This does not affect Medicare or IIRC Medicare Part D.

No one over the age of 64 in the USA buys private insurance.

This is false. Many have to purchase supplement plans or Medicare Advantage plans from private insurance. Base medicare generally covers 80% of your medical costs, you basically have a 20% co-insurance on everything. For elderly who have multiple doctors appointments a month and with expensive specialists supplement plans are a necessity.

We need a government option.

what does it mean in practice if an American doesnt have health insurance? they still get treated right..? just more expensive?

lets say you go to the ER without insurance and you have to stay overnight for some routine operation, but something goes wrong and you end up with sepsis in the ICU for two weeks, while they try every possible thing to save your life (countless bloodworks and antibiotics, MRIs, CTs, oxygen tank etc).. how much will you have to pay approximately?

Millions

Either be in debt the rest of your life or go bankrupt. Most people choose the latter. Even with insurance, all of that will likely wipe out your savings.

average premiums for insurance purchased individually—that is, nongroup insurance—would be lower, in part because the insurance, on average, would pay for a smaller proportion of health care costs.

^context for the graphic showing premiums decreasing

but thats madness.. what i described isnt uncommon, it happened to me and i had to pay only 160 euros, even without any insurance it would've been only 650 euros (3 weeks of treatments).

a lot of times you start with some relatively mild symptoms, and don't expect to even stay overnight in a hospital and think that it probably won't be too costly.. but things can go south fast (you might even be unconscious for weeks and not have any say what they do to you..) and you might have to stay for weeks or even months... how can it be acceptable in America that this can bankrupt a person? infections etc that can require lengthy stays aren't even rare!

Guess I'm holding off on getting a new iPhone after all.

This is just vile. How does one look at this scoring and think "this is what the country needs"

*insert this is Sparta gif*. That's how it is in the US. If you don't have insurance you are screwed. Its why I urge anyone here who chooses to buy an iPhone or game over insurss to reconsider asap (not saying that that is a commonly done thing, but their are people who don't prioritize insurance, or say they'd rather pay the Obamacare tax fine instead of getting it). You literally could destroy your financial future by not having insurance, everything but food and shelter should be secondary to getting it.

CBO is ran by obama lovers, NOT true patriots. Everyone there should be fired and replaced by people who want to make America great again!!

We need single payer.

Never going to happen. Not without a public option first, at least. Thinking we could replace all of the insurance corporations in this country with single payer is fantasy.

Next on the ACA's agenda has to be price controls and the public option.

OT: Republicans are scum, color me surprised. They rushed this through because they knew this would happen. Maybe don't pass a shit bill without knowing its effects, dumbasses.

Exactly. Something like the ACA was needed to gradually transition into single payer if we ever want to get there. Health insurance and related industries make up over a sixth of the economy. You can't turn on a dime without serious consequences. It's why insurance industries, pharmaceutical companies, for profit and non profit hospitals, etc. Which, unless something happened I'm not aware of, none of those groups were consulted with creating Paul Ryan's excrement of a bill.

Partially, that's the issue with the AHCA. The ACA is the conservative health care plan. Anything more conservative than the ACA is going to result in massive issues as it's applying cuts to something that is already a huge compromise. I really hope people wake the fuck up and realize that you cannot go any further right with health care. You can improve the ACA, you can create a public option, but you can't remove the ACAs protections without literally causing death or bankruptcy to millions of Americans.

Pagusas isn't exaggerating; if you had that situation where you're in the ICU for weeks, it really could end up being in the 7 figures. No insurance, you're screwed. A large percentage of people here in the US will have insurance through their employer, and would never see such a large bill, but not everybody has that, which is why we need Medicaid, ACA, etc. But many people WITH the insurance don't see why we should move to universal healthcare, because they would likely have to pay more in taxes for this guaranteed healthcare (so "fuck you, I got mine").

We're all temporarily embarrassed billionaires.

I had to pay for an operation that my insurance denied. I was able to see what the hospital would charge an insurance company, a figure that approached 100,000, compared with what they called the "self-funded" cost, which was 20 grand.

Obviously I don't know their margins; maybe they lost money on me. But I doubt it. It left me with the feeling that health care costs are completely bullshit. The hospital makes up whatever-the-fuck price they want and charge the insurance company. The insurance company can respond by raising premiums because your company pays the bulk of the premium, so what should be increased wages becomes increased premium contributions.

Not a very well thought out theory but every report about the cost of healthcare just makes me think the whole thing is one huge work and we have no power to do anything about it.

Isn't that called part C?

The Republicans are never going to take an entitlement away from the olds.

You know those inflatable wraps they put around your legs during surgery to help prevent bloodclots? I saw the bill for those once: $5500.
I bet they cost $2 to make.

You are probably right, but I bet if you look at the company it does make that atrocious of a profit.

The whole distribution system from that compliance production line to the leg is massively fucked.

Whoa whoa whoa, are you suggesting that there's a racket where people will pay an inflated price when they're sick?! Well I never. Sounds like you hate jobs.

It's not as simple as that. Even with the ACA, insurance for my wife was almost $500 a month. And if I didn't get insurance through my work I would be uninsurable.

It's true, sadly. I live in fear of being put in a scenario where an ambulance has to be called to take me to the ER. The cost would destroy me if the health complication itself doesn't first.

I have had actual nightmares where I turn doctors away, telling them "I can't afford this, I have to leave"

Depends. I worked for a manufacturer that also acted as a distributor. They recorded profit when product moved from China to the US. Then recorded profit from US manufacturer to US distribution. The again from distribution to the consumer.

Where they ever sued? What was their business lability insurance cost?

Anecdotal but my business insurance, not as high a risk as medical, is about 4% of revenue.

I was in sales at the distribution level so I wasn't privy to that info.

I agree with you though. Something that costs cents to manufacture could be sold and shipped and inventoried 10 times before it hits the consumer and at each step of distribution profit is made. The company I worked for made sure they were involved in as many steps as possible. They actually sold stuff as American made because the parts were manufactured in China and then assembled here

That being said, no amount of distribution levels should result in a cheap plastic products costing $5500

People are so brainwashed on this stuff. I'm seeing post on the local news site (Utah) and holy shit it's insane. Obamacare this socialist that, it's not my problem to pay for fat sick people and illegals. Let me pay or not it's my choice.

My Trump-voting father in law would say the same thing, and he ate his way into type 2 diabetes, major heart surgery and now dialysis.

These people are nuts.
