The Devil May Cry series celebrates its 10th anniversary this year!

Here’s hoping that we get DMC/DMC3SE remakes. This thread was created to commemorate arguably the best action game series ever and one that has influenced other titles in years following.

Devil May Cry was an accident and a very welcome one. Hideki Kamiya and crew were assigned the next Resident Evil game following the success of the second entry in the series. “Team Little Devil” went to work but found their direction was ending up radically different in reference to the mechanics from the RE titles. A reported “glitch” during development of the RE title where characters were juggling on hit was stated to be the inspiration for DMC’s famous juggle mechanic. The team decided to take on the new direction and create DMC as opposed to what likely would have been the 3rd entry in the RE franchise. The new development cycle resulted in a Playstation 2 release.

The fan forgettable Devil May Cry 2 released not long after without Hideki at the helm; replaced by Hideaki Itsuno. Despite being a financial success, the mundane tone, easier difficulty, and imbalanced combat was turn-off for fans. We choose to ignore it and this OT will do its very best to do the same.

Devil May Cry 3 was Itsuno’s turn-around success following DMC2. The prequel brought back a more youthful Dante will all his smart-alecky one-liners. The difficulty went from the mentioned easier DMC2 to a level of brutality. The difficulty settings were such an issue that different versions received different assignments based on region. The combat engine was re-balanced and the multiple-style system was put in place. The weapon switching system was enhanced and the gameplay depth is unparalleled even today. Due to the game’s success a special edition was released shortly after. The main addition was the ability to play as Dante’s brother, Vergil.

Devil May Cry 4 was Itsuno’s 3rd DMC game, this time designated for next-generation systems. Instead of the game starring the well receiving Dante, a new main character named Nero was introduced. Fan reactions were mixed despite Dante also being playable for around half the storyline. Nero’s gameplay slowed down the frantic fighting game canceling system of DMC3 and changed the feel to a more grappling/free-flow system. The combat was less about frantic inputs and more focused on positioning/buffering. Dante as stated was playable for half the game but it was backtracking. This feature was labeled lazy and tacked-on by fans. Dante actually received more options in combat but the repetitiveness was unwelcome.

<SPOILERS IN BUNDLES>

Devil May Cry 1 – “A New *ODD* Oedipus Complex is Born”
tRKy3.png

You are Dante. You kick ass with swords and guns.

…I guess there is more.

Yea so, Dante is in his office hanging out. In true DMC fashion a lunatic woman barges in and ruthlessly tries to put him on the 10’o clock news. Dante responds by kicking ass and not giving a damn. It is shockingly revealed that it was a test and Dante was seriously impressive to boot. Trish (the lunatic woman), tells Dante totally at random that Mundus is back (huh?). Mundus is the king of the demon world and killed Dante’s demon pops. So Dante gets semi-serious face and Trish pulls a vanishing act.

Dante then goes to a castle since this was probably the setting for the next RE game and they did not want to lose the assets that’s where Mudus hangs. Dante runs into the muppet crew and starts juggling them like hacky sacks, gun style. Dante finds some Zelda type sword and runs into a demon named Nelo Angelo. Nelo is his brother Vergil in a new form; whatever, family stuff, etc… They each had parts of an amulet and used to be super friends. So after the fight the amulet joins and Dante gets his pop’s Sparda sword, being so awesome it was brilliantly named after the user. The amulet was their mother’s or something.

Dante then needs to find Trish since he fell in love with her when she tried to crash his business and murder him. So he finds her, sweet. Oh wait; she was a creation of Mundus and looks like his mom! Dante then fights Mundus with his mean face on. Trish gets the hots for Dante since I guess they were together for another 10 minutes so she takes massive damage to spare Dante (like he wouldn’t have survived that…).

Dante kills Mundus and Trish is dead. But Dante uses black magic by dumping inventory items on her corpse, so she eventually revives. The girl cries and Dante says “devils never cry” to consolidate the game title choice. He then partners up with her as a dynamic duo where you hope they aren’t hooking up. The shop is called “Devil Never Cry” which is a much worse name then the former.

Devil May Cry 2 – “Devils Cry at this Game”
tC4IK.png

You are Dante. You don’t kick ass with swords and guns.

You meet a new chick named Lucia and kill a businessman.

Devil May Cry 3 – “So Very Stylish”
6zjwh.png

You are Dante. You once again kick ass with swords and guns.

So a dude named Arkham pulls a psycho Trish stunt and attacks Dante at his place of styleness business. Cue awesome over the top action. This was all pointless though since he was just delivering an invitation to a dance party from Dante’s bro Vergil and this time around there was no need to do a test. Dante steps outside and Vergil rises atop some crazy tower. Was the invitation to go outside?...WTF

Dante is now tasked to climb that sucker cause he wants to get close to his bro again. So he starts kicking ass while moving towards the end-zone. After killing the Greek myth Cerberus a girl on a motorcycle says “have at you!” That’s Lady, who suffers from the anime condition called ridiculous heterochromia. Iris-girl is Arkham’s daughter. She reveals that Vergil wanted to do more then host a dance party. So this is again about the b-day amulet from his mom which is still a strange thing to give your adolescent sons…

Dante ditches Iris-girl and meets up with a clown. This idiot’s name is Jester and he is Arkham in Agent 47 disguise. He puts you through the first of his many stupid battles. Dante then still wants to play king of the mountain and tops the tower. The Dance party is cancelled since the DJ didn’t show up (though there is a ton of rock music playing in the background…) and the bros must fight. The two supporting characters show up and say we must push the narrative forward. So Arkham reveals he is a total douche and is using everybody. The now revealed circus clown is going after the sword that Link didn’t get a chance to hold to the sky.

Dante loses king of the mountain and is thrown downwards to a sweet action cut-scene. He gets swallowed up by some stupid eel thing but eventually busts you like “wham, I’m out.” So he climbs the tower again cause the douche clown needs to be torn up. He fights Vergil again during the climb or whatever; forget why. He also fights Iris-girl cause she is pissed about her character design and she gives him a high explosive round, crowd control, ass-kicking bazooka… Moving on, Dante takes a siesta to the Demon world and finds the clown. He DT’s and the clown turns into a blob. The blob is annoying so Vergil crashes in and the bros rolls that fool like play-doh. He then is all weak and crap so miss crazy eyes takes him out.

Dante and Vergil then fight over their birthday gift cause the damn kids can’t share. Dante wins and tells Vergil not to touch his shit. But Vergil still gets half the amulet and decides for some reason to get absorbed by the demon world. Lady now is revealed to be Dante’s first hot chick who hangs around and Dante is all crying about his bro. She says the awesome “devil may cry” line which is the only thing she has done right in her life. The shop is now called that awesome name ready to be changed to the crappier name years after.

Devil May Cry 4 – You Can’t Spell “Win” without “Whine”
XQy9B.png

You are not Dante. You still kick ass with swords and guns. But your arm also glows.

Cue Nero, the kid who doesn’t cry at the end but the entire time (watch the cut-scenes, bleh). Nero has some screwed up demon arm and can use some crazy phantom grab stuff. So yea, church is going on and Nero is late. So he starts killing things in the streets because I guess you have to kill demons as penance in this twisted world. He arrives and throws his headphones on cause that crap be boring.

Dante says church is “NO LONGER IN SERVICE” (he doesn’t actually say that) and crashes in from the ceiling spouting nonsense about organized religion (I wish he said that). Dante murders some priest looking guy named Sanctus. But Dante doesn’t pull that stuff so it actually wasn’t a murder. Santus is the bad guy this time and pops a phoenix down. Nero goes all stupid and attacks the god-tier Dante. Dante plays around with him and then jets.

Nero is asked to catch Dante which is an idea about as useless as the backtracking in this game. Credo should also be mentioned as he issued the order, is Nero’s girl’s brother, and he is also a bad guy. Nero then eventually fights a bunch of stuff and arrives at a castle…a castle…..castle…….again. Nero then fights a bunch of stupid side-character enemies and gets Vergil’s kick ass sword, the Yamato. Nero eventually fights Dante, yielding yet another DMC test, and god-tier Dante wins (but of course!).

Nero’s girl Kyrie is now captured by Sanctus because for some reason she didn’t just stay home... Nero then fights Sanctus, is revealed to have the blood of Sparda, and is removed to allow players to use Dante as they have so desired.

*Cue mindless backtracking with Dante for hours…*

*Cue Intermission*

*Cue endless sighs from the player-base*

Dante now is fighting Agnus, who I didn’t mention because he sucks. He dies and then we move onto the savior who I also didn’t mention, because it is dumb. Dante and Nero use their awesome swords to kill everything. Nero goes with his girl and retires from video games. Then the best cut-scene in the game occurs. Dante and his female crew have a quick convo which you wish was the opening scene to DMC4. No such luck.

I figured out how to get the triggers working. Gunbo's right about using a key mapper.

Guardian, you want this in your ini:
[Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows)]
START = 7
SELECT = 6
CIRCLE = 1
TRIANGLE = 3
SQUARE = 2
CROSS = 0
L1 = 11
R1 = 12
L2 = 4
R2 = 5
L3 = 8
R3 = 9
L<->R = 1

I swapped L1/R1's functions with L2/R2's. That way you get the weapon/gun changes on the bumpers. You can then presumably use any program like Joy2Key or Xpadder to take spacebar and and "N"(which are lock on and devil trigger on the keyboard) and map them to the triggers. I'm personally using ControlMK and the triggers in that program are represented as "Z-Axis -"(right trigger) and "Z-Axis +"(left trigger)
Replace [Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows)] with your controller name in windows if you have trouble.

Damage
Taking damage is an obvious no-no in any game. However, it is a deadly idea in DMC titles. With the later titles, taking damage will hurt not only your style points but also your ranking.

The best ways to avoid damage is to KEEP MOVING! If you are static, then you can get hit. If you are going to use a short footed combo which keeps you in the same area for a prolonged period, make sure you can cancel your attacks. Jump canceling is critical for quick escapes. Keeping aerial is also great to avoid damage unless you are fighting other aerial enemies

Be Original
Don't spam the same combos over and over in DMC titles. In the style games, you will lose massive styles points for repeating combos. The best way to not get locked into short patterns is to try to mix up your weapons. By forcing yourself to use aerial melee attacks on one weapon and then flowing into your other gear, you will build style points quickly. Then you can advance to mix-ups per weapon and finally user combos.

Never Gonna Stop Me
Be fast and don't be merciful. DMC styling is about fast, frantic action. Use moves like the stinger to close distance immediately. Don't walk, pause, or even take a breath. Instead of jump canceling to an open area, go aerial. Instead of dodging out, use your AoE to stun. There are never reasons in DMC to perform a defensive action without using offense (royal guard excluded). Keep to the skies, maintain juggles, stuns, and when you land, unleash hell with your links.

Area of Effect (AoE) Styling
Hit everything you can and that includes mobs of enemies. The Kalina Ann is a perfect example of a quick AoE attack as it damages close mobs. You also have strong AoE with melee attacks such as the rebellion moves in swordmaster. Nevan especially has massive AoE attacks though they lose effectiveness on Dante Must Die difficulty. Basically, if you can attack multiple enemies at once, do not hesitate. The transformation flux (TFLUX) is the best AoE in the game. It has the strength of a holy water and can be built by burning your Devil Trigger meter.

Get Technical
Any quick frame moves will build style. These "just" moves are basically the ones that would get your blood flowing. Just parries on royal guard is a perfect example. You can also do just dodging, jump cancels, etc...

Be a Jerk
Taunting is an integral component in DMC. If you taunt a group of enemies, you will build style meter fast. You should also get into the habit of taunting right after kills. It will give you a sweet boost. However, make sure you don't wait too long or the window closes. In SP mode on DMD difficulty, it is a necessity to taunt. You use your taunts to build meter to maintain Devil Trigger bar. You can then use your bar to regen.

Be Prudent when Unleashing the Demon
DMC1 has a great Devil Trigger mode. It is powerful and is basically like an adrenaline shot to Dante. When you build it, use it where the timing is right.

In later titles, using DT is not as simple as right click -> use. You have to manage your meter and use it in the proper ways. The best example is the TFLUX. I will argue that the DT mode is only really useful for health regen in SP. The TFLUX though is unbelievably powerful and should be used as much as possible. The later titles also provide a lot of unique moves and abilities when in DT mode. A lot of these moves are useful for secret missions.

It seems really obvious now that it's gonna be the HD Remaster of either DMC1 or the first three games.

Gameplay in DMC is as deep as Capcom’s best fighting games and about as polished as their best action titles. The battle system goes through many revisions. However, the main battle system to cite is Devil May Cry 3. The reasoning is that DMC1 and the sparingly mentioned DMC2 are easily referenced by removing content. All of the mechanics just dilute backwards. Devil May Cry 4 changed the combat heavily in tone so I will discuss it. However, the first two titles will get little mention.

I will now be discussing combat mechanics. Gameplay wise there is not much to mention outside combat mechanics except maybe the platforming.

5iMgo.png

Weapons
Dante always has weapons that fit specific play styles. The Rebellion is typically the standard melee, balanced weapon. It has some special range attacks but is great for its versatility. In the original DMC, this is basically your default combat. Dante also has weapons built for up-close speed, elementals, projectiles, and charge. It is your job to create synergy between your choices.

Your firearms are used mainly for range, crowd-clearing, and stun control. They are easier to choose between then the melee weapons as they are geared towards preference.

Styles
Styles make the combat work. There are ways to work different weapon combinations into what seems like a poor fit. But with styles, you either build your combat around it or fail. Choosing a style depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are looking to beat the game, then there are styles that favor that. If you want to "style" on an additional play-through, you might look at some more unique styles. I will address the DMC3 styles.

-Gunslinger-
The gunslinger style is my favorite in all DMC games. This style matches appropriately with projectile weapons that receive modifications. The Artemis weapon with multi-lock is the best gunslinger weapon. This style is also great for high difficulty play. Gunslinger has massive frame advantage from buffering and weapon canceling. I show this style in my videos below.

-Swordmaster-
A great style that is especially useful for styling videos. The swordmaster style is actually integral for certain areas of the games. For example, some bosses are especially vulnerable to zero-gravity slash combos. The problem with swordmaster is the lag on attacks. On higher levels, you can get slashed up quite a bit if you don't keep your frames moving. Though, I would tell you on certain levels in DMC3 for example to choose it.

-Trickster-
Trickster is another utility style like swordmaster. It can be very useful in certain areas such as bosses who have very fast offense. However, overall it is still more of a styling choice. There is way to much lag on enemy attacks where teleporting can put you in a world of hurt. However, if you abuse certain functionality of the trickster style you can dominate high difficulty play. Unfortunately, it feels cheap and becomes boring.

-Royal Guard-
The Beowulf style? Seriously, just use it with Beowulf and don't even think about it. This is more of a specialty style for multiple play-throughs. It asks for constant perfect frame inputs and really slows down the DMC pace. It actually can be useful against some enemies in DMC3 but you can manage otherwise.

-Quicksilver- | -Doppelganger-
These are fun styles but I don't use them for higher level combat. They are too gimmicky between slowing down time and using shadow attacks. They can create some cool high hit combo videos but I go for practicality with my play. The top three styles are more functional in this regard.

-Darkslayer (Vergil)-
Similar to trickster and just gives Vergil some better movement. Nothing special.

Vergil
I'll drop a few words on these guys. Vergil is over-powered and not as fun as Dante IMO. I don't use him much but I know how we works. he is a movement based shielding type. But he is built static so if you want to main Vergil, dig into the following FAQ.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/931852-devil-may-cry-3-special-edition/faqs/41350

Techs
So I really quickly covered just some overview of styles and weapons. The reason I didn't dig further because your gameplay revolves around your own style. This is where your techs come in. If you play for speed, movement, firepower, isolating combos, AoE tactics, etc... that's where your weapons/styles come in. So focusing too much on providing a dictionary is fruitless.

-Weapon Canceling- - Oh how I love weapon canceling.

Weapon canceling involves using the trigger buttons to cancel frames in DMC. For example, the Kalina Ann has a ridiculous cool down. On Dante Must Die difficulty, you are in for a world of hurt if you don't maintain frame advantage. By firing the large crowd control weapon and switching quickly to your off-hand, you cancel the cool-down frames.

My best cancels involve the shotgun, gunslinger, point blank shot. I illustrate this a lot in my video. By quickly switching between your weapons, you can start some ridiculous cancel chains. Using Artemis, you can buffer directly after cancels. It doesn't take long for a multi-shot to build.

You can also cancel melee frames with melee switches. Slower weapons like beowulf can have some nasty cool-downs. Switch to your hopefully correctly chosen speed weapon and cancel those nasty frames out.

-Crowd Control-

There are a lot of mobs in DMC and you have to control them. Crowd control involves AoE attacks to cause mob stun. The Kalina Ann can cause a lot of damage and keep the crowds in check. The Nevan, which is basically the best weapon in both titles, is fantastic for crown control. Unfortunately, on higher difficulties where the enemies can devil trigger the hit stun is canceled on many of Nevan's attacks.

Not many people realize that some of the less known crown control weapons have AoE ability. Rebellion even has attacks that can attack behind Dante's head. I believe I show this in one of the videos where I know the sword will hit the enemy behind me, so I don't dodge. Basically, melee weapons that have horizontal attacks can reach beyond the front-focused hit-box.

-Juggles-

DMC is about juggles since it is constant hit stun. Once you get a launch, you keep it. I illustrate a great example in the later dated video. I use artemis to provide damage and I luckily get a launch. I then re-buffer my charge, execute on air, and I land before the enemy. Why do I land first when I went up late? That's because of the juggling of the projectiles. When I land first I use a sphere attack to main the juggle. Then you have the ability to re-launch and maybe charge something like Nevan or Beowulf.

However, don't think of juggles as DMC1 style Ebony & Ivory attacks only. The higher level juggle have to be fast and you should be able to cancel at all times. An E&I standard DMC1 juggle will put you in a vulnerable state for off-camera charge attacks. You want your juggle chains to allow free-form movement or you will get killed.

-Hit-Stun-

Hit-stun is HUGE on high difficulty play. Hit-stun is the idea of keeping enemies in stun which means they are not blocking and taking damage. The idea is to be relentless with your attacks. Do not give enemies changes to break the stun with blocks or teleports. If you break their guard, you better kill them on a string. This is where your firearms are huge! Ebony and Ivory can even be spammed to continue hit stun. This means you can multi-task while keeping stun on problematic enemies.

I use artemis in the videos to maintain stun. By buffering my charges I keep constant stun on the enemies resulting in openings for melee.

-Buffering-

I'm going to combine Nero's exceed system in this. Nero uses a charge system on his sword to maintain his exceed levels. You can either hold to charge (don't) or use perfect frames to insta-charge (do that). You are technically sort of buffering the levels with your perfect frames. I am stretching a bit but that is the basics.

Dante can buffer a ton. I artemis buffer with constant charge rebuilds after weapon canceling in the videos. However, I also buffer in DMC4 with Nero on his charge shot. You have to re-map your controls basically to accommodate this. It takes a lot of patience and practice to implement correctly. Dante can also buffer his charges on melee weapons for charge attacks. The swordmaster/gunsligner styles sort of split the work here with choices.

-Transformation Flux (TFLUX)-

Watch the videos to see TFLUX in action. TFLUX involves using your DT gauge to charge what is basically an AoE bomb. I NEVER use DT outside TFLUX unless I need health regain. TFULX is ridiculously powerful and should be used when you are on top of your enemies. It is difficult to control though. For example, with my artemis buffering in the video I am also holding down the DT button for TFLUX at the same time. That means I have to claw the buttons holding down L1/L2, which I remapped, to maintain both charge systems. The necessity for L2 (weapon switch) canceling into shotgun makes the concept very difficult.

More techs to come! Once I post videos I will commentate on the mechanics. There are way to many to cover without demonstration.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Any more reservations?

Yeah, this thread is fucking amazing. We don't talk about THAT game in here, do we?

I mean, I do love Devil May Cry and all, but, uh, isn't the 10th anniversary like two months away?
It's all about playing the game BEFORE the anniversary! Fire up those great action titles and pray for the remakes.

Wait, the thread starter is a Junior Member.

How can this be?

Had great times with the first game but didn't enjoy the series after that.

It made me cry.

God damn, I think I played 200 hours of DMC2... it introduced me to Bloody Palace.

There was a time when all I played was DMC and the MGS2 demo, and what a time that was.

In the same way Gears was pretty much the start of real 'next-gen' for me personally, last time around it was DMC. I think it's been hugely outclassed since, but it's still a very important game to me. So good.

*sigh* I miss Dante already.

I posted this a little while ago, but I'm trying to S-rank the Bloody Palace in DMC4 (last achievement I need). Anyone have any tips in particular?

*Edited for clarification

Who are we talking about?

Played the first DmC, I enjoyed it enough but never felt like playing another one. (Kind of like the God of War series.)

Also I hate games which give me shitty letter grades after each level, which I feel like DmC was the first to do to me.

Also great PA:

Are you the Ulillillia of DMC2?
Can't blame me bro, I was very young and it took me like 3 months to afford DMC2. I had to play it for at least another 3 months!

Honestly? I like DMC4 more than DMC3.

The enemies in 3 are kinda lame, between the slow, mindlessly easy statues and the eight million scythe-wielding or arrow-arching punching bags. The difficulty levels feel lazy compared to other games in the genre, with HP and damage tweaks instead of enemy replacements, making SE's Normal/USA DMC3's Easy too easy and leaving SE's Hard/USA DMC3's Normal with boss battles that are boring endurance tests. Seems to be a lot of potential for goofy combos, but that's not what I'm interested in.

The biggest issues in 4, Nero and the backtracking, just don't bother me enough. Nero was pretty fun to use, whiner or not, and the backtracking wasn't a big issue considering how different the stages played the second time through.

The original is still my favorite, though. Best difficulty curve, great enemy behavior, good and varied difficulty levels.

4 does have better fodder enemies than 3, and Nero isn't an issue at all (his combat's awesome!), but the level design and the boss design in 3 is so, so much better than in 4.

Besides, in both games you can dish out so much damage so fast that no boss is truly an endurance test.

yo I played the shit out of DMC2 too, blew a fuck-ton of money on that game - damn straight I'm gonna play it! Even managed to convince myself the fight with The Despair Embodied was fun for a while.

Hahahaha, WOW! I just realized I had read your guide all along back in the days! Wow man, just wow. +1
Back in the day I discovered a lot of techs in the game and told them to other DMC vets and they made videos of them. I then decided to compile them all but it got so big and someone suggested I just make a FAQ out of it and I did.

I was one of the first persons to discover how to actually combo Devil Trigger enemies in DMD mode and made a whole system on them for veterans to use in their videos. This took months to discover and I was honestly shocked it took so long for people to figure out.

Amazing!

Check out the vids and my comments...we should talk. I'd be interested in your gameplay style.
Dude I am RETIRED DMC3 vet now. I don't even have a PS2 anymore or DMC3SE.

We can talk and I can tell you about my style but that's all you will get out of me. :D

Beautiful.

I may redownload DMC4 from Games on demand because of this thread.

the campaign kinda sucks but the bloody palace in 4 might be one of my favorite things in the entire series.

So, is there any way to make the PC version of DMC3 actually playable nowadays? I figured that maybe people made a patch by now that would actually make it function correctly with a gamepad.

Devil May Cry 3 is best Devil May Cry.

I was so happy when - after 200+ hours of gameplay - I made number 1 DMC4 player outside of Japan on Son of Sparda difficulty mode. I bossed that game something fierce. Still annoyed there was no Trophies and had to settle for 1000/1000 in-game achievement score. That's the end of my trumpet-tooting.

Probably my favorite franchise, easily.
