2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

generally, how much of a trade off in cooling are we talking about when it comes to those 1.0 inch laptops vs something that's 1.5-2 inch

hey so with that new graphics card series announced
how long does it usually take for the initial price on laptops with that card to dip?

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
Damm those new laptops really took a leap in GPU power I'm so glad I haven't bought mine yet and still saving because now I'm fairly interested in getting the MSI GT70 Dominator-2293

Damn.

Isn't the 680m like ancient though?

Will you guys lower yourself to super budget office laptops? Just how bad is this? http://www.ebuyer.com/645880-lenovo-b50-laptop-mca28uk

Celeron 2815 CPU. Would just be for office 365 and chrome usage for my wife, although she does tend to have around 10 tabs open in chrome when working. Would also be driving two screens (external 1080p monitor plus laptop screen at the same time)

£169 is pretty damn tempting if it'll work ok

Better to buy from newegg or XoticPc?

Newegg is a bit cheaper and I can get the Square Trade warranty for like 75 for 3 years.

I suppose it should be fine for those uses.

What laptop are you talking about here?

So this one has an IPS display? If so, this is exactly what I want.

I don't know if the 1080p option is, but the 3K and 4K screens are IPS.

Any idea what Sager is gonna call it?

The MSI rep says at the end of the vid that you'll be able to upgrade to whatever we release next. Hopefully more companies follow suit, because that's awesome.

Noticed that as well and that's partially why that suck looks so attractive. It'll be interesting to see how many card generations are supported within a given laptop when you consider technological upgrades.

Kinda, but to be honest it's not like the 680MX/780M/880M were any better.

Hardly true. The 780m provided about a 35% performance boost and the 880m another 30% on top of that.

It's not a huge a leap as the 50% performance boost that the 980m is offering over last year's high end model in some cases but, honestly, that's the exception and not the norm.

Just ordered a 980m equipped machine for a tiny bit over $1700. Now I just need to sell my 880m rig which is identical to the new one I'm buying minus the GPU... It's been an expensive past few months.

Yeah...that is going to be a bit more of a pain if you want to upgrade the ram or repaste it yourself cause it will require removing the whole motherboard if I'm correct.

If you want to upgrade those in particular, then xoticpc seems to be the right thing, assuming you don't want to open up your new laptop day one, yourself ;)

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Do we know if the Razer Blade will see a 970M in the next month or so?

I have a 15" Retina MBP that I absolutely love - but I want to be able to play games on the road since I travel so much, and the 2GB 750M struggles a good deal.

My friend has the Razer 2014 with 870M 3GB, and it's juuuuuuust a bit too slow to play everything comfortably. It needs just a bit more juice; and I'd wager the 970 or 980 would be able to provide just that.

I'll get to updating the OP with everything new, probably tomorrow.

Still no news on the 960M, but it's expected to appear later this month.

OP is a Nvidia Intel fanboy. Mobile APUs are great mine runs everything fast including high End games.

Regarding the 980M...

Is it possible to upgrade a 780M in my Laptop to a 980M?

My laptop is a Skyfire III 17" from PCSpecialist. (Though I believe its based on a GT70 20C laptop)

I was under the impression they were soldered onto the board, but a video I was watching showed the card being removable.

Anyone kind enough to tell me about process of upgrading cards in laptops and anything I should be aware of?

Thanks

I'm crazily thinking about getting a new gaming laptop with a 970M - have any of the newly released laptops with that GPU been reviewed? I don't know much about the reputation of the laptop gaming brands (Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.)

I can't wait for the next generation of gaming laptops to come out. Biggest jumps I've seen in a long time.. however, not looking forward to the new price tag either.

Guys...guys...I'm so damn hyped for this.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152667

The price is so right (of course Canadian markup sucks). But man, I think I'm going to jump in. The SSD version is like $5-600 more, I'm not sure if that's really worth it though?

Also, this might be a dumb question to ask in a thread about performance laptops, but would the difference between the 970M and 980M be worth the $1000 price difference (although the one with the 980M has an SSD as well)?

Of the two I've owned so far, the Asus was the least reliable. Returned for repair 3 times, all because the GPU started artifacting in my games and eventually blue-screening and shutting down. Missed keystrokes while typing, even iffier touchpad than the MSI (although I won't judge a gaming laptop for its touchpad). Neat design though.

Meanwhile my MSI with the 570M (pretty old by now) is running strong with no problems. Everything works as intended, just sturdy and excellent all around. Took it on business trips and it's been rock solid then too. I probably wasted my money buying the extended warranty from newegg, in this case.

Of course if you search hard enough on the internet you'll most likely find someone with the exact opposite experience that I had. So I'm not sure if this is even helpful at all lol.

MSI is releasing the GT70 with the 970M, so your chances at upgrading seem pretty high, if the 970M heatsink fits on the 980M.

1. You should buy your own SSD, it'd be much cheaper.

2. Based on the GPU alone, a 30% difference is never worth $1k.

Thanks. And just to make sure, we're still at a point where 8GB of RAM is adequate enough right? My current laptop has 12GB and I'm not sure if that's really necessary. The model I linked has 8 and the next ones up have 16GB.

@K.Jack - This is a bit early for me to inquire about since one of the games hasn't revealed its requirements, but do you think the following customised The 17.3" Cosmos II would be a decent gaming laptop for running games such Metal Gear Solid V, Dark Souls & The Evil Within at 1080p & 60fps? I'm willing to upgrade a few components in the future but this is all I can afford right now:

17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
4GB RAM
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 850M - 2.0GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
480GB SSD

Yeah 8GB system RAM is still an absurd ammount.

I know for certain that MGS5 and TEW won't run 1080p/60fps on the 850M DDR3. The GDDR5 version wouldn't either, for that matter.

Does this mean I would need to reduce the graphics settings to medium or would it need probably run 720p/60fps on high settings?

Sorry for the numerous questions - I'm kind of new to all this.

I got pretty unlucky with ordering since I bought the 870M version of a Ghost Pro 3K on Monday afternoon not knowing a new version was coming literally 12 hours later. Fortunately, I was able to return it since I hadn't opened it.

I just got myself the MSI GS60 2QE Ghost Pro-046 3K w/ 970M that came out on Tuesday. I've had about 24 hours with it now and it's pretty awesome. I was upgrading from a Dell XPS 15 L502x that I got in 2011.

The best thing about this laptop? The keyboard and palm rest surface don't turn into a raging inferno like so many other gaming laptops do (I'm looking at you Razer). The left side gets a little warm, but not to the point that it's uncomfortable. By comparison, gaming on the Razer Blade 2013, my hands started sweating just using the keyboard. The underside still gets toasty, so gaming on your lap is not a great idea.

3K screen is gorgeous, no dead pixels that I can find so far. There's a little backlight bleed on the right edge, but that's not something that's ever particularly bothered me.

My primary complaint is that the speakers are weak. They just don't get loud enough to be able to hear dialogue reliably and clearly over the sound of the fans or the USB Blu-ray drive I plugged in. It's not a problem if you have headphones, but I currently use my laptop as a media player in bed at night so a little bit more volume would've been nice.

Ordered the MSI GS60 Pro with the 970m, didn't go 3k, as 1080p for a laptop on is perfect with me.

Would I say the 3K screen is worth paying extra for? Maybe not, but it sure is gorgeous. I'm sure I'll end up running games at 1080p anyways on it (and I can't even tell it's non-native res).

Before I made my purchase, I was able to check out one of the 1080p models at Fry's and it was still a really great looking screen. I originally only went for the 3K b/c it was the same price on Newegg as the 1080p one b/c of discounts, but that was the old model.

The Lenovo Y50 was a leading candidate for me for a while, but I read about the screen being horrible (even the 4K version since its limited to 48Hz) and I saw it in Fry's which completely knocked it out of contention for me.

I hope you enjoy your new laptop!

Well the desktop GTX 960 is expected to be announced later this month, so the 960M could be soon after.

Thanks. Just for future reference so I can upgrade later, can you please tell me what NVIDIA graphics card after the one I mentioned (GTX 850M) would most likely run the games at 1080p/60fps with High settings?

i seriously doubt you'll be able to upgrade the GPU in this laptop.

Yeah, you are correct - I would need to replace the chassis or motherboard (whatever that means) :( So, what should I do now? I don't want to do spend over £900 if that's possible.

If I want to play the games mentioned at 1080p/60fps with high settings on a 17 inch screen, what laptop and configuration would you recommend from PCSpecialist or any other UK Clevo reseller? I hope that's not asking too much of you.
