Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 on PSVR

I mean, completely ditching the whole beach sports aspect and make it completely just a dating sim and virtual love doll thing.
the game is about watching girls on a beach vacation.. I don't really get your point. The game is VERY upfront about what it is

every activity has an "auto" mode where you're just controlling the camera. can't really get more direct than that. it actually has barely any dating sim aspects to it

I guess that's true too. I think it might be more that it's just weird that a, if not major, at least a significant publisher has gone down this route with having this sort of branding associated with what at one point was a relatively mainstream fighting game series. I'm generally all for cheese and beefcake in games, but this series has gone so hard down the otaku rabbithole that it's hard to see these moves as anything but alienating.

We're sort-of entering new media territory, so standards haven't been defined for the most part of how interactivity plays into things. To me gravure/cheesecake has a distinct "look but don't touch" aspect to it, suddenly adding in the ability to flip her skirt up or grope at her breasts while she tells me to stop definitely feels like something completely different.

I don't know what the answer is, and am not necessarily looking for one, but the interactive nature of things definitely sets a different standard.

Well I argued about that before, but the fact that the female characters visibly protested instead of being aroused is a very clear line that makes DOAX gravure still. If it was possible to make the girls enjoy the fondling, then we enter grey territory that goes beyond that.

As someone who was banned for posting in a DoA3 thread that it was for jerking off, having it turn into a literal rape sim is strangely vindicating.

No wait, fucking disgusting

Ehhh...

Looks kinda dull and pointless.
The feedback isn't great, the girl is annoying with repetitive dialogues and the gameplay/hand options are extremely limited, like you can't pull on her cloths or touch her gently, or run your fingers through her hairs.

The girl neither fights you off nor gets turned on, so why the hell would I even wanna touch her? Or what if I decide that I don't want to harass her and try to flirt with her, can I do that? No.

I honestly expected a lot more from TN. There isn't any depth here, there are no skills involved. The interactions are pointless and exist in a vacuum and won't effect your relationship with the girl.

Also, isn't this 60fps? If so, then TN has missed a huge opportunity. They aren't using half of those frames for gameplay purposes which is really disappointing IMO. Like they could have given the girls better AI's so they would remember which parts of their body player likes to touch more, so they would be more on-guard when it came to those parts. Then the next time you see the girl she knows you like to grope her right breast more than her left one, so she is waiting for that to happen so that she can stop you. You approach the girl, look at her right breast, ready your hand to grab it and as she is about to catch your wrist and stop you, BAAM, you cancel your grope and quickly switch to grabbing her left, unguarded, breast with your other hand!

On the fly grope switching, man!

But alas TN shows how lazy and amateur they are in this genre. I think they still have a lot to learn if they wanna catch up to the AAA giants of this genre.

What I wonder is if this will be translated into English for the Asian release. I have an Asian copy of DOAX3 for PS4, and most of that is translated just fine, so I'm wondering if this will also be getting proper English subs as well.

This makes me want a PSVR quite a bit (too bad I'm really broke right now).

This looks....fun. Lewd games are always nice.
....Why doesn't Team Ninja just make a porn game already though? They keep getting closer and closer to it but they never cross that line. This whole VR game seems like one big tease.

As previously mentioned in this thread, porn games are not allowed on consoles and handhelds in Japan. Their business model relies on selling tons of DLC costumes anyway, and no one would bother if the game was just full-on porn. Those types of games can only be released on PC, and they are not big sellers anyway. It would also damage their brand being associated with literal porn, no big console publisher wants that.

That's like asking why aren't more Hollywood films rated R.

The fact is full on pornographic games are NOT mass market products. Most porn games are released by small teams because that is the only way for the production to turn a profit. Yes, there is a market for porn, but most people are not willing to spend much on them. Compare to that, having the game not cross the line and have it be released on a major Console is far more profitable. That's just the reality of it.

i really think team ninja could buck the trend and not only make a profit on PC, but not have it damage their brand considering their brand is most associated with a 3D fighter that's weirdly sexualized compared to its competitors. DoA is probably my favorite 3D fighter and them diving full force into it one time wouldn't really shock me or anyone else that's familiar with the titles. they're not namco or netherrealm.

They would make a profit, but they would make LESS money than before. So why would they?

How big do you think the porn industry truly is? Most porn in the world are entirely free these days, and it is not really possible to watch porn for hoursy, biology doesn't work that way. It seems you have a misconception of the porn indstry being easy money, when in reality it is big but with razor sharp profit margins.

I'm not sure if this warrants a new thread, but this is picking up some steam in the general media. I saw a link to an article on Business Insider on LinkedIn which quotes Engadget.

'Dead or Alive' VR is basically sexual assault, the game

As the player pokes and prods Kasumi's body with the PlayStation 4's motion controller, she tells him "I don't like it," and uses a word that directly translates to "bad" that is often used to flatly deny permission. The player persists, and the character naturally recoils. We did too -- it's a blatantly sexist and aggressive experience.

We've come to expect over-the-top, sexist gameplay from Dead or Alive's beach volleyball spinoffs, but denial of consent being part of Xtreme 3's VR gameplay takes the series to a new low.

Business Insider's:
A new game for PlayStation VR that glorifies 'sexual assault' is scheduled to be released in Japan
UploadVR's Jamie Feltham writes that game features controls that lets a player "prod at the women who will apparently jump and squeal in reaction."

Feltham adds:

"I know it’s easy to look at something like this and say 'Well, Japan' but it’s still surprising to see this all on PlayStation VR ... it’ll be interesting to see if the mere existence of this type of content creates controversy for Sony."

Which is saying something, as the US also has games where women can be treated in despicable ways and even mere critiques of such content has, more than once, blown up into major threats and attacks on the person pointing out a game's sexism.

Yikes...

if they cut this, added nudity and sold it, do you think it would lead to more sales of the separate product then this would add to the original?

porn's a $97 billion industry according to this, so might as well get your foot into the thing that'll revolutionize porn for years to come early.

There's money in the tease. Introduce nudity and you circumvent their whole DLC plans of releasing skimpy outfits. Not to mention there's no where to go from there, except maybe hardcore porn and they're certainly not going to do that.

They are not releasing the game in the West and already these kind of articles pop up lol

I think it's kind of a bad look globally for Sony to allow this, even it is just a region exclusive. Plus 'Sony condones Virtual Sexual Assault' is one helluva clickbait title. They need to realize that Sony is a global brand now and that if something gets the PSVR certification over there it's going to get airtime over here, at least within enthusiast circles (Maybe even some 'dark side of VR' moral panic MSM fluff pieces).

I mean, even though I still feel they have the right to do it, I still think it's really bizarre that they've just, again and again, doubled down on the male fantasy angle. Wasn't DoA once one of the major fighting game franchises?

DoA from day 1 is a series that got its recognition because of its female characters. Nothing has changed about that. It was a simplified version of Virtua Fighter with bouncy breasts.

Not really. It's angle has always been the women and the boobs, and never really held up as a serious game among the FGC. Technology eventually caught up and they were able to really push the sexy angle beyond jello tits.

I think my favorite news coverage of this game is Gematsu's. No opinions or anything. Just shows off the game.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation, although that's a bit unfortunate, really. The purpose of this game is quite plainly to titillate. Fidgeting around it seems kinda silly imo. Though I suppose it makes for a decent way to show off what CAN be done with VR lol.
Though I really would like to see PC gaming pick up more in Japan; there's so fewer restrictions, and if PC gaming became as big as console gaming over there there might be more incentive for such content to be made and released. I can't really imagine it would ruin DoA's image any. Everyone already knows what DoA games emphasize. Though I don't really know the culture surrounding such content over there, so maybe I'm underestimating how people would think of DoA as a brand if such were done.

To me the most likely reason TN programmed the girls to say 'no!' when poked or whatever is because the game is literally trying to discourage the player from touching them while still providing the feeling of immersion. Having a game over screen whenever you touch a boob would, I imagine, break immersion immediately. If they program her to say 'yes! touch me more!' it goes immediately into AO rating territory.

true. their dlc sells pretty well then?

i think they could still do a standalone and release dlc for the volleyball spinoff.

Reminds me of how Hatsune Miku games have a blur filter if you try to augur the camera in for an upskirt. Also Japanese erotica regulations are bizarre in general; uncensored porn is actually completely illegal in Japan; every genital has to have at least some strip of black bar to censor the urethra or vulva.

But I mean this all just begs the question of 'why is a touching minigame in it at all', if this would be a problem?

Why shouldn't it be in the game? There is a demand, so they full-fill it. The only thing is they made sure to tone it down to allow it to exist on a Console.

I find it mysterious that so many here are unable to comprehend that censor restrictions exist, but that just because they exist doesn't mean the game makers can't offer something the customers want that is still allowed. It isn't black or white, there is a middle ground betwen Family Friendly and hardcore pornography.

Maybe we should remove the PG rating from movies? Force everything to be G or R?
