Things aren't that bad in the place I live in in comparison to FunkyLounge, but I still want to move out (I'm from a larger Croatian city). This place really livens up in the summer when everyone is at the sea and when all the tourists come. Problems like high (and growing) unemployment rate, low wages, political corruption, abundance of old industrial plants, old infrastructure all over the place don't seem that obvious to folks who come by a few days because of great landscapes, large festivals, beautiful Adriatic sea/islands, hot women etc. but they're always there and it doesn't look like those problems are going away soon. That's why theres a sense among youth that with the same amount of effort we can accomplish much more in the West, and that, along with growing number of unemployed people is the main reason I wanna move out.
A Gaffer mentioned bipolar mood nature of EE people - that really depends on the place you take the examples from, but there sure is alot of people like that, especially in rural areas

As an Eastern European, I find this region better-suited for short visits. Some nice places, nice women, good food. You can experience all that is worth experiencing in a week or two.

But living here? Not a lot of fun.

This. I'm from Montenegro (if you like Croatia a lot of our coast is just like that), capital is a shithole and north is like from those horror movies about scary eastern europe (except skiing resorts and national parks) but yeah, if I wasn't well off I would have gotten the fuck out of this place at first chance. Even now I travel and gonna do my master's degree abroad because too much of this place is annoying.

P.S. That master degree I'll be doing in Warsaw, so I guess I'm staying in EE but that place was awesome few times I visited :)

Hmm, used to... But been to so much of it, it's now just kinda grey, miserable and ex-communitsy. You do get news if you read the right sites etc, mainly about how Russia hates gays and how pussy riot want to overthrow Putin.

So I'm guessing the declining birth rates in these countries are caused by emigration?

Yes. When you earn three or four times more in Western Europe for doing exactly the same job as here, while prices are now pretty much equal, it's no brainer to leave this shithole. And in Poland 2 millions in last 10 years thought the same. Why in this situation would you like to have kids?

Politicians only care about their wallets. The more you can steal, the better. Their family members hired with state paid jobs are like a plague. No matter which party wins elections, they all do exactly the same.

Current goverment criticised former one and was trying to spread the news to the whole world that people's freedom was in danger. What they did when they got the power? Well, one example of their blatant lies was when ABW (Polish intelligence agency) agents, armed, visited creator of anti-presidential website at 6 AM in his home and confiscated his laptop, hard drives and few other stuff. Is that the freedom current ruling party was shouting for just few years ago?

Madonna's concert funded by taxpayers. National stadium built for 600-700 millions (probably half of that was stolen). Every state investment = corruption. Shit is fucked up.

I would like to visit Western Europe one day such as England, France, Spain, Italy and perhaps Germany. Never Eastern Europe. Not after watching the movie Hostel and reading this thread...

If you visit Europe and skip Prague you fucked up. There are beautiful things there, don't let some dumb movie stop you.

Honestly yes, mostly because no one ever talks about them unless it's about the Soviet bloc or Dracula (the Transylvanian Alps being in Romania). That's why I'm hoping Euro Truck Simulator 2 will feature a Going Southeast! expansion.

A friend of mine was in Romania for 2 years in the Peace Corps. He just went back last month to work for another American who's starting some sort of factory/mill.

I visited for about a week when he was there 5 years ago, and it was pretty interesting. Towns like Sighisoara and Brasov are beautiful. I saw the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. Traveled all over. I wouldn't mind working hard, saving up, then going to a place like Romania and living well.

By the way, what do we even count as Eastern Europe? Simply everything to the East of Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, and Italy and south to Finland?

Because there's a hell lot of different definitions. I didn't even find a map on Wikipedia showing Eastern Europe under the rules I mentioned above.

There's this one according to UN geoscheme (blue = north, cyan = west, green = south, red = east):

500px-europe_subregiotie5b.png

Then there's this according to the CIA World Factbook, which also knows a Central Europe:

560px-eastern-europe-n6exp.png

And finally a version according to a German governmental name-finding association, including borders that aren't linked to country borders:

577px-grossgliederung8ufrp.png

I find all definitions to be quite weird, to be honest. The UN version has a weird definition of South and North Europe. If we're including Central Europe, I usually consider Benelux and France to be part of Central Europe (well, at least parts of France). Also, both the CIA and the German version actually have very little Eastern Europe to speak of.

But maybe living in the West of Germany (as in the cardinal direction, not the name of a former country) skews my perception westwards ;)

Can anyone recommend me some books about the Eastern Europe about Chechen/Bosnian Wars? I wanted something to read upon, since it was barely listed in the news (plus I was like 5 at the time.)

Anything about the pre/post Communist Eastern European would be interesting to read as well.

Whenever I think of the entity known as "Eastern Europe", I think of the game 'Papers, Please', although not quite as exaggerated. I've unfortunately only been surrounded by people who have only had bad things to say about any of the former Soviet Union countries all my life. So it would be nice to dispel--or correct--any nagging prejudice or stereotypes in my mind.

But anyway, I want to visit areas of Central and Eastern Europe in the future. I imagine they are not all that different from their western counterparts these days, but perhaps with a greater deal of corruption and poverty, depending on the country. (It can't be much morse than Rome when I went a few years back.)

I probably want to see Warsaw and Prague, at least.

Moved to America from Ukraine back in the 90s (as a child) - have absolutely zero interest in going back. That part of the world is full of corruption and sadness. Tons of good people stuck in a faulty and archaic system that is controlled by the essence of fear.

Do not worry, you are in EU now, milk and honey will pour from everything. € is godsend.

NOT.

Just check what happened to your northern neighbor. At least we saved our banks without EC help and in January they will reveal all info about bad credit loans and everything.. But until same old corrupted left/right/middle politicians are around, nothing will be better.

The people who I met from eastern Europe in London are some of the grumpiest, rudest people out there, even their female. While I intend to visit there as much as I can for their amazing Architecture, I am not a big fan of their people. So I don't find their women hot just because that very reason.

and are they so mysterious? If you live in Europe, you are already aware of their situation(s), mainly because of Football.

I once went to Tallinn. The free wifi everywhere was neat and the food and drinks were extremely cheap. Not very mysterious though.

In one of the episodes of the BBC series The Worlds most Dangerous Roads, two comedians drove through Georgia. What a gorgeous country. I love the old defensive towers in the mountainous regions used to defend against bandits.

If I may chime in on EE girls. I am a Hungarian living in Serbia. I worked a few months in Bosnia and for the past 6 months I am working in Austria. I spent some short periods in Germany and Sankt Petersburg and visited most of the Ex-Yu countries. Unfortunately I did not spend significant time in Hungary. Maybe I should not have turned down that job interview at Mercedes HU. But I like my current job.

In the past I thought the girls in Serbia are prettier than average, but I do not believe this anymore. The thing that mostly makes girls from here look hotter is the way they dress and the amount of makeup they wear, especially when going out. Another thing is when you base your opinion on girls in cities like Novi Sad and Belgrade. Lot of people move there looking for jobs and/or to study. Therefore there are a lot of young people. What really sets these places apart from other places I visited is the shear amount of people going out even on weekdays. When the weather is good all the pubs and likes are full and the main streets (pedestrian zones) crowded. I experienced the opposite in cities like Klagenfurt and Villach. Also in Austria pretty much everything is closed on Sunday, while here in big cities a lot of shops and places are open for business.

That said, I saw the girl of my life last week in a pub. The cutest face ever.

From people who worked in USA I heard that American girls are easier to pick up.

That may be true. It could easily be because of the messed up things many of these countries went through. In result we are probably grumpier and more pessimistic than western folk.

I'm Romanian, though I was born in New York.
I visit around every 2-3 years. I really like it, have a place in Bucharest.

Also been to all the neighboring countries, and Turkey.

I understand what you mean to some degree. These countries have always been interesting to me because the decades of Russian control have left many of them, in my opinion, in this transition state between 1st and 3rd world countries. I am fascinated with the process of modernization and watching countries and societies progress (or regress). For instance visiting Bangkok again recently for the first time in 15 years and seeing the modernization that had occurred was almost as fun and interesting for me as getting drunk and looking at titties.

Also my relatives from the mother's side are Jews from Georgia (sounds like a sitcom) who fled the country between the world wars when life started getting impossible for Jews in that region. So I have some interest in Georgia for that reason as well.

Well, it's not exactly untrue. Also, calling expats lazy is probably not a good start.

Lol, I am Latvian myself, and many of my relatives are off in the UK, I stand by what I said. I studied languages and made it work for myself here.

i was there last year, easily one of the most beautiful places ive been to - kinda place that'd be cool to retire in, i thought. great people too.

did you make Plitvice

I think I went there when I was a kid, but it's not somewhere I want to go unless I have someone to show around. It's too far out the way for an excursion each time even though it's beautiful.

Really disappointed to read this. I thought Eastern Europeans were mostly really smart people hampered by shitty governments.

Lol

So, which EE country has the hottest girls that are starry eyed that a good looking western man is talking to them and has the most liberal sexual values? Sizing up a cheap lads on tour for the summmer (no hostel-like, backpacker butchering countries pls). Thank you.

If you're English you should remember that most EE women will presume you're gay and/or have a small penis.

Yes! Eastern Europe has fascinated me for years. There is something so eerie about it to me, especially in the Carpathians.

Always thought Russia was Asian for some reason.

Anyway, Eastern Europe from my experience is pretty great. Some of the most beautiful women in the world and generally a low cost of living. Pag Island might be my favorite place to party in the world.

Culturally, Russia acts far more Asian than they do Western European.

Russia is definitely the most interesting country in the world imo. Shared between Europe and Orient, build by magnificent mind and madness, pervaded with christianity and superstitions, and torned appart by extreme cold and stunning heat. So much history, so much culture, so much unconventionnal, and so much god damn goddesses. They have the softest, the sweetest slavic language.

You consider countries that don't make the headlines to be mysterious? In that case, Canada is the most mysterious country of all, especially where I come from.

What do most people know about Canada besides provinces, maple syrup, snow, moose, and being overly polite, and partly speaking French?

Oh, and I'm defining Eastern Europe as the Soviet bloc countries.

I see quite a few people seem to think that a shitty American torture porn movie is representative of real life in eastern Europe.

I whole heatedly disagree. The language to my ears is always rough sounding and very displeasing to hear in the public. Sometimes I don't even like using it for that reason alone, so when I hear it being called "soft" and "sweet", I think that person is nuts.
