BioShock Infinite's Combat Director & AI Lead Leave [And Floating World Specialist]

If Bioshock breaks down or releases broken, what next for Ken?

Follow parts of his team to MS?

And what about Rod F? He just moved! I really hope this game is just going through a transitional phase and isn't veering completely off course.

I'm thinking Ken Levine will retire, or take a leave.

Where in the world are people coming to this conclusion from? All the evidence I have seen hardly points to KL hanging his hat up. Am I missing something here? All I have seen points to a extremely ambitious game taking a long ass time to make because its a very ambitious game. Not a first for the industry.

They probably don't want to spend another 5 years working on one game. Other high profile developers would typically have 2 games released in that period.

Ouch. This games prospects are not looking great. I guess at its worst it will be bioshock in a different setting.

this is what i expect: another bioshock, just in a different setting. the big new features that we sa in the tech-demo, will be reduced to quicktime or heavily scriptet events.

As a fan of the original BioShock and someone looking forward to BioShock: Infinite bringing the franchise back to interesting territory (I strongly dislike BioShock 2 for being a cheap cash-in) this makes me sad.

Yea MS are defiantly rubbing thier hands here. Place them in charge of a new action RPG and they will be rolling in money.

Just because a few people left doesn't mean the game will be bad, they can always bring in new talent.
These departures are late enough into a very long development cycle that I don't think they will impact the quality of the game. Could be a sign of fatigue though. I hope there are not any long term problems with the studio after Infinite ships.

Good there is a very nice pool of talent building at Microsoft Game Studios, bring on nextgen

They have the lead game designer of Crysis 2 working at Microsoft Vancouver. The rumor is that the game he is working on is a Space Horror FPS.

I'm sure the game is great and is done by now. Pushing it back from Oct to Feb could have easily have been more for marketing/less competition than problems with development.

This actually give Bioshock some hope since the combat blows turds in the original.
BioShock 2's only saving grace was that it improved the combat of the original, and it was made by more or less the same dev team. So I think it's safe to say they figured out combat.

I really don't think Bioshock lived up to its promise either, so I won't be totally shocked if this one is a dud as well.
NeoGAF recently is the only place where I've ever seen so many people down on BioShock. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm just rather shocked that GAF has such a generally negative reaction to a game that some hold up as a pinnacle of video game story-telling and immersive atmosphere.

This was one of my absolute most anticipated titles back when it was revealed...
But with all these departures, I'm quite afraid of what the final product is going to be.

Really want to know what is going on at Irrational.

This game seems to be in development hell. Here's hoping it still comes out though, I'm a huge Bioshock fan and I really want to try this game out.

The 5 people that joined 2K Marin from Irrational can't be called "more or less the same dev team" unless the emphasis is on less.

Oh, it was that few?

Nevermind. No wonder BioShock 2 sucked. I now have very little hope for BioShock Infinite.
But it still stands that BioShock 2 handles combat better than BioShock 1, which bodes well for BioShock Infinite in that regard.

the game is done, I think. Tweaking and polishing is still to be done but major stuff is finished.
Even if that were the case, all these people jumping ship makes me think something bad went down during its creation. I mean, it's not as if everyone was ready to leave the company after completing Bioshock, right?

Did Ken lose his mind or something?

Infinite was handled by most of the original Bioshock team, though (unlike Bioshock 2). Though with all these people leaving one has to wonder...

If Shawn Elliot is sticking around the game must be pretty good.

I expect a good game, but nothing groundbreaking. I thought the original Bioshock is vastly overrated and that the sequel was much better.

But what are they going to do at Microsoft?

MS nuked all their game dev skills even though some years ago they were among the best.

"We make great PC games? That won't do! We are all about Xbox now!"

I highly doubt it. It has to be near done by now. I'd guess that's why you see some of the people leaving. Their work was done so they jumped ship.

People have been jumping ship since the start of August. So, if the game goes gold about a month before release (start of Feb.) that was still a solid six months worth of development, and now four months without these guys.

On one hand, combat design has never really been one of the things I loved in Bioshock. But on the other hand, this is not the first person leaving + with all the rumours of troubled development...I'm getting kinda worried.

People are burnout. No weekends, nights, social life. And search a new job, in a more human schedule place.

So Microsoft is stacking up first party devs for something next gen, then? I assume something exclusive to ramp up interest in the 720.

nobody killed their gaming skills.

MS killed a lot of internal studios though.
