AusGAF 11 - Twice the price, a year late but still moving forward

So, this afternoon, we did the locked room challenge at this place in West End rather than the one in The Valley that i posted yesterday.

http://brisbane.escapehunt.com/

Totally not what I was expecting. It's a really small room set up to be like a jail cell (the mystery was set in Boggo Rd Jail- used to be a notorious prison but is now luxury apartments- from 100 years ago), there's a bunch of clues and you have to solve them to open padlocks, find keys, etc until you get to the end.

We needed hints and we took them when they were offered. We got given an extra 10 minutes to finish it. Some weird puzzles I never would have gotten on my own but through a lot of trial and error we managed to beat it 30 seconds before the end of extra time. some stuff was a bit iffy in terms of design, some was quite brilliant and the best bit was finding the
black light torch

Was silly, a little frustrating but a lot of fun when you progress. I would recommend it if you have smart friends.

Nice. Only up from there.

That sounds like a lot of fun, will have to check it out.

Can someone explain this question to me.. Better yet, answer it for me in 200 words... O.O
Why is it important as a civilian to adhere to moral and ethical principles?

This is related to policing.

Cheers.

Without order there is only chaos. With chaos comes suffering. Suffering is bad for empathetic people.

I'm an extreme lateral thinker, I reckon I'd love the shit out of it. How many people does it work for... are there optimal numbers?

And are they in Melbourne? I'm sure I saw an ad somewhere saying they were, but can't quite remember.

Yeahhhh screw it I'll start over again I guess. I'll have to note down all the extensions and stuff just in case. At least I remember Ninite this time!

EDIT: Fuck it maybe I'll grab a copy of Win8 too rather than stick with Win7
I got a stupidly cheap copy of Win8 not long ago when they had some weird student deals or something. Think I paid $15 for it? Legit through MS, too.

New drive = perfect opportunity for re-install of everything, I find the process quite rejuvenating.
Yup, it's quite cathartic. But I can't deal with the fact that I might have missed backing up a save game or document or something, consequently I have about 5 or 6 old backups of download/game/document folders I can't bring myself to clear out :/

Everything else may be dearer in Newcastle, but our cheap movies are pretty sweet.
You guys have a killer pinball scene, too. Cunts.

Thinking about booking my flights to PAX Aus soon. Do hotel rooms fill up pretty quickly as well?
I haven't even booked my tickets for it yet, dunno if I can be arsed going the full weekend or not. Maybe there's a chance the Idle Thumbs guys make it down and it'll be worth it.

Probably worth it for the retro stuff anyway (hi Gaz!) but... I dunno if I can justify spending howmuchever it was for a weekend pass.

Still at Jeff's Shed, yeah guys?

Gamesave Manager. It's free, there's a portable version, it'll find all your game saves and back them up, and can restore them even if the game's not installed (and when you install it, the save will be there waiting). If the application ever stops working, you can open the files it creates with any application that can read .zip files.

They announced last year that it'll be at Jeff's Shed for the next two or three years, and next year at least is also on at the same times.

I know that, but I mean moreso the other data/documents. Gamesave Manager has served me well though, but there's other things like mods (for racing games) and hard-to-find things like unofficial game patches, graphics settings, that sort of thing.

I might do a full reinstall sometime in the near future, though. SSDs are cheap enough that I could afford to do it without having to backup anything.

As of late I have been using One drive to backup all my documents, basically anything I save goes there and game save manager backs up to Google drive. All of my game installs go to D: rather than C:. It's not a perfect catch all approach but has worked for me so far.

I booked a nice hotel last minute no problem last year Stack and that was the weekend before Melb Cup too. Probably better to have a look around now though and book at least a few months in advanced if you find one you are super keen on.

Cool, thanks for the tip!

I just got around to registering an ABN / Business name. Because it didn't stop me, my business is now called:

Y'ALL

Cuz I'm a moron or something.

You can't be a moron, you're a businessman now.

Back in Australia after 6 weeks. Damn this heat :(

Welcome back to our backwards country.

Nice picks. I nearly wasn't going to vote this year because I'm 33 and waaaaaaay out of the demographic, jjj can tend to annoy me with its "alternative pop" and RnB jamz being a mainstay, but I did end up voting. I'm just trying to keep rock and roll alive.

I voted for:

Kingswood - I Can Feel That You Don't Love Me
Jack White - Lazaretto
Grates, The - Holiday Home
Future Islands - Seasons (Waiting On You)
Black Keys, The - Fever
Band Of Skulls - Hoochie Coochie
Smith Street Band, The - Surrender
Meg Mac - Roll Up Your Sleeves
Death From Above 1979 - Trainwreck 1979
Royal Blood - Come On Over

Save manager backs up to Google Drive? Holy shit, it must've been a long time since I used that program.

well, I can't speak for other outfits but the one I was in was a pretty small set of rooms and the maximum team size is 6. I reckon 3-4 would probably be ideal. It's not a thing to try with people who don't enjoying solving obtuse problems because they will get bored and you need everyone to focus on the game. There were three of us and that worked out okay for us.
The one I went to had three different games available and each one was duplicated so you can have two separate teams racing each other as well.

There are definitely times that I switch over to another channel or put a CD on. Sometimes they just have too many hip-hop or weird pop songs.

The guy doing breakfast during the holiday break was great though, some amazing tracks for the morning drive.

Royal Blood - Come On Over

I always hear Black Keys tracks or see the music video of the guy dancing and tell myself to check them out... and then never actually do it. Going to rectify that. Should I start from the beginning or get something more recent?

Might also look in to DFA1979.

Also how fucking good is Royal Blood!

Morning all! Today's shout out goes to the Energex repair people who...actually turned up to my house reasonably quickly and fixed everything after the power went out! :O And there I was ready to get all mad at them but NOPE.

I just got around to registering an ABN / Business name. Because it didn't stop me, my business is now called:

I would recommend it

Awesome

Still at Jeff's Shed, yeah guys?

Exhibition Centre next to the casino, whatever nickname you locals have for it :)

And yeah I plan on sinking a ton of time in the retro section!
This plan will fall to pieces

Yep, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Colloquially known as Jeff's Shed because it's a giant damn shed, that Jeff Kennett (once Victorian premier, often referred to as 'Bloody Jeff', since he killed off a bunch of public holidays, among other shitty things) built. Well, he didn't build it. Whatever.

I can't believe I am writing this and making it publicly known, but lately I've become so frustrated by jjj on my car travels that I have added....Triple M to my listening list. But only long enough to hear a few tunes, then get turned off by the ads. 4zzz still gets a good spin too.

Nazeem Hussain? Yeah he really grew on me, doing breakfast over the break.

A good start to the Black Keys is their album Brothers. Solid old school rock album.

Royal Blood are fantastic! That might be my fave album of last year.

Getting Optus cable installed at the end of this month! The call centre staff were really helpful, I was surprised.

"Am I so out of touch? No it's the children who are wrong"

Yeah. I Like new games, old music and as for TV and Movies old and new.
I like old stuff like Doctor Who, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Batman and Star Trek.
But I also like new stuff like Doctor Who, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Batman and Star Trek.

Yeah it was Nazeem in the mornings. It was slightly weird only having 1 person for breakfast, but he handled it really well.

I too listen to Triple M, but that mainly comes from being brought up on it in primary school and through my parents love of a lot of that music.

I also tune in to Fresh FM sometimes, little Adelaide not-for-profit station with tonnes of shows from local DJs and producers. Day time is generally crap, but their house and funk nights are awesome.

Triple J used to be good in the like ye olde days in the morning.

Back when they had actual comedians on and not 'radio personalities'.

Used to love listening to the breakfast show with Adam Spencer and Wil Anderson.

I only caught the tail end of Mikey Robins and Paul McDermott, but there was some amazing stuff (Sandman).

Triple J is great between 8am and 4pm, which is basically the only time I listen to it. Minimal hip hop/rap tbh as I'm not big into it. I like the alt-pop they've been playing lately, main focus has been indie alt-rock stuff though.

I use their Spotify hit list quite a bit at home too.

Anyone have a Dualshock 3 they wanna get rid of for cheap? I figure it would work fantastically well with the chatpad for a HTPC, but all the official ones on eBay are either too expensive or obvious knockoffs.

Stackboy

make sure you're listening next Wednesday at 6pm! :)

What are you selling this time Gaz?

I listen to Double J at home, but their hit list has such a high rotation for a radio station that's suppose to be playing stuff from multiple decades. On the holidays we had the radio on all day and would hear the same song multiple times. I can't even find an email address to write to, in order to communicate this.

Wil Anderson is terrible. I think Jay was the last funny presenter they had.

Wil Anderson is always terrible. Face made for punching, just tries too damn hard all the time. I think Adam Hills would work great on radio, but he needs to relax a little sometimes. Great standup, too.

Edit: Will Anderson was always terrible, and has gotten worse as time has gone on. As said, such a punchable face.
Yeah I find that a lot of things manage to be successful/good in spite of his punchable face. Like how the regular guests were the ones that carried The Glass House instead of any of the hosts.

I find Wil Anderson tolerable, if smug. Not as smug as anyone on The Smug Project. Especially that douche who used it be on it with the smug 3 day growth looking smug douchetastically smug.

I should start watching the Gruen shows again now that I'm local again. Did that Gruen ad guy just get appointed to the board of QANTAS? He was slightly less smug but wonderfully articulate.
