this is likely the fault of one of their external ad agencies, the fuck ups seem to never end

What's the problem with being paid for saying good things about the console? That's how advertisement goes. Microsoft trying to make the advertisement pass as an honest "gamer to gamer" opinion is dumb.

Contract says you can't say you were paid, thus breaking a load of laws.

I am legitimately shocked...

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
I have FAITH in their legal team to draft a legal contract.

Thats all I was saying. You're bringing other connotations to my post, and I can't help you there.

Considering your posting history and constant defense of the XBO / MS whenever you have the chance its no wonder why folks question your motives.

Thats the second time now you dropped this. Next time Im gonna ebay this piece of plastic without giving it back.

:D

Jokes aside once again, back to enjoying my morning coffee and watching the shitstorm roll on.

Disclosure.

If you are clear you are being paid to praise an item would you trust that person's opinion?

This is not OK Microsoft.

I'm constantly amazed at the ability of well-educated people to make horrendous decisions. The upside of this is minimal, the downside is a (metaphorical) kick in the balls by the FCC.

I previously was giving a MS a pass until this nugget of info was revealed. I think this is a travesty and a disgrace.

Goes home, fires up the Xbox ONE, plays Titanfall alpha. "MS all is forgiven."

You ever get the feeling that this will backfire horribly for them and most Youtubers will just avoid saying positive things to keep their credibility?

naw the opposite will happen

If I can give my 3 bucks, what this obviously means is that the Microsoft Xbox One video game console is so wildly successful and profitable that the Microsoft Corporation is giving away money as a reward for their most loyal and honest customers.

Not fair or accurate, I've been pretty down on the Bone since I got it, but whatever

"We'll pay you $50 per video if you play Xbox One games, visibly munch on Doritos and Mountain Dew (bonus dollars if you show those logos!) and speak positively about the products in general. What could be easier!?"

Does this happen for Nintendo and Sony as well? I mostly see MS shill accusations, but I'm assuming that's because Sony has the more popular console currently and Nintendo is assumed dead by many here.

I don't know enough about video game companies to answer that. But I just know what big companies do in general. My gut tells me Sony does it (I don't mean this YouTube deal). People tend to want to love a company. And there is nothing wrong with that. But make no mistake, they aren't there to be your friend, their first goal is money. And so, most companies are probably using advertising tactics you wouldn't like if you knew about it.

That said, this feels scummy. I don't think we've ever heard of a major company doing this on YouTube (with regards to gaming and the stipulations in the contract)...that we knew of. So MS deserves to be called out regardless if others were doing it and we didn't know about it. A company shouldn't get a free pass for being unethical because other companies are unethical too. Plus we can only focus on what we know.

Now, if other companies got caught doing the same thing, then yes they deserve the same criticism as Microsoft.

Hey guys are you forgetting something?

This is Arstechnica!

You remember that website? The one that we as gamers should NEVER EVER take seriously?

Hah, this is biblically stupid.

Apart from this being morally wrong, why the hell would you risk tainting any genuine positive coverage you might have gotten in the process?

? I said it was gross, never said its a non issue.

I was just responding to some people jumping to illegal- which it might end up being. I'm not an expert in this field of law, but I do have faith in their legal team. A discussion on legality doesn't preclude condemnation of the practice.

You keep coming back to that word "faith"... in what exactly? What do you have "faith" in the legal team accomplishing? Not getting sued by the FTC? I honestly think legal matters are the least of their worries at this point in time, considering the proper condemnation they are getting at the moment.

Did you not even read the article? This deal has been floating the web since last week, way before major publishers picked it up as news.

Yes, thats exactly what I'm saying. Why can't you separate the legal argument? Why do you keep putting words into my mouth?

I can't condemn the practice enough for you to understand what Im saying.
