Dirt Rally |OT| Don’t Cut, Be Brave

How punishing is it? Is it the type of game where you have to be perfect and talented, or you'll have to keep retrying?

I'm a fan of the other four DiRT games, but I'm by no means great at them.

From my experience, you have to put in hours to be decent.

It's not impossible, just has steep learning curve. Still, other DiRT games are piece of cake compared to this.

I don't think so. In the last survey they mentioned dakar, ice racing, and a bunch of other types of off-road, but there was no truck.
Aw damn, those hill climbs with semis were my favorite :p

Still going to get it when it release on PS4, but a little disappointed.

One big thing is that there's no rewind like the other DiRT games, so big mistakes tend to hurt you worse.

Thanks everyone : ) Here's a few more. I really wish CM would add a freecam screenshot mode and control over replay cameras.

I hope this game gets VR, will be my first vr game.

It has VR : ) I love playing it with the rift. The sense of speed is incredible and it is much easier overall. Check out this guys comments reddit on playing with the rift:

Check out some videos too:

The second video gives you a better idea of how much you can actually see in the rift.

Eurogamer review:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-12-14-dirt-rally-review

The Colin McRae series at its prime was always excellent at ushering players into that zone, but Dirt Rally goes further still. It helps that Codemasters have perhaps looked to another revered off-road game bearing the name of a world champion, Richard Burns Rally. With its sim-like credentials, and a propensity to bite back, Dirt Rally certainly seems closer to Warthog's 2004 game than anything else in the Codemasters stable. Such attitude is backed up by a handling model that runs satisfyingly deep.

A passion for the sport shines through Dirt Rally's course selection, an assortment of the very best of off-road racing from the dank Welsh countryside and classic stages such as Sweet Lamb to the more glamorous grey of Monte Carlo and the Col de Turini. There are thrills elsewhere, too, from the precarious, vertiginous blasts of Greece to the impossibly dangerous forest trials of Finland, where Dirt Rally's greatest challenges lie. It's there, in the pure speed and the survival horror that comes through seeing the rev needle bounce off the limiter in top gear as pine trees fly past, that Codemasters' new brand of driving is at its very best.

After the excesses that began to weigh down some of Codemasters' driving games, the purity and laser focus found here is more than welcome. The paring back, however, has arguably gone too far in some cases, and there's a feeling that this was pulled out of Early Access a little prematurely. The front-end menu is a thin clutter, refusing to welcome newcomers to what's undoubtedly an intimidating game - there are a handful of assists, tucked away in a pause menu, but there's nothing by way of a tutorial to give a gentle introduction to what's on offer.

It can be frustratingly punitive, though, and Dirt Rally's career mode limits you to cars you've purchased - and asks you to grind a little too much to acquire a half-decent garage. Money can be earned elsewhere, including in faddish but fun daily and monthly events with decent payouts, but Dirt Rally still feels overly restrictive, and displays little imagination when it comes to providing a neat, compelling thread through the disciplines, courses and cars it's compiled. You get the sense such issues will be ironed out by the time of Dirt Rally's console debut next April, but they're still very much present in a PC version that's happy to call itself the finished article.

Considering what thrills Dirt Rally offers, though, it's easy to overlook its shortcomings. Codemasters has been long overdue a return to the form that made its name, when it regularly churned out genre classics such as Colin McRae Rally, TOCA and Grid. Dirt Rally does more than restore some glory to a name that's become slightly tarnished in recent years; in its passionate portrayal of rally, delivered with brutality and beauty, Codemasters has delivered what's quite simply its finest driving game to date.

Speaking of the career mode, can someone explain to me how it works?

I've been driving the Fulvia and got promoted to a new league, however when I start a new championship I can pick another car. Does that mean if I bought a new car in a different class I would start in the higher tier league, or would I go the bottom one again?

You would start in a higher difficulty championship. Only way to go down in championship tiers is to be in last top 3 / abandon championships.

So yes, choose a faster car. I recommend the 70's Escort :p

Former is correct.

I don't think car has anything to do with your career, except you can only use cars you've bought.

Basically if you finish in the top three at the end of championship, you will get promoted. If you finish in the bottom three, you'll get relegated. Finish in the middle of those two, you stay in the same difficulty/league.

That's pretty much it.

Thanks all.

That's slightly annoying, I was planning to try and win the top league in the Fulvia, then start again in the next class up and so on.

Rather than have to abandon about 50 events to get relegated to the bottom, is there a way to reset your progress do you know?

You can't reset afaik. Just have to abandon championship right after starting one. You can abandon championship when looking at championship standings (access before entering championship)

I think I found a bug in this game.

So, I have this game since it came out on Early Access, and this is the first time I see something like this. There was a thread here on Reddit asking what was the best RX car, and I was using the DS3 since the RX stuff came out. I see some people here mentioning that the DS3 and the Polo are the hardest ones to drive (and I agree that the DS3 is very bitchy), so I decided to try some more "tame" cars with custom events. The Mini, the 208 and the Fiesta, and I noticed that when I chose the Fiesta (tried with Hell and Lyden Hill), the race simply doesn't load. It stays on loading like forever. I have to press Alt+F4 to quit the game. Didn't have that problem with the Mini and the 208 when I tried them. But with the Fiesta, I had it three times. Anyone with the same problem?

EDIT: Shit, I guess today is the day. I was in a RX race in Sweden in a 208, fighting for a position, when I miscalculated the angle of that jump on the side of the joker track, and then I landed in the middle of the guard rail. Suddenly the game freezed and stopped working. I had to CTRL+ALT+DEL to close the process, since not even Alt+F was working.

Weird, this is the first time I'm dealing with bugs with this game, and I have it since the release on EA.

OK, so why didn't anyone tell me you can't retry the GAF league event! :D

Hit a bridge on the first stage and could have carried on, but thought, 'might as well have another go, do it right'. So I retire and then it won't let me back into the event... Coming from Gran Turismo, I didn't even consider that you couldn't try to improve your time.

So that 15 minutes retirement time has crippled me for the rest of the season. Not that I would have been a contender anyway, but damn.
Love how harsh this game is :)

55 hours spent in the game so far since it hit early access (which is nothing compared to most people, I know) and I still can't even come close to getting first place in the master's championship. It's humbling.

Does anyone here uses the Ford Fiesta Rallycross normally? I can't use it here. It stays on infinite loading.

I usually use the Subaru but I just popped into a custom Rallycross event with the Fiesta and it worked fine. Maybe try doing the file check on Steam?

Did that. No dice. I guess I just threw 350.000 in game credits on the trash can. =/

Oh, well, I guess I'll have to restrain myself from using the Fiesta then. Weird that it works fine with the other cars, and the Fiesta loads fine for the AIs, but not for me. Sad that it looks so nice...

Could someone shittier than me please knock me up from the bottom of the leaderboard, thanks.

I'll be doing my bit to help you today; almost a certainty to take over the illustrious bottom spot.

Haven't been playing long, and eased myself in with some of the assists enabled - going to try driving without them for the league stuff, so hilarity (and some very slow times) should ensue.

i need this game.
This so much. Even more so given the fact Polyphony Digital is unaware of the E30 M3 existing and it's one of my favorite cars. Favorite cars + rally = head_explode.gif! I'm coming for you Patrick Snijers!

Wow!
