Tom Cruise is the only one I can think of. Have a ton of his movies and the guy is both a great actor (in the roles he plays) and entertaining.

Oh, well also The Rock. And maybe Arnold too. Both of those guys are entertaining as although I've skipped a few Arnie movies that seemed like duds.

Not saying Cruise has the depth of a Joaquin Phoenix, but he is talented at getting the proper performance for his roles. Also, I realize Rock is generally shallow, but man he is entertaining. Same with Arnold, lacks some depth but can he is always an asset and can carry a so-so movie.

Well of course I'll watch anything with James Hong or Kurt Russell. I mean when you were in the best film ever made, Big Trouble in Little China, of course I'll watch it. Of course I'd probably watch anything with Taimak or Julius J. Carry III since they were in the second best film ever made.

Tom Cruise was an obvious one I missed

I can't think of a bad Cruise movie tbh
Only outright bad one I can think of is The Mummy reboot. It made $400 million though, and I'm guessing it would have done 1/4 of that without Tom Cruise. He was the only good thing in the movie and made it somewhat bearable. Everything else about it sucked though.

Ah looking at the above posts, Mel Gibson almost fills this role too. I will literally watch almost any movie of his. Heck, I'll watch what he directs as well. Guy just has great charisma and screen presence, and of course he is a talented director as well. Even his performance in Pocahontas (which is my favorite Disney movie of al time) is solid - and while he is outmatched by his singing counterpart Judy Kuhn in the songs, he does an admirable job all things considered.

Christian Bale
For sure. The dedication that man has to his craft is insane. I couldn't believe the body transformation he's done for films like The Machinist and more recently Vice. He takes his job really seriously, and puts a lot of work and effort in to each role. It doesn't matter what it is. You don't see a lot of that, and it's nice to see.

The Machinist is an incredible film by the way, for anyone that hasn't seen it. It will really play on your mind, and has such a captivating storyline. One of my favourites.

Leonardo dicaprio chooses his role really well as does Tom cruise so even though I would not have thought I'd watch a movie based on an actor alone I'd have to say these two are highly likely to be in something worth watching.

I watched this movie. The next day my buddy asked me to describe why I didn't like and wanted to know the plot. After 24 hours I completely forgot the entire movie. No joke. Probably one of the worst movies I've ever watched. Unbelievably forgettable.

Toshiro Mifune.
Hell yea!

Yojimbo and Sanjuro are two movies in my top 20 of all time. Rashomon is a top 5 of all-time for me. Mifune just brings such an incredible presence to any movie he's in. On top of that, his collaboration with Kurosawa has to be the most critically/artistically successful Director-Actor duo in all of cinema. (The string of collaborations between Scorcese/De Niro from Mean Streets all the way to Casino comes close, but not quite.)

As for me, in addition to Mifune:

Dead/retired/actors no longer in their prime:
Betty Davis: My absolute favorite actress of all time, by a wide country mile. I joke to my friends that she's the "hottest ugly chick" in golden age Hollywood; she wasn't conventionally attractive, but her screen presence towered over almost anyone else. Also, she was exceptionally good at playing unappealing/troubled/evil/tortured characters. The best of the best.
Humphrey Bogart: If it was a 3-hour movie of nothing but tap dancing, I would still watch it if Humphrey Bogart was in it. Casablanca is amazing, but overrated. The Maltese Falcon is amazing, and underrated.
Robert De Niro: Practically everything he was in between Godfather Part II and Casino was amazing, and a lot of that was because of him. He started becoming a bit of a joke in his Meet the Parents stage in the late 90s, and hasn't quite recovered since. But anything in his prime, I would watch, no questions asked. Underrated absolute gem: The King of Comedy (1983).
Al Pacino: Same as De Niro but his prime ended a bit earlier; he had a dry spell in the 80s after Scarface, but came back in force with Godfather Part III and GlenGarry Glen Ross (I found Scent of a Woman to be overrated, and his "pity" Oscar, not to mention that it gave him his "HOO-HAH!" caricature that he hasn't recovered from, to this day)
Orson Welles: I like him better as a Director, but he was also really good as an actor. Watch Touch of Evil, and see what I mean.
Marcello Mastroianni: He's in two movies I really love, La Dolce Vita, and what is possibly my favorite film of all time, 8 1/2. I mean those movies are the sum of their parts, but one of those key parts is Mastroianni himself. I have a goal to watch more stuff with him going forward.
Daniel Day-Lewis: I first saw him in Gangs of New York as "Bill the Butcher" and he blew me away. Started watching his stuff in either direction (past works, and currently released movies). The guy is an absolute master at his craft.

Current actors:
Denzel Washington: Quite possibly the most [on-screen] charismatic actor in all of Hollywood today.
Adam Driver: I've seen a few movies he's in, and the guy has never let me down. Even in crappy Star Wars, to me he's the highlight of those movies. I was particular impressed with his work in The BlackkKlansman and especially Marriage Story).

LMAO my post is long enough, I think I'll stop there.

I think Taxi Driver is still my favourite De Niro role. He is masterful in that film, plus I love the 70's New York gritty vibe. It's a movie that really makes you think a whole lot.

Agreed on Taxi Driver.

Not only is a timeless movie, but it became the subject of conversation again a couple of years ago since Joker took such a heavy influence from it.

Also, hot take not directly related to the thread topic: The 70s were the last decade of truly great cinema.

I don't necessarily follow actors, but in terms of always delivering in a role I think the following are always a good bet (in no particular order)

Tom Cruise
Charlize Theron
Jake Gyllenhaal
Christian Bale
Amy Adams
Philip Seymour Hoffman (Rip)
Ryan Gosling
Benecio Del Toro
Hugh Jackman
Emma Stone
Regina King
James McVoy
Michael Fassbender

It has one of my favourite cameos by a director as well. I honestly had no idea it was Scorsese until a re-watch, he's unrecognisable and actually quite impressive. I wouldn't even call it a cameo, he's one of the best actors in the movie.

Early to mid 90's had some great movies as well. Great blockbusters and a lot of great dramas.

Probably Leo D.
I used to be a big fan of Christian Bale but after that rant leaked a decade ago I just, eh, fell off
Used to like Edward Norton a lot, but I just don't care anymore. Maybe it's his voice?
