Some folks are being a bit harsh on Cliffy for his opinion (which is a good talking point, but calling him out for the ultra-violence/quality of Gears is immaterial here).
I think he's just trying to say that the game's reputation for crude humor precedes itself and overshadows the amazing things that make it so much more.
It really is a fantastic game that revels it its own crazy world and that's why we love it.
