Crowdfunding Thread - 2016 - The future of gaming on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and FIG

CkQv2pb.png

Kudos once again to MrCummingham for the new 2016 banner

In the fashion of the 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 threads, the focus of this thread is to share and discuss promising video game projects seeking funding through Kickstarter (and Indiegogo and other crowdfunding sites).

2015 was another big year for crowdfunding. Dream projects like Shenmue 3, Psychonauts 2, and Bloodstained were made a reality, and older IPs found new life through Battle Chasers and Battletech. Records were shattered on both Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and a new crowdfunding platform was formed.

Here were some of 2015's most successful and interesting campaigns:

This OP and thread won't cover every campaign, but mainly the ones that are noted within its pages as well others that I might learn about.
This thread is focused primarly on gaming campaigns; this includes both games and game-related projects like the Independent By Design book and Video Games Live

Slipstream - ends 1/17
Slipstream is a racing game inspired by the visuals, music, games and cars from the late 80s and early 90s. It's built on a custom game engine, made specifically for this game, which grants it an authentic retro feel and unique graphics. The soundtrack, drawing from synthpop and jazz fusion influences, sets the tone for a race across a variety of exotic locations from all around the world, including cities, deserts, forests, mountains and beaches. Drifting and slipstreaming mechanics add depth to the driving gameplay, and the result is a challenging and exciting experience.

Oh my god...

Slipstream is inspired by every racing game I hate. I know games like Outrun have their fans and I even beat Hang-On on the Master System but these days I just can't get excited for a racing game when it's basically shuffleboard on a treadmill.

Shadows of Adam will launch their KS in January!

Shadows of Adam

A specter haunts the small, remote village of Adam. It is the ghost of its dour hero, Orazio, who set out 10 years ago without explanation and never returned, leaving his son and adopted daughter to wrestle with the dark secret he left behind. A secret that must now be revealed if the children hope to save their departed father, though its revelation could unhinge the world.

Thanks for the heads-up, and for the kind words. I do my best. Spreading the word on cool indie games is a passion and hobby of mine. Have a blog too

So the bad news is that The Last Night probably isn't getting a Kickstarter

The good news is
It's going fucking awesome! We're moving to London next month, we're funded, the game is looking better than ever.
We're going to make a huge announcement in the upcoming months, until now we'll make progress in the shadows...
So they totally have a publisher. I wonder who it is

A lot of Kickstarted projects are slated for release this year. Rain World, Darkest Dungeon, Slain, Amplitude, SuperHOT, Hollow Knight, Songbringer, and so many more

2015 had to be the most successful year for crowdfunding campaigns ever right? I gotta say I'm pretty pleased how well this sort of thing has taken off. Crowdfunded games (past, present and future) probably make up the bulk of the games I've enjoyed the most or I am looking forward to the most in the past few years <3

Don't forget Mighty No. 9. I know we are all looking forward to that right? Right?
Fuck it I am. Love me some "Mega Man". Here's hoping the game delivers.

Man, Psychonauts having to get its funding extended, like, twice is kind of sad.

Looks like Double Fine really squandered a lot of its good will with the Broken Age fiasco.

And the SpacebaseDF9 fiasco, and Massive Chalice, as I understand, wasn't as good as it could have been.
This is their third go at Crowdfunding, I think people are not as receptive as they've been in the past.

I was not aware this was a thing that existed but now I do and I will be following this cloesly. Thanks!

They specifically said they extended it because they were afraid of failure? Sub-200k in 5 days is super doable - especially for an IP like Psychonauts.

Just an update for the OP. Psychonauts 2 is now ending on January 12th, 2016.

capture4pubq.png

I don't think it changed, maybe OP just had it wrong?

Here's part of a screencap from last month:

fig_deadline.png

Deadline didn't change. The exact time changed by an hour but that's trivial.

But on that subject, yeah I don't think the Psychonauts campaign has been as strong as people expected. I don't know if that's because people don't want to use a site that's not KS/IGG or if it really is the public perception of Tim Shafer's previous crowdfunding projects.

Considering how people were pledging like crazy when the campaign launched, I don't think it has anything do with FIG being a new untested crowdfunding platform

More likely a mix of the perception regarding Double Fine and the time of year. Christmas, New Years, people probably sending more money on gifts than pledges

When was it supposed to end?

It wasn't changed recently or anything, but it was changed. The original Psychonauts end date was January 8th, 2016. The date was changed to the following week with the January 12, 2016. OP's original date was closer to the original date, not the newer one.

Anyways,

Yeah, I find the culmination of these factors more accurate, likely. Regarding the start of the campaign, I was shaken by how many backers rushed to a new platform simply to invest in the title (myself included).

I'm not sure if the investment factor is one Double Fine really needed following the Internet's soundwaves from Broken Age, but it happening I suppose.

Ooohhh, okay, old news then. This happened in the first couple days of the campaign and they said it was some sort of a coding error.

While this is probably the worst time of year for any crowdfunding campaign it is very strange that it hasn't really picked up. Especially when you just look at the reward tier backers. I always figured Psychonauts had more fans than Shenmue and it's definitely a more critically acclaimed series. Something's up but I don't think the holiday slowdown explains it.

I blame part of it on their lackluster hype train. It's clear from the DFA documentary that Tim didn't put pen to paper until the campaign was succeeded. He has his reasons but I don't think they're helpful for a crowdfunding effort. Sure they've made a CGI teaser but if they were constantly trickling out info like new characters whose heads you'll be getting into, it would go a long way to keeping up the interest. Think of the Indivisible campaign for an example of this done right, those guys worked their asses off and their success was well deserved.

Indeed, Lab Zero certainly did right by maintaining interest for this campaign and the constant communication from people like Ravidrath has been superb. I really look forward to their updates coming this year.

In comparison, Double Fine hasn't given much in the way of plans for the sequel. While "it's not over until it's over", the extent of the planning has been "We didn't know things before Psychonauts that we do now." While likely true, as a backer I would like some more direction on a vision for this latest project, even something purely conceptual (barring the basic synopsis that has been explained). The Devs Play series has been an outlet to show that Double Fine is hopefully willing to learn from other successful developers (while somewhat promoting the project), but I certainly wouldn't hate to see more discussion about ideas for...the game itself.

I think they've given the Devs Play and Social Media Goals too much of the load for generating interest and, in turn, have created a lackluster "Hype Train". This is the funding period and it's the time to really tell potential backers why they should be looking forward to a Psychonauts 2.

I'm not too familiar with Shenmue, though I did back it. I'm sure many backed it from its legendary online infamy of the "It will never happen" Circle along the sides of (what was once) Duke Nukem Forever and Half-Life 3. I don't believe Psychonauts 2 every really found itself in that arena. That said, Shenmue likely had much better updates regarding plans for the game. Heck, the stretch goals alone explained the potential scope more than DF has thus far for their respective project,

Oh my god...

Slipstream is inspired by every racing game I hate. I know games like Outrun have their fans and I even beat Hang-On on the Master System but these days I just can't get excited for a racing game when it's basically shuffleboard on a treadmill.

C'mon! I know it's a question of taste, but don't be so harsh! The soundtrack seems amazing and I don't believe actual slipstreaming is a mechanic we see a lot in these games. Also they've talked about some different game modes, specially a complex narrative one.

I really believe this game deserves more attention as the deadline is getting nearer.

I haven't been following that at all. So basically people are upset that slacker backers are getting the same rewards as Kickstarter backers?

No. There was a poll to determine if the remaining Kickstarter tiers not already on the PayPal site would be opened to slacker backers, but the poll result wasn't strong enough to indicate a large desire for this, so nothing is changing (I personally disagree with this decision).

THEN the games media started inferring that PayPal backers won't get any rewards at all, with The Know and Engadget outright stating it as fact.

Of course, this was a lie/misconception that they could have figured out if they did a minute of research and actually looked on the Kickstarter page for this quote:

KICKSTARTER REWARDS ON PAYPAL
Rewards labeled as “Kickstarter Exclusive” have not been offered on the PayPal site because we felt it was unfair to offer them after the Kickstarter had ended. There have been many requests, however, for certain rewards like the S3 World Telecom to be offered on the PayPal site. We would like everyone to weigh in and tell us what you think. If there is a strong consensus either way, the rewards will either remain as Kickstarter Exclusive, or will be offered on the PayPal site. Keeping our promise to you is very important to us; but at the same time, the PayPal site was set up precisely because fans could not back the Kickstarter and they feel they should not be penalized for that.

The poll stuff is in the wind right now. Any major anger should be pointed at the games media for not doing their research, or just not caring that they're complicit in a lie.

I'd like to mention the absolute nightmare I've had with FleetCOMM

I backed this project in 2012, it succeeded & has been mismanaged to hell and back since.

It seems like one guy who has done almost nothing & has dived between not communicating and outright lying for 3 years.

Recently several people have been requesting refunds & we've been strung along for a while, having been insulted on Twitter and via PM and also given instructions that any refund given means we're never allowed to mention the situation or the project again on social media and the like.

The project creator is also a pretty horrible person who is using the project as a soapbox to spout ridiculous gamergate crap.

I just saw The Space Revolver Kickstarter today. It sounds pretty interesting.

"Space Revolver started out as a single screen one-hit-kill platforming action game heavily influenced by games like Towerfall and Samurai Gunn, with gameplay and character control influenced by Megaman X, all set in a world deeply inspired by Cowboy Bebop. It’s slowly grown into a game with a branching single player campaign, custom character creator, online multiplayer, and an in depth level editor."
