My company does a lot of business all over Eastern Europe from Lithuania to Croatia and people are great, welcoming and determined. Then again business is business I guess.

Living in Berlin I have a soft spot for Eastern Europe anyway. The temperament is very close to home if I am allowed such generalization.

Budapest is one of the best places in the world.

Agreed. Though they don't consider themselves to be in Eastern Europe - they were very firm on saying they are in Central Europe.

I've only been to Hungary (Budapest, Eger, Ezstergom, Balaton, Godollo) but it was a beautiful and fascinating place with a very interesting history.

Every country has attractive people.
Sigh. I wish people wouldn't claim that countries of people have "sexy people". There are plenty of attractive people of any country and any race. And it isn't based upon what country someone is from.

I also try to avoid exotifying other cultures. Which I worry you might be doing.

I think it's an excuse to post hot chicks, looks like everyone in the thread ignored that.

No, I generally find it hard to enjoy my time when in eastern Europe, although there is definitely some nice scenery.

As an Eastern European, I find this region better-suited for short visits. Some nice places, nice women, good food. You can experience all that is worth experiencing in a week or two.

But living here? Not a lot of fun.

I'd love to visit Russia.. but the homophobia.. I think all the other former Soviet bloc countries are the same...

I'm really starting to like this HolyBaikal person. Isn't Baikal a lake in Russia?

I live in Czech Republic (just south of Poland) and OP is insanely misinformed.

This part of Europe sucks, people are too affected by communism and former Russian occupation. This is not an interesting place to live, work or do anything really. It has gotten better in last 20 years, but still, people move away from here to west all the time.

It is not absolutely horrible, but it is not interesting and mysterious at all. It may be for someone living in USA, but that is just because of the sheer distance. This is no North Korea, we hear news from Poland, Hungary, Ukraine all the time, there is no informatin enbargo or nothing like that.

Just corrupted politics, assholes and idiots all around. In major cities it is acceptable, it is west-like for tourists, but majority of the country is absolutely horrible.

I live in a small town few miles (never trust an european about miles) from the capial.

Trust me, I know what I am talking about.

I will not go into details about all that is terrible about this country, I will not write long about assholes from eastern Germany driving here to fuck few cheap prostitutes, corrupted politics and things like that, just please trust me. Nothing interesting to see here. If you want info, it is on the internet. We have democracy here, no internet censorship to be seen here.

Our politicians care about their wallets, not about internet. I am always amazed about how many laws and attention internet and things like video games (nudity, violence) gets in USA. No one cares here. No one.

Also, we do not create many smart, math oriented people. You just hear about them the most, because they are the only ones worth knowing about.

it is like implying, that all americans are fat from McDonalds and everyone in USA loves comic books and Superman. The people you hear about are just a small fraction of your population.

My guess would be, that the percentage of really smart people is about the same as i west.

most Eastern Europeans that I have met in Canada have a ''bipolar'' thing about their moods.

One day they are jovial, laughing, having fun and saying inappropriate politically incorrect jokes. Life of the party.

The next day they are moping, sad as hell, hate their job, no hope sinking in when in reality they have a normal good job and good life.

I'm from Romania and moved to America when I was young. I go back to visit and while the first few weeks are entrancing, after the initial rush wears off I can't wait to leave. It's a terrible country to live in, which is why many of my relatives and even people I grew up with all left to Spain/Italy/etc.

You gotta remember that from 1950 to 1990, Eastern Europe was like North Korea to the Americans. Some people from USA still think USSR is a thing, the mysterious nature of the unknown lives on and it's going to take a long time for entropy to hit.

I don't think this is a prevalent strereotype in the US.

That i bad, but understandable. 1989 is the year we rebelled against communism and finally created our democratic leadership. This year we had your fist direct peoples vote for president.

To be honest, people are SO MUCH affected by old way of life, that the ideals from 1989 went downhill from there. The Communist party is in top 5 and rising in the last 10 years.

Think about that.

Democratically voted.

Communist party.

This is absolutely insane to me and I plan to move out in next 10 years before it all falls into utter shit.

Well, that depends on the type of communist party. There are communist parties in Europe that just have the name for historical reasons but support democratic systems, and then there are "old-school" parties that actually want to establish a communist system in a country.

Is the Czech communist party of the latter kind?

Without education democracy really isn't worth shit.

They seem the first type, but they give strong impression of being the latter. They way they speak, act and talk amongs themselves is highly suspicious.

Also no matter the type, when a party calls themselves communist in 2013, they have to mean it. I mean if they did not share the ideals and did not support communism. If they were for keeping democracy and freedom of speech here, would they proudly call themselves communists?

I dont think so.

Yes, I do seem to notice this weird infatuation with the post-Communist bloc in Americans. And sure, come visit, there's cool people here (me obviously being one of them, lol), but the rampant xenophobia, racism, sexism, corruption, and provincialism will make most Westerners unfomfortable.

I'm Hungarian BTW, and really want to get out of here.

Well, yes and no I would say.

You can have the long-term goal of turning a country communist and still participate in what we so nicely call "Realpolitik" because you know it's a long way to go. A party of the latter type I described wouldn't be able to be part of an actual government, in my point of view. They would be more of a protest party.

If there's one government seemingly close to a fascist turnover, it's the Hungarian, at least that's what it looks like from my outside point of view. Could be media hyperbole, though.

They realize that in my opinion, the latter type in the sense you are describing are total utopists and would never achieve anything. That is not though how the communism was ever formed. Communism is also way of satysfying greed and getting absolute power. So yes, they are not totally in the thought of pure socialistic way, but in the way of muting peoples voices and getting power, as were all the communists, who actually achieved something.

What do you think of the perception that Czech women are really hot? I think this primarily stems from porn, where it seems every girl from there is at least an 8, but I understand that this population is not necessarily representative of the country as a whole.

Nope, it really feels like it sometimes, what with them taking power away from the Constitutional Court, writing and adopting a new Constitution entirely on their own, etc.

A recent story: Guy blows the whistle about massive tax fraud involving, among others, the government - guy's computers get confiscated.

There's definitely a "democracy deficit" here, as we call it, but the the more "everyday" problem, as far as I'm concerned, is that they're pushing our culture and society in a very reactionary, anti-Western direction. Government propaganda is effectively teaching people that the EU and the Western world are evil.

You're the ones who have horribly high wages, not the other way around.

? What do you mean, "not as a world power", what do you call the Soviet Union (and it's fascinating and rich history)? They were more of a world power than any other European country has ever and probably will ever be (unless we're counting ancient Rome/Greece, too).

West:
Greece
Rome
England
Germany
Spain
France

East:
Russia

The world has been influenced by more western European countries than eastern European countries I'd argue.

Not at all true. This is the same case as with the mathematically smart people. You just hear about them a lot.

A lot of girls idolize USA here and turn into porn to get there easily and get fame. And of course, only the prettiest make their goal.

Again - this is just a small percentage of the population you hear about.

Czech Republic is nothing out of ordinary. You have smart people, we do. You have dumb people, we go (oh my god we ho). You have beautiful people, we do. You have ugly people, we do as well.

I do think that, on average, Eastern European girls are prettier than Americans. Americans are less slutty and more fun to talk to though.

I dont thing we are prettier on average, but again as you cant speak for Eastern Europe, I cant speak for Americans as a whole.

PS Excuse my lack of apostrophes, they are pain in the ass to type on Czech keyboard and I am playing Vanquish as we speak :p

Really disappointed to read this. I thought Eastern Europeans were mostly really smart people hampered with shitty governments.

In the age of internet, smart people are no longer hampered by goverments. Anybody smart can make some money and in our age move away from the country. This no longer applies at all since we are part of European Union and have absolute right of free travelling and work to a certain extent in majority of Europe

This is completely not true in my experience. There are plenty of really, really conservative Eastern European girls, specially in the Balkans, Poland and Romania (although I'd consider PL and RO part of Central Europe). As for American ones... I'll just say that I owe 50% of my sex life to random girls I met when visiting the States (which is pretty sad when I think about it).

I meant the way they dress. I have heard that they tend to be easier, which I am eager to find out. Problem is, American guys are much better-looking than most Hungarians, myself included, so in the US girls tend to look through me, lol.
