It's true tho

oh while we're on the topic, my X-Force dream team is fucking weird as shit, somehow weirder than the Puck one. Spoilering it to protect y'all from the fire.

Fantomex

Psylocke
-
Hope
-
Magneto
-
Mystique
-
MOTHERFUCKING XORN WHAT THE FUCK I KNOW RIGHT?????
Too basic. Mystique can stay but I'd replace Magnet, Hope, and Xorn? (You crazy) with Lady Deathstrike, Toad, and Doop. Now that's an unnatural team of killers.
Drawing comics is hard so I've been avoiding it the past 2 weeks and just dicking around with some new photoshop brushes I got. It feels like I've forgotten how to draw because comics are exhausting in the best way.

I ended up doing a submission for Oni Press last night so hopefully maybe something will come from that.

On actual comics reading:

reread vol 1 of Criminal. Good stuff but I dont think it's Bru and Phillips's best. I really liked Sleeper so maybe Ill reread that too once I've gone through more of Criminal

When you get famous can I become your entourage?

Wasn't really feeling Astonishing Spidey/Wolvie until the mojo reveal in issue 4, then not only did I love it but it made the previous issues better too. Also dat Kubert art, my god

Does anyone know how long the Fade Out is supposed to be? I'm making my way through a few trade and just wrapped act one out of the first volume of the Fade Out and I noticed that the next issue just came out.

I like the series, but it also feels like it flows so much better in collected form, but at the same time not sure I want to wait months to get answers lol

After Fatale's weirdness Brubaker said he's not saying how long his comics run anymore. That said my theory that has its basis in my ass is that it's not gonna be much longer because it's about goddamn time for some new muthafuckin Criminal

Yeah, the worst colouring on Phillips's stuff is on that volume I feel. Not sure if Val Staples gets better right away (i.e. the next collection) but he does get quite good by the end before he got the axe in favour of Dave Stewart and Bettie B

It felt trying-too-hard-serious-silly and not silly-silly. When I found out about Mojo it made the previous issues better like I said

Here's an interesting (and long) look at the Ultimate Universe from Vulture.

“When I got hired, I literally thought I was going to be writing one of the last — if not the last — Marvel comics,” says now-legendary comics writer Brian Michael Bendis, who wrote the first comic of the Ultimate line and will be writing the final one, too. When he wrote that first issue in 2000, the once-venerable Marvel was in chaos. “It's so the opposite now, that people don't even know.”

Luckily, Marvel had a charming, freshly minted editor-in-chief with great respect in the indie-comics world: Joe Quesada, who quickly sought out writers from outside the Marvel family. Quesada (who could not be reached for an interview) also had the virtue of being a devoted company man: Jemas recalled that Quesada would’ve preferred to “tell stories about new heroes, e.g., Peter Parker’s nephew,” rather than do a reboot, but went along with the Jemas plan nonetheless.

Eesh.

Instead, [Bendis] won the gig by writing an elegant script that read more like a TV pilot than a '90s superhero comic: There were no thought bubbles of internal monologue, no rushed exposition, not even a costume in the first issue. And it didn’t feel self-consciously “modernized”: There was no shock-value violence, and the 30-something Bendis wisely went easy on teen slang (though there are some snippets that haven’t aged well, e.g., “See you on the flipmode”). The first issue was 45 pages long — more than twice the length of an average comic — which allowed for realistic pacing and Mamet-esque conversational dialogue.

But you didn’t have to be a liberal to love The Ultimates: It was a rip-roaring action story with luscious artwork, and even though Ultimate Cap wasn’t intended as a role model, many took him as such. “People would say, 'I joined the army after reading The Ultimates because I wanted to make a difference in the Middle East,' and I was like, 'Well, I kinda meant the opposite of that,’” Millar recalled with a laugh.

Then it gets into Ultimatum:

(I reached out to Loeb for an interview but was told he would only speak with me if we didn’t discuss Ultimates 3 or Ultimatum.)

And Miles:

“We started thinking about who ended up being Miles, and it became obvious that the only way Miles works is if Peter isn’t there,” Bendis said. “Then you realize that the trigger has to be pulled.” Bendis wrote a story in which Ultimate Peter dies a hero’s death. Around the same time, shy teenager Miles Morales gains similar abilities to Peter’s and tentatively starts fighting crime in his stead. The ensuing story lines were classic Bendis: tender, streamlined, and optimistic. Miles wasn’t just an Afro-Latino Peter Parker. He was his own person, kind and quiet, reluctant to stand out and perpetually struggling with self-doubt — in many ways, an even more believable teenager than Ultimate Peter had been.

And Cataclysm:

Creators and editors I spoke to said the decision to kill the Ultimate brand came sometime in 2013. There was a last-ditch Ultimate story that year, entitled Cataclysm, where a cosmic entity came to devour the Earth. Then-writer of Ultimates Joshua Hale Fialkov told me the writing was on the wall: “The way it was put to me was, we need to do something gigantic,” he said, “but if it didn’t raise the profile of the universe, then they’d end it.” It was a sales failure. The trigger had to be pulled.

"Marvel Comics — the superhero-comics company that had invented the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and countless other icons —"

fuck this bullshit.

e: that said the idea that there are goobers out there who think of Ultimate Cap as a role model is both grade A funny and genuinely horrifying

All I learned about Black Cat is I should read Superior Team-Up because apparently I'm missing important shit from the Superior storyline.

John Stewart is usually the second GL now. The priority list is Hal > John > Kyle > Guy > Baz. Stewart essentially headlined GL Corps and it looks like Lost Army will be more of the same. Kyle's New Guardians just ended, he's a White Lantern, and Omega Men is beginning with him being killed off. Guy is a Red Lantern and has an awesome pornstache. Honestly, he lucked out with a better status quo.

No one knows where Simon Baz is. Johns created him and discarded him.
See I hadn't heard anything about Stewart in the New 52 and fuck killing Kyle. What the hell? Is it because he's a White Lantern? It's because he's a White Lantern, isn't it? Fucking damn it.

I've also heard that Red Lantern is a good series, surprisingly enough.

He's out fighting whale monsters in the antartic as of Squirrel Girl
Sounds godlike. How it should be. Though he should be dead. How did that not stick (though I'm not surprised).
Urich is still working for the original as the new Hobgoblin I believe. Same MO, selling off super-villain identities to chump criminals.
Really? After all that happened with the Goblins and everything, he just goes back to business as usual?
That was a weak run. I did like Betsy cursing up a storm, and I like Spiral. But yeah its very random. The current X-Force is awesome and nobody is reading it
I have been. I literally mentioned that I just read the final trade a few pages back. Good shit.

RIP Kyle. He shall never be seen again.

And yeah parts of Red Lanterns is good. Mostly the Soule stuff and some of it before and after. But mostly Soule.

Looks like Capullo is done with monthlies after Batman. If you haven't followed on Twitter, he went to the ER with chest pains. They deemed his body stressed. Dudes 10-16 hour days/ 7 days a week is catching up too him. He just said on there that he think the solution is to not leave comics, but leave monthlies.

Damn that's to bad if so.

Does anyone own the Hellboy Library Editions? The freakin' paper is getting on my nerves, I can barely flip the page without a print being left behind. WTF?

Was reading it last night, and yeah those pages are thick, also feel im skipping pages. Other than that I love those HCs

Goodluck man.

I have the Criminal OHC, really liked it but I can see what you mean by its not their best.
I like everything they do a lot tho.
I will have to check out Sleeper.

Lol, you didn't miss anything. Certainly not in Superior Team-Up. Let me tell you what happened - SpOck punched Felicia and left her for the cops. The end. Wasn't even a major point in that issue. He swung by and took care of her like a common criminal.

Now she's mad.

Thats what makes it so funny. It was a nothing moment. He just sweeps her up like a normal criminal when she is expecting peter.

Lady Deathstrike is a good pick and I wish I had it, but the rest's there for thematic reasons, there's a whole thing about Identity in the face of being a bunch of unstoppable grey-ops killing machines, and violent fiction at large.

Also Mags is there because it makes Xorn's presence that much more mysterious, and that's one of the hooks.

My six year old son is all about puzzles and loves learning. So right now his favorite villain is The Riddler. Any good storyline a with him that would maybe be okay for me to read with my son?

Check out Batman '66 #1, that series begins with a Riddler story arc and is going to be age appropriate for your son. You can get it as mini-chapters on Comixology or as print issues.

Where's a good place to order used comics with free shipping/cheap shipping? Was going to pull the trigger on all these used TPBS of JSA but the shipping cost was like 4$ per trades which is over $50 with all TPB :(.

Looks like he is still working hard towards that goal.

My final piece of art for a while arrived. It is one of those pieces I never thought I would get to own. I am absolutely in love with it. Its a page of Katchoo and Francine from Strangers in Paradise #51

CF8L2JlWYAADtso.jpg

I was emailing back and forth with Terry's wife (I believe) about wether or not he does sketches outside of commissions that I would love to own a sketch of Katchoo someday and I got no response about it. When the page arrived this was inside.

CF8MD16XIAAz2Po.jpg

It made me want to cry. I was so happy.

That's super cool Messi. What's a Terry Moore page run if you don't mind me asking?

Also, I just read Bitch Planet #4. Good lawd this book is good.

Awesome! Just be careful not to cry onto the paper!

Thanks man.

I might be biased towards Sleeper and Incognito since those two were my first comics from Bru and Phillips. They're such a solid team. I really liked what I've read of Fatale and haven't gotten into the Fade Out yet.

Yeah I'd say Staples was in illfitted for the brushy type of work Phillips does. Stewart and Bretweiser are much better with it. Bretweiser is one of my favorite colorists. Soon good

When you get famous can I become your entourage?
Sure. just don't ditch me for J Scott Campbell as soon as you get a chance!
