News of the new 160gb PS3 deserves it's own thread. Also news is that it is bundled with uncharted. And no PS2 backwards compatibility.

SCE America Announces Limited-Edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Bundle Featuring New 160GB PS3
PS3 Bundle Includes Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, PLAYSTATION Network Voucher for PAIN and DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller, Offering Tremendous Value to Consumers.

August 20, 2008 - Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced plans to introduce a new 160GB PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system in North America as part of the limited-edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM) PS3 system bundle. The increased storage size enables entertainment enthusiasts to store even more movies, television shows, and games downloaded from PLAYSTATION(R)Network, as well as more videos, music, and photos from their personal collection. Slated to launch in November for $499.99 (MSRP), the 160GB PS3 system will come bundled with the hit game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM), a PLAYSTATION Network voucher for PAIN, and a DUALSHOCK(R)3 wireless controller. The previously announced 80GB PS3 system ($399.99 MSRP) has started shipping to retailers.

"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."

The Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3 bundle includes the following components:

-- 160GB PS3 system -- The 160GB PS3 is a complete entertainment system comprising a Blu-ray(TM) Disc player, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, and Cell Broadband Engine(TM).

-- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune -- A 400-year-old clue found in the coffin of Sir Francis Drake sets a modern-day fortune hunter, Nathan Drake, on an exploration for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, leading to the discovery of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The search turns deadly when Drake becomes stranded on the island and hunted by mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island.

-- PAIN PLAYSTATION Network Voucher* -- PAIN boldly tackles a rarely explored area of video-gaming ... comedy. The unique mechanic of the game allows the player to load a character into a human-sized, ultra-powerful slingshot, and fire the character into an active, physics-controlled environment, filled with precarious and humorous situations. Download PAIN from PLAYSTATION Store (http://store.playstation.com) to your PS3 system with the included voucher.

-- DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller -- DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller provides the most intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive SIXAXIS(TM) motion sensing technology.

The additional storage space of the 160GB model will benefit consumers, as several highly anticipated PLAYSTATION Network and PS3 games along with add-on content will be available for download soon, including PAIN Amusement Park, Ratchet & Clank(R)Future: Quest for Booty(TM), SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, and The Last Guy(TM). The bundle is also a great option for consumers who want to utilize PLAYSTATION Network's video delivery service, which offers new blockbuster movies and popular TV shows for download on an ongoing basis.

PS3 momentum has soared in 2008, starting with Blu-ray becoming the high-definition standard and following the launches of key franchise titles, including Gran Turismo(TM) 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto(TM) IV, and Metal Gear Solid(R)4: Guns of the Patriots. That momentum will continue into the holidays and beyond, as PS3's software lineup will offer the most depth and breadth of any platform across the industry, delivering highly anticipated exclusives such as BUZZ!(TM): Quiz TV, LittleBigPlanet(TM), Resistance(TM) 2, MotorStorm(TM) Pacific Rift, and Killzone(TM) 2.

MOAR UNCHARTED!!!!

EDIT: I think it's silly to bundle with old games, though. I think bundling with new games makes more sense, but wtv. Maybe Uncharted didn't sell as well as expected or something.

And it still looks like the original 60 gig ps3 with a 160 gig hdd from newegg is the best way to go.

*hugs ps3*

Although...if you don't give a shit about backwards compatibility, this is a damn fine bundle.

Just when you thought they'd get down to one SKU...

Seems like a good deal if you want uncharted and/or don't want to mess with installing a new hard drive yourself, but otherwise seems like it's still better to buy an 80GB for 400 and upgrade the hard drive to something like a 250 or 320GB for roughly the same total price as this.

Ermac

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
What's the price on this? 500 I'm assuming?

Edit: Saw it

They are getting exposure for Uncharted so they can pimp the hell out of the sequel. It sold well, but not nearly aas well as it should have, fucking great game.

i find the lack of BC disturbing.

If you people stop buying PS2, then MAYBE we'll get to see BC on PS3. If PS2 doesn't want to rest, then you put it to rest, forcedly.

Until then, no BC for ya.

I thought it flopped badly but it sold really well with monster legs in Europe.

Didn't flop badly.

Sold decently, not as good as it should have, though.

I think total sales of Uncharted were about 400k by January, so total NPD sales of the game are probably at around 500-600k in North America.

In total, WW sales may be about 1.2 million or more, just by NPD, so shipment sales may be around 1.5 million or more.

You can buy sub $100 250-320 gb hdd now plus no bc is pretty shitty, glad i got my 80gb back in december.

Heck yeah.

You can get a 320GB hdd at newegg for around 100 bucks.

I'm about to grab a new hdd to upgrade my 60gb ps3. Make your own PS3 w/ a bigger hdd and BC if you want it.

If it's in a bundle, the game won't show up on NPD.

I'm still thinking software based BC for PS2 titles is coming. Obviously this bundle isn't anything that will make anyone trade in their existing console, but it may present a good value to some consumers that want a larger drive but don't want to mess with the relatively easy hassle of changing it out themselves.

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
$499 is way too expensive for this bundle, should be $449.99 with the new 80 gig one at $349.99

Not a terrible deal. You're essentially getting 80GB more of storage for $40 (taking into account that Uncharted is worth $60).

Of course if you're into setting up your own PS3, you'd probably be better off buying the new 80GB and putting your own bigger hard drive in.

Just wait...they'll release software BC...this is the first sign of that. They need to clear all hardware BC models before they can even think of releasing it.

Still $500 bundles for Holiday '08?! They should just pack in the awesome Uncharted and still sell at $400. At least that will tip customers away from jumping into 360 and Wii.

That's true, but why does showing up on NPD matter? I would think the only thing that matters was getting copies of the game to more people.

I wanna pick up a PS3 by the time LBP hits but this bundle doesn't appeal to me at all. $500 is way to much although I would like a HDD bigger than 40GB without buying a 3rd party one. Hopefully they'll have something better (and cheaper) this holiday.

Probably not since they're currently outselling the 360 at ridiculous prices

Umm you getting much more storage a DS3 and a game.

Yeah, I agree this is a great value considering the cost of the items seperately but I just question how this price point makes them competitive for the Holidays.
