They do replace quitters, just not right away. In my experience it seems like you won't get a replacement until you've reached the boss. I've only had people quit on me about 2-3 times but each time I got a replacement once I got to the boss. I've also joined a strike in progress while they were at the end.

Yeah, I went into Raid matchmaking and joined in progress, right as we beat the final boss.

Got all the credit and loot and everything, only had to play for about 15 minutes.

Thanks Bungie!

I see no problem with this. It's much better than the alternative, which is losing a player before the boss and everybody else being SOL.

EDIT: Your general attitude and snark is really annoying TBH.

So, are we arguing about people not being social enough in a game with less social options than the usual?

If Bungie really wants you to be social, then put options, like, for example, a global in-game chat where people can talk and meet up for raids. Right now Bungie just capped the social interactions because reasons.

I don't know I want that. Right now especially, imagine the amount of players who would love to just chat negative stuff about the game in public.

Shooters are lot the best breeding forums for friendly public chat anyway.

What would be much better would be more streamline ways to add people. Perhaps something like an emote you could use to instantly request a fire team member, or a flag you could activate to instantly make a fireteam when you matchmake and if more than one player has it they sync up.

Then clan support, and clan chat channels. Maybe even clan only tower instances with their own local chat, etc...

People seem much more considerate when you add them directly. Give them the option to engage in a local chat where they can say something and run and things can get very antiscoial. Not sure Destiny is in the right place atm.

A global chat is just an example of what they could do.

Your flag/emote suggestion is basically just a party finder. This isn't rocket science.

I'm just discussing the pros and cons of the ideas as I see them, and ways which they would fit into the current Destiny systems in a snug way, no need to be like that.

In the magical world where I am god and rule over game development with an iron fist...

You go to the tower and visit some booth, like special events or postmaster.

You select select "Join public party" or "Create public party"
You have some filter boxes and menus, like "PVP/patrol/strike/mission/raid", "voice chat required", "Level range X-Y"
You make a fireteam and have a social experience in this social game, rather than spamming invites and/or joining random fireteams then trying to convince them to play that game mode that you like.

We've all played online shooters like BF where you have a server browser and you look for people with servers that have the right ruleset/player count/map rotation. IIRC Halo let you create and search for custom PvP matches in the same way, so this is hardly mind-blowing stuff.
It's not a perfect solution, but it's infinitely better than no solution beyond, "I dunno, maybe get your laptop out and find a suitable forum thread"

I've got about 50 Destiny-friends thanks to GAF. I'm still lucky if I can find 1 that is in my level range and doing the same missions as me (though this may be easier when I hit 20+ where most people are already!)

I wonder what the raid will be like. It's been promoted like some uber-hard teamwork required event. But the story was promoted as being a Tolkien-esque epic, so I'm not believing the hype this time.
I have a pessimistic feeling that it's going to be like a strike but with the enemy count and bulletsponge ratings dialed up to 11. The teamwork will be the same level of "try not to die at the same time as everyone else".
Here's hoping I'm wrong.

Sorry if I sounded aggressive, that wasn't my intention. All I'm saying is, other developers have already figured this out, Bungie has tons of ways to do Raid matchmaking to choose from, they can just pick whatever they think suits Destiny the best.

What is unnacceptable is having nothing at all.

This game is such a troll.

I've played the game for like 50 hours, and today, I've finally seen my first exotic weapon. I got lucky too, because it was an awesome looking hand cannon, which also happens to be my favorite weapon type. Sounds amazing, right? Well, not really. Apparently, to unlock it I have to kill 500 players in the Crucible. LOL. Thanks, but no, Bungie. If the PvP was at least decent, I wouldn't mind so much, but I'm not touching that POS multiplayer with a ten foot pole.

Lol, that is terrible. Someone out there is grinning happily as his counter slowly moves up though.

The story we got in game was NEVER promoted as a Tolkein epic.

The story we'll get over the next ten years was.

This first version and instalment was always the starting block for something larger. The have said his from day 1. I'm not saying they couldn't have had a stronger start, not am I saying it will pan out well in the end (time will tell), but people are taking what they said and twisting it far too often.

Remember when Bungie games were not only an example of great game design, but kept the SP and MP completely separate? Those were the times...

Damn... that's pretty messed up. That's terrible. Players are already burdened enough trying to get those rare and legendary weapons, but then you may have to raise some stats just to use them? Keast Bungie coulda done is offer some lube...

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
I know it's a staple of the genre these days.

..but my wife was laughing because I got some new loot.. a helmet.. but it's a level higher than me.

Then joked "Guess you're too stupid to figure out to put that helmet on, but shooting more aliens will make you smart enough to figure out it goes on your head"

Switched over to PvP for the day...anybody else really not feeling it? I love Halo, but this feels way too chaotic. There don't seem to be any safe places on the maps, I always feel like I'm getting shot at from everywhere. And then somebody can activate their power, and just murder you with no counterplay.

It will become fun once you get better! Just hang in there, try different weapon types, etc.
I also fare much better on certain maps.. I'm not that great on more open MP maps, but the smaller ones just click.

Certain maps are more chaotic than others, but basically the PvP is designed not to give much leeway to campers and snipers, which in my books is great. Just keep at it and you'll learn choke points etc. I'm finding it harder than most competitive multiplayer games, but still very fun.

Destiny Review
I am writing this review as a GAFFER who has cleared the game, played dozens of strikes, a few rounds of PVP, and generally worked to experience everything Destiny has to offer. I do have some disappointments however I am enjoying the game still. I am currently level 20 Warlock (Light level 26) with 5 pieces of Legendary; I am currently working on a Titan and a Hunter as well. I was frustrated by the lack of solid information regarding a serious play through of the game so here are the thoughts of someone who played neither the Alpha nor the Beta.

Pros:
Smooth, Refined Gameplay - Gun use feels fluid and smooth, Character movement as well as using the speeder is fun and enjoyable.

Graphics - Absolutely gorgeous game, definitely visually satisfying.

Sounds - Music scores are pretty solid and help you get into the game, However I have noticed that for some weapon sounds they sound like they were pulled from Halo and just returned to either sound deeper/higher.

Strikes - I'm a big fan of these however they're unfortunately very short. It's nice to pop in and bang out a quick strike for quick loot.

Social - This is a game built around socializing, It is definitely a step in the right direction however there's so much missing (This will also be a Con and it will be elaborated on)

AI - Enemy reactions are actually quite good... Typical enemy AI is dumb however Destiny's tends to be more strategic as they attempt to flank, Take cover and wait for their shields to regenerate, Gang up on you, AI is actually far better than most that I've seen.

Dat Speeder - Seriously... Dat Speeder, Is easily a fun fest..., I have found some of my most enjoyable times in the game being me just cruising around on it, and finding enemies and practicing boosting right into them killing them, and sending them flying... , Controls feel fantastic and it is just so fun to cruise around on.

End Game - So far I've been enjoying it a lot, the difficulty definitely begins to crank up as you hit 20 and start to excel past that. Working harder for your kills against a smarter more aggressive AI. Not to mention Loot starts to rain down as you get to this point. I'm excited for September 16th when the Raid goes live and I get to take my friends into this.

Character Customization - Is nice but is lacking in variety... Hairstyles are laughable and in fact they look terrible.

Cons
Story - The story is the single largest disappointment I have for the game..., It spends so much time rambling about 30 different things every mission that honestly I no longer have a clue as to what is going on. There are a lot of plot holes, a lot of random objectives/missions that quite literally bounce you as the player around the game with no idea as to exactly why.

Social - This was listed as a Pro, but it is also a con. The idea of the game being social centric is extremely appealing and it is step in the right direction for Destiny..., However Bungie's poor implementation of their idea of "Social Interaction" if far from what Destiny actually needs. At no time during my 40-50 hours of playing have I experienced any opportunities to meet or actually push me to play with another person except for strikes and PVP. Other than that it's easy to play on your own. The game really has shown to real incentive to playing with others either. Lacking a solid chat system (Which the game could really benefit.) Instead we are stuck standing around in the Tower waving, points, dancing, or sitting around.

Tower/ Tower NPCs - Seriously what is the point of all of the NPCs? Are you trying to make it look lively? Take a hint from Mass Effect and enable you to talk to some of them, give them life instead of mindless wandering around. Why don't the NPC's offer you side quest, missions or anything along those lines? The game would benefit greatly from this as it adds life to the game. Instead you have mindless zombies which literally serve no purpose whatsoever just taking up space.

Repetitive Missions - The variety of missions is severely lacking, during one patrol mission you may get 3 of the same quest, which sometimes they can be a real drag when you have to move across the entire area just to stand in a spot to "Scan" it. These are easily one of the largest disappointments I have encountered with Destiny as it becomes so tedious and so boring that you just want to quit... However you can't quit because you need that Reputation to get gear.

Exploration - Why even bother? Yes the worlds are visually stunning however the main story will pretty much show you the entire area. I have found very few rewards for spending hours exploring so I don't even bother as there don't quite seem to be a lot of Easter eggs or hidden secrets to be found.

Boss Fights - The boss fights are painfully long, While nothing is wrong with a challenge the fact that all of my fireteam members will sit here and unload all of their Ammo and then some into a boss including grenades, and rockets and the boss not even be a quarter of his life down on the highest difficulty is one of the most frustrating things I've seen. On top of that you spend up to 10-15 minutes just jumping around dodging and putting distance between you and the boss just so you can turn around and shoot at him. Occasionally the bosses spawn a bunch of adds during the fights in which you just gun them down... But this rapidly becomes a waste of time and unfortunately none of the boss fights offer any mechanics other than run, jump, shoot.

Enemies- 4 different enemies the cabal, vex, fallen, and hive. I still don't know who the main enemy is.... I still don't know why I'm fighting them, I don't know where they came from..., I literally know almost nothing about the enemies back stories at all....

These are my thoughts, my opinions I just wanted to share them with yall. I like the game and look for ward to the expansions but if things remain like they are now I can't see myself playing it for more than a few months.

I'd give it a 6.5 to 7 out of 10.

Damn. That's funny.

A flip-side of that is that I was once dating this woman that was really into The Sims. She was showing me how she played it. The was a garbage can over flowing in the game with flies around so she had her sim go take out the garbage. I pointed over toward her kitchen where her real garbage can was overflowing and had flies around it and said "If this is so fun why don't you take out your garbage in real life?"

The worlds in the Metroid Prime series are almost devoid of life when compared to Destiny's, yet feel 500 times more alive.

I wasn't expecting the story in game 1 to be equal to the Lord of the Rings plus Simarillion, but what we have is awful.

The World is interesting, and I expected a kind of 'hobbit' equivalent for the story. The big questions would be left until later games and expansions, but we should have an interesting story focused on our own experiences.

It's probably a bad idea to compare any gaming story to literature, but the Destiny story seems vastly inferior to Halo 1.
It just doesn't flow and it is basically a "porn-story" to give a paper thin excuse to shoot some aliens. Releasing the hive from the vault on Earth, opening the Temple of Crota and hacking the Hive database should feel like they are real events that matter (like releasing the Flood or realising what the Halo is).
Instead, they are glossed over as "You pressed the square button, a door opened and some wizards came out. I could tell you what a wizard is, but I won't. Please kill them and raid their homeworld. There's some amazing info in their database, but I won't tell you anything about it. Lets go and find a sword now!"

Definitely because you do not know the map.

You should try Control mode first. It is the easiest mode IMO.

I actually like that there is no pretense in this game about you being the chosen hero that is going to save the universe. Reminds me of older school MMORPGs where you are just another random person in the world.

Of course, those games let you establish a reputation of your own, which Destiny currently does not really support due to the complete lack of social communication functionality.

Definitely because you do not know the map.

You should try Control mode first. It is the easiest mode IMO.

Control mode definitely gives you the most opportunities to feel useful.

I haven't played the PvP in about 8 levels, but I just hit 20 last night, so I'm going to go back in soon representing the FWC!

The problem is that Destiny doesn't have a story, it has a plot outline. To have a story, you need characters, events, scenes, motivations.

Aside from a few utterly terrible lines of dialogue, I think what little story we have there is fine.

Fine. Not great. But fine. The problem is there isn't enough and it's not coherent.

I don't ever expect the story to be wonderful. I just hope they add some memorable characters, make use of al that great voice talent, and make whatever we get from here on in coherent.

(And hopefully get a new editor to weed out certain lines of dialogue that sound like they're from a middle-school story contest.)

Ehh... it has those, it's just not very well done.

I don't think the story is told very well, but I've been able to follow it just fine. I'm now on Mars in order to enter the Black Garden and fuck up the Vex so they stop keeping the Traveler down.

The entire arc of Destiny 1 is to mess up the bad guys who are working to weaken the Traveler and keep it from waking up.

With that said, there are a lot of niggling questions I have that I will search Bungie.net later for answers.

First and foremost is, what the hell has been going on for the last century (centuries?) If all of these bullshit aliens have been in control of every area outside of the last city on earth, then why are you constantly managing to beat them to the bunch when it comes to recovering secrets from lost archives of humanity and such? Seems a bit to convenient.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
Regarding the story, is there anything that even explains at all WHY blowing up the black garden helps the traveler? We are just told "do this and the traveler will start to heal" but it doesn't seem like there is legitimately any more effort or thought put into how and why that is the case.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Destiny's story is bad because it has no good characters. Simple as that. Every character is either a) an exposition box b) needlessly mysterious or c) the Queen's brother, who's a two-dimensional "I don't like you because I don't like you" character. Good stories require good characters.

The general sense I got was that all these other aliens are "Darkness" and "Darkness" somehow hurts the traveler...so by just killing this source of the Vex on Mars, you're removing "Darkness" from the solar system, which helps the traveler.

Or something.

Same could be said for almost any AAA game releases in the last few years.

Nothing unique to Destiny here.

What is more unique is that Destiny is like an MMORPG in that we can expect steady updates. Bungie have stated this is their plan. So all these asides have much more chance to be looked at than your typical AAA release the devs don't have an ongoing plan for.

It's not even the lack of good characters. It's the lack of characters, period. There are zero. It takes more than existing and sending you on an errand to actually be a character in a narrative, and no one in the game even begins to rise above that.

So does the story have any sort of inclusion at all, does it set the game up for a sequel or what? I have no idea what's happening so far and how they could possibly end the game.

It's not even the lack of good characters. It's the lack of characters, period. There are zero. It takes more than existing and sending you on an errand to actually be a character in a narrative, and no one in the game even begins to rises above that.

I've made that argument before and been shouted down, so I'm moderating my language :p

Regarding the story, is there anything that even explains at all WHY blowing up the black garden helps the traveler? We are just told "do this and the traveler will start to heal" but it doesn't seem like there is legitimately any more effort or thought put into how and why that is the case.

Yeah, it's mentioned during a mission on Venus, I believe.

The Vex have something in their Black Garden that is keeping the Traveler weak. You gotta go in their and put a stop to it. I just got to Mars, so I don't know exactly what happens, but that's the idea.

The arc for this game seems to be all about reviving the Traveler or at least finding out and putting a stop to the things that are keeping it from being able to wake up.

They have the base for it. Hopefully they're writing characters and stories for Nathan, Gina, Bill, Lance, Peter, etc...

So much potential there. They have the budget. Hopefully they're listening.

So much hope.

They go for a "the adventure continues" ending, but since you didn't really earn it, the whole thing rings incredibly hollow. They're clearly trying to set you up for more, but frankly, if it's anything like the Moon, Earth, and Mars stories, I'm not interested.

Some hoped for good lines of dialogue, more story, a coherent story, memorable characters and good voiceacting. Day one. Not some day in the future.

Not sure but can you afk pvp matches?
Seems like a shitty way to get gear..

Given how performance has no fucking effect on your reward.
Seen shitty players get legendary engrams and top team players get nothing.

And wtf for giving pvp bounties for a pvp mode that is not available.

Because the Proper Noun adverbs vague metaphorical terms for good and evil.

Had a blast on team deathmatch just now regardless on how dull is the story mode . Its fun blowing up players twice the level you have by just jumping all over them ala Halo .

Feel free to dwell on that if you want.

Day one's come and gone now. I'm looking forward to seeing how Bungie improve upon what they gave us. They have a shot to make this great, and if they do the state of the game at release won't be remembered for long.

Let's just hope they make their shot count.
