Trump is the physical manifestation of all of the pent-up racism, sexism, and xenophobia that Republicans have been told to stow away for the last few decades. He's basically the Republican party's last Hail Mary before they get dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. The country has been moving more to the left for a while now, at least socially, and I think many on the right view Trump as their last chance to hang on to the old days - back when gays couldn't married, POC "knew their place", climate change was a myth, men could just grab women's asses (apparently?), etc.

If they lose Trump, they know this country will revert back to the more socially-progressive America that Obama left behind, which terrifies them. Which is why they'll stick with Trump to the ends of the Earth.

Thing is - Trump is, at best, a stall. Republicans alone cannot stem the tide of progress, I don't care how much they try. Especially if the next Democrat president is super liberal - which is basically their worst fear.

I know of two friends, well one is pretty much just an acquaintance, who are Trump supporters and they still ride on that "He's a business man and knows whats good for the economy" bullshit. An easy counter-point to that is, now that's just an option among others of how to lead a life instead of an obligation . If a woman wants to stay at home and be a housewife, that's their choice. If a woman wants to work and build a career and ambition, that's their choice too. If you want to stay at home and in the kitchen as a way to play to nostalgia of a better time, fine. But if you want to imply that most women are overly hysterical wrecks who don't know what's good for them, and only the patriarchy knows what is right, then that kind of self-hatred leads to a regressive authoritatian road that demeans all the progress made.

You can't really take this literally. A percentage of respondents to any political poll will assume bias in the pollster and reliably give the most offensive answer, the one they think the pollster doesn't want to hear. This is the reason that such a large percentage of Republicans consistently polled as believing that Obama was a secret foreign Muslim. They didn't really believe that, if that many people really believed that they'd have been out in the streets rioting every day. It's just defiance. If Trump actually gets charged with a serious crime the percentage of people who will stick by him is much lower.
