Binary Domain |OT| BUYING THIS GAME IS Not up for Nagoshiation

He's no more stereotyped than any black ally in any other third-person shooter. People go "LOL Japan racist" yet give western games with similarly blunt characterisation a pass.

The most racist character I've encountered was in the Montreal developed Deus Ex Human Revolution.

This game doesn't strike me as stereotypical racial, but instead its main characters strike me as rote with their tree limbs and taste for blood. It recalls the 80s action movies of yore, but it's obvious from the videos I've seen that they've juxtaposed this Americanism against interesting moral problems. It sounds like good pulp in vain of I-Robot.

Furthermore, I really appreciate that they've allowed the different voice actors to speak in their native tongues. It's one hold up I've never gotten in videogames (looking at you, Assassin's Creed).

As much as I would like to play/own Kenzan & Panther, the fact that I can't understand/read the games kills all possible enjoyment factor for me. Hopefully they re-appear localized down the road in some form! =)

So I went to pick this up at lunch, and both Best Buy and Target didn't get it in. They got SSX in just fine, but both expressed surprise that this didn't show up along with SSX. Not sure what's up with that, but just letting folks know.

Well, shit, I hope that's not the case. They're going to have a difficult time selling this as even people who are attempting to purchase it are running into difficulties.

I've got a preorder with Gamestop in store, never got the robocall, but I haven't got one of those in ages.

edit: Just called the Gamestop (Seattle - Northgate Mall), apparently they got in enough for preorders but no one else.

As a follow up, spoke with person at Best Buy, who looked it up, and they are scheduled to get just TWO copies, sometime by Thursday.

Person at Target looked it up in their computer, and it wasn't even showing up.

Local Gamestop had 1 extra copy past their pre-orders, bring the total to 5.

Hate to go game pub/retailers on you, but if people don't show pre-order interest in a game? The publisher has no clue how much to send. Especially with a new IP

edit: And for numbers sake, my gamestop got 2 PS3 preorders and 3 extra copies of the PS3 game. 2 copies of the 360 version/no reserves

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Finished it earlier. Game turned my opinion around after a fairly weak start. Upgrading your gun so you become an unstoppable killer makes the game fun, and the story was pretty well done -- even though some characters like Bo and Shindo were terrible throughout.

I think they went a bit too crazy with all the "getting knocked down" stuff, as while I don't think I died more than once, its frustrating to get hit by a boss enemy multiple times and just get sent flying needing another med-pack revive.

Sadly, I don't think either will come here. But there are great guides, and you already know how to play the game. So the combo of having the guide explain the story, while playing through was enough for me.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but could you cite some examples?

Cole Train

Bo doesn't give me the same impression that every word out of his mouth is HEY YALL IM THE BLACK GUY

I think his gratuitous use of the word "aight" is more on the guys responsible for the english script than the developers and RGG Studios(In response to RACIST JAPAN or whatever)

Going out to pick up my game now

Vanquish is great too but hey, buy both! :D

I'm really liking Binary Domain..... But if you can find Vanquish for a decent price, go for it; it's a pretty awesome game.

Vanquish. Should be cheaper too.

I'd say go for Binary Domain where your support could actually make a difference right now.

Thanks for the answers guys, found Vanquish for £9 and Binary Domain for £25 (already!!) so have gone for both :D

okay, first sign of framerate trouble on the PS3 comes when you face a Spider Boss. can any 360 players confirm similar slowdown on that boss fight? Try not to spoiler it when it comes etc. just talk about the framerate.

40 minutes in. Yet to be offended by Big Bo. Still waiting for it.

Unless a guy who happens to be black who sometimes says 'aint' and 'bro' is offensive.

yeah all the characters are somewhat stereotypical but not overtly so. sure, the americans being loud, the british saying OI! the french saying sacrebleu etc. is all there. but they do have a lot more to say and there is a lot of emotion and drama put in the cutscenes and character building.

"come on tough guy" -cutscene for example

okay played till chapter 4 and yeah - the writing and dialogue gets incredible bad. and i thought the game has nothing to do with yakuzas abd writing (LOL). the pathetic german dub doesnt help them too.

also:

- framerate on ps3 gets really bad the more i play (most likely every boss battle is sub 25fps
- tactical commands are useless
- so are the nanomachine upgrades
- you can only upgrade the standard weapon and no secondare weapons
- quicktime events are really bad (okay they are not often), but man...its really bad

Not really a spoiler, but man, if president's advisor isn't a bad guy, this will be the greatest red herring in all of video games.

thats a shame, the english(and other languages spoken there) are excellent. and i've found myself using the charge and retreat commands often, playing on hard they are good when you need to overpower a bunch of robots at once. upgrading team members makes them actually destroy enemies and be useful!

Will drop pants for Sony.

Just popping in to say the game is fucking incredible! Up to Chapter 3 so far and it's pretty much everything I expected and more. Team Yakuza for life. GOTY 2012. Fuck the haters and doubters. Binary Domain does black flips all of your garbage Bioware Ass Effect.

Does anybody know if the US release will run on a Japanese 360? Or if the Japanese release runs on a US 360? If the latter is true, the former probably is.
edit: looks like it's region-free!

Apparently, Akiyama (from Yakuza) is available on the Japanese PSN. Do one of you guys know if it's possible to use him in the PAL version of the game after getting him on a Japanese account?

In the middle of Chapter 4, but I decided to take a break. Seriously, the game is paced flawlessly. It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to put this game down. The enemies are WAY too satisfying to destroy and the developers mix up the scenarios with cool, alternate gameplay segments
(Jet skis, factory/mine carts, driving mission, etc.)
Team Yakuza really was going for that Gears of War-style experience. Way before the game released I convinced myself that the team would implement their usual Yakuza formula. You know, side distractions and mini-games, whether that would be in the form of optional chapter challenges or a shooting gallery, etc. But they really stuck to their guns for this type of game. Binary Domain is all action, which I've totally accepted at this point.

Now that I feel like I am at the half way point I really don't mind that there are no mini games or side quests, etc. They clearly wanted to make a game in the vein of most campaign shooters today and I think they nailed it. As I've said before, it's pretty fucking phenomenal that a Japanese studio can create something that imitates and IMPROVES on a very tired western formula. On top of that, this is their first time making a game like this and people STILL give the game a hard time. I'll never fucking understand it. Team Yakuza should be commended for pulling off a game that feels and looks as good as this.

Seriously, you thought the Gears head shot felt good? Popping robots heads in Binary is on a whole other level of satisfaction. Sure, the voice recognition stuff isn't perfect (I cannot find a middle ground with the noise disturbance option) and the skill system isn't nearly as fleshed out as it could have been, but for what's here, it's good. There is a TON of potential here for a sequel/game that can be even greater. It's a shame so many people are neglecting this game for garbage like Mass Effect 3. It's even sadder for those who are waiting for a price drop. Support this shit so we can get an even greater title. This is an IP that SHOULD NOT be forgotten.

Really enjoy the level variety so far
Guns feel a lot better than I thought they would
Performance is noticeably better than demo
Technology has me excited for Y5, but I doubt any of it will show up

Charlie's okay

Preach it brother. I always assumed this game was going to be ass, but it's good to hear all the positive impressions.

Looks like the majority of GAF interested is going with the PS3 version? I dont really care about performance either way since they seem to be pretty much on equal footing, but I do want people to play the 4p mode with other than randoms.

Also dat Vic Viper.

Just feels weird playing a Team Yakuza game on anything other than a Dualshock at this point. So far, I've yet to have anything that ruined the experience. The boss that people mentioned being 'unplayable' only hitched up once for me, and it was for like.. 1 minute.

I'm so conflicted about this game's writing though. Like, anytime it tries to be funny? It's almost always bad, and the dialogue delivery is super robotic..

but then I got to the
Hollow child suicide cutscene
and all the dialogue was great. The camera cuts were great. It was basically everything that makes me think the Yakuza team is the best at characterization and giving their cutscenes a real cinematic feel

Fuck it I'm getting this tomorrow. I got ME3 reserved already but I keep replaying this demo, blasting these damn robots is so much freakin fun. I feel the need to buy games I really like at launch to show some support.

The combat in this game is amazingly satisfying...goddamn.

Definitely.

I think the game could've benefited from letting you play a different squad member after you beat it. All the cut scenes have them together as a group, so I don't see why they didn't toss that in. Would make playing it through multiple times more enticing.

You guys are making me wish I had the game now

I don't know if it's the type of game that I'd instantly reccomend to someone, but I really enjoy it.

It's got great atmosphere, shooting. Graphics look nice(not amazing, but 'nice'), and I really like the storyline itself.

The characters are so so. The voice acting is so so. Charlie's generally good. Bo's generally good. Faye's voice doesn't match at all. Dan's all over the place which I'm sure is because of the lines he gets because he borders on 'pretty good' sometimes.

There's some annoying parts similar to Uncharted 1's jet ski levels that frustrated me but they're fairly short. So far, they do a pretty good job of varying up the environments. Since it's Nagoshi, you better believe they put in a
hidden Japanese gambling/escort/drug venue
