Note that for some shows listed, like Slam Dunk, the anime didn't cover the entire story. For that show in particular, the best game of the series (the last one) unfortunately wasn't animated.
Replace the basketball anime (Kuroko's Basketball) with Slam Dunk and you have a list. Or even better, check out the manga (and Real while you are at it. It is about wheelchair basketball.)
Kuroko can be fun if you don't like sports. It is over the top and fun. I think of it more like your standard ridiculous Shounen anime with a basketball skin than a sports anime.
Ippo is top tier.

But if you do like baseball check out Ookiku Furikabutte.
Just a warning with that one it's very realistic, they go through every out and all 9 innings in a game. Games take up 4-6 episodes each.

No it's way older. I think my dad who was born in the early 70s in a third world country watched it as a kid. And I mean the matches themselves took forever (kid would run with the ball for like 30 seconds, each pass would take longer than in real life. stuff like that)

This is actually really good, and there are some fun "after the credits' sequences. It really threw me off at first how everyone's face looks like they're from a different anime, but it grew on me.
I'm a huge Cross Game fan and wholeheartedly recommend watching it even if you aren't interested in baseball.
Also Chihayafuru. It's not atypical sport anime, but its tropes and characterizations are in the same vein. It's also got an incredible soundtrack.

You won't go wrong with -Hajime no Ippo
I recommend trying out Initial D.
It's a show all about street racing.
If you like the 1st half of the season it will get a lot better as it goes on and unlike other shonen style shows by 5th stage you feel like you have reached a complete arc on the main hero's and his rival's growth.

There's only one mangathat kind of stands out from the 90s and that wasn't popular enough to get an anime for it.

You could say that about most anime.
Yowamushi Pedal for example has some amazing art that gets lost because of budget cuts with using CG in modern anime.

Slam Dunk. Read the manga that was pretty cool, so cant tell you about the anime.
I love you all, I really do. Slam Dunk is the best manga I've ever read.
That was more romance slice of life than something focused on the sport.
Also fuck that manga. Although I did like the ending theme of the anime.

Yea, eyeshield stopped it's anime right before the the good stuff started happening.
Just give it a few episodes. I didn't like it at first either. The style really sells the matches.
If you want a quickie into Sports Mahjong, I suggest Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku: The Legend of Koizumi.

It really is. I saw the show for the first time last year and it instantly became an all-time fave. It can stand next to anything in the storytelling department. Amazing from start to finish
even though it doesn't really finish. Poor Taichi.
My recommendations are Ping Pong and Chihayafuru, OP. Just go watch them for awhile and make up your own damn mind.
Oh it is (I still need to watch season 2). Just not sure that of all the sport's anime the OP would want to watch, that Chihayafuru would be one of them (though the OP should give it a try).
No. That show sucked. There was only ONE thing good about it (anyone that watched the show knows what I am talking about).
Someone already mentioned Baby Steps, I really liked what I saw of s1 and the OP sequence makes me want to run through a wall.
Someone else mentioned Girls und Panzer. I thought this was moe garbage plus tanksplanesships like kancolle or strike witches or something - i dismissed it for a year or so, but when i finally saw it boy was I wrong.
Slam Dunk, Kuroko No Basuke, Hajime No Ippo, Captain Tsubasa, Major and Eyeshield 21 are great sports anime. Have watched them all and love them. Prince of Tennis is quite good too, but not as much especially the National Tournament OVA where I dunno why the heck did that just happen.
IPPO!!!
With mecha being nearly dead, sports anime is one of the only consistently good sources of entertainment in the medium.

That's not true at all.
I'm someone that doesn't watch any sport at all IRL, ever. And yet some anime like Hajime no Ippo, Chihayafuru, and Ping Pong are simply amazing and totally worth watching.
